Some millers in Kitwe have hiked the price of a 25 kilograms bag of breakfast to KR60 despite recent Government directive to reduce the prices which were attributed to shortage of the commodity.

Olympic milling company in Ndeke Township has pegged a 25 kilogram bag of breakfast mealie meal at KR58 much to the displeasure of residents.

A Ndeke resident, Moses Makumba, who stormed the Times Kitwe offices yesterday protested the high price of the commodity.

Mr Makumba complained that it was not fair that the price of mealie meal was increased when there was a directive from the Head of State that the commodity should be sold at KR50.

Mpongwe Milling Company in Kawama Township was selling the same commodity at KR55.

Sales persons at both outlets declined to be identified attributed the increase in the price of mealie meal to transport costs.

However, the prices at Olympic Milling and Antelope outlets in the town centre were normal.

Olympic, Antelope and National Milling firms in the town centre are selling the 25 kilograms of breakfast at K50 and by yesterday the three outlets had run out of the stock.

The recent shortage of mealie meal in November last year forced some traders in Kitwe to sell a 25 kilogram of breakfast mealie meal about K75,000 before Government intervened.

The first mistake Sata made was to fire all permanent secretaries and directors from the MMD government, they were the people behind the stable and low prices of mealie meal… the the bumper harvest too. Next year will even be worse, can you image up-to now farmers have not yet received fertilizers. Next year 25kg of mealie meal will be selling for more than KR 100.
