The opposition UPND has vowed to go ahead and expel its Itezhi Tezhi MP Greyford Monde after he was appointed as Deputy Minister of Agriculture.
UPND Deputy Spokesman Edwin Lifwekelo said in an interview that the party has since drafted Mr. Monde’s expulsion letter.
“For us, it is clear that Monde has been double dealing. He has officially forfeited his seat and that marks the end of his political career,” Mr. Lifwekelo said.
He said the UPND has always maintained that none of its MP’s shall serve in the PF administration.
“How can we work with people that are busy mutilating our democracy and disregarding the rule of law? For us, there are no two ways about it. Once our MP accepts to work in the PF administration, then they relinquish their seat. It is as simple as that.”
Mr. Lifwekelo said President Sata has been working so hard to poach MP’s from the UPND in an effort to weaken the opposition.
President Michael Sata has appointed Itezhi Tezhi UPND MP Greyford Monde as Deputy Minister in the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock with immediate effect.
When contacted for a comment, Mr Monde said he has accepted his appointment by President Sata to serve in the PF government as deputy minister of agriculture.
He has also said that he will wait for whatever action his party will take against him for accepting the appointment.
In his letter of appointment to Mr. Monde, President Sata said he is confident that Mr. Monde will perform to his expectations and that of the Zambian people.
Mr. Monde becomes the first UPND MP to be appointed to serve in Mr. Sata’s PF administration.

In any case, what is this Monde going to contribute to the nation as deputy minister other than just getting personal benefits. As deputy minister, you don’t sit in cabinet to discuss policy issues. @Levy’s Junction; do not mislead people. A coalition government like the one obtaining in the UK is different from a single party ruling. In a coalition government, you do expect appointments from parties of the coalition govt. It is unheard of for a conservative government appointing someone from the Labour party to the cabinet for the Republican to appoint someone from the Democrats. NGO’s may be another issue not ministerial positions in peace times. We wait to her your citation.
Even a coalition govt, anywhere in the world, does not include so many from the minority partners. Where does all this end? Soon, you are going to have a government in which members of the opposition parties are the majority. In this case, the consequences were obvious. It is a clear case of an induced by-election. Whether you are PF, MMD or UPND, you have to see that these bye-elections are a waste of national resources that could be used elsewhere to alleviate poverty. Moreover, why do we not see this alleged desire for bipartisanship in other appointments such as foreign service or top management positions in industry and government.
UPND, UPND…this is backward thinking. If UPND MPs are appointed to ministerial positions and they work so hard to push UPND “better” policies in both cabinet and parliament, then we can see what their government will be like. If they can work with PF and still be loyal to their political party then we can see the fabric with which they are made. What is the worst that can happen? Sata sees their hard work and realises that they are selling UPND. He fires them all and they remain ordinary UPND MPs as before. Keep your frieds close and your enemies closer. That way you will know how to defeat your opponents.

@ Levy`s Junction you are wrong! In the American Situation Members of the cabinet come from outside Congress and the Senate. Therefore those appointed do not cause any imbalance in those two houses. In the British system, they form a hang Government in which two or more parties agree to form Government. The Cabinet members in this case are proposed by the party they serve. They also vote with their parties on any issue in parliament. In our case the MPs are poached and are not allowed to vote with their parties. This creates an imbalance in Parliament. The motives are also very different with ours purely there to have more numbers on the Government side thereby indirectly curtailing debate and opposition in parliament. Please read widely before you comment on important issues.

That is not mere history/past glory as u put it @zambia4life… That is a trend that has developed over time, and using that trend one can easily tell that upnd is goin nowhere, unless something drastic happens to effect a major change in the trend.. but the chances of that change happening are next to zero, so all in all upnd are deluded if they think they are winning 2016.
Like well articulated above, the American system appoints cabinet from outside congress. The reason is to target specialists in certain areas. In cases where they ve strong political affiliations, they don’t necessarily renounce them but will work in cabinet independent of these affiliations. If they do otherwise, American law is very swift on perjury. During the last elections Hillary Clinton was repeatedly asked to comment on the elections and her answer was my office is apolitical, I serve Americans across the party spectrum and yet we know she was a democrat. (Compare this to Mrs Masebo) John Kerry is the new secretary of state, he’s had to resign his senate seat albeit he belongs to the ruling democrats in order to be a apolitical. So cabinet is not tainted with political rhetoric…

Sata’s strategy here is to pass on the blame on to UPND for an “unnecessary by election”. This is an apparent response to the catholic pastoral letter that strongly queried unnecessary expensive by elections. Its also as if to say ” Pope Benedict XVI has also caused a very expensive by election in the papacy, why do u question me?” He is throwing the gauntlet back at the Zambian Catholic Bishops. This man Monde has facked up his political career by breaking the GOLDEN RULE of UPND for accapting an appointment from PF govt. The status quo of UPND is clear. Another by election coming and I wonder if Mr. Monde is going to retain his seat like Stephen Masumba did manage in Mufumbwe.
It is wrong for Mr. Sata to continue doing this for his selfish motives instead of developing the nation. Is there need surely to have 3 deputy ministers in one ministry just because of uterior motives? You who are supporting these wrongs by your president are not helpful to our country because you are narrow minded. Be rational and realize that this is not about about HH or UPND but about Zambia. One mcs and pf , through their selfishness, are single handedly dividing and destroying the once united nation.

Just for argument’s sake, why doesn’t the UPND go the whole ten yards and call on ALL their followers in the country; and not just MPS, to not work for the PF administration? I mean, including ALL the civil servants; those in parastatal and quasi-government and other public institutions like schools, hospitals, etc, etc? Why do their civil servant members accept to work for the PF government? Why are they different from their MPs? Only then will they begin to make sense. Otherwise they will continue to look more and more tribal and ridiculous even to their dwindling supporters by opposing every appointment the head of state makes.
Only us from the sata academy can understand these politics,from the time of was formed we have been members not those bamuselela kwakaba.
I dont understand why UPND does not want its members of parliament to work with the ruling party for development. The people should have a voice to say No and not the party. MPs are voted in by the people. And can serve in any government. Go for it Mr Monde. In the USA Obama has appointed a Repulican as minister of defence. But that appointment has to be ratified by the senate or praliament. Such is life HH let your MPs enjoy their rights, freedoms.
Would one be wrong to conclude that once in power, UPND will not appoint any one from the opposition to serve in their government?
UPND, UPND…this is backward thinking. If UPND MPs are appointed to ministerial positions and they work so hard to push UPND “better” policies in both cabinet and parliament, then we can see what their government will be like. If they can work with PF and still be loyal to their political party then we can see the fabric with which they are made. What is the worst that can happen? Sata sees their hard work and realises that they are selling UPND. He fires them all and they remain ordinary UPND MPs as before. Keep your frieds close and your enemies closer. That way you will know how to defeat your opponents.
HH the Zambian Law is only good when it is in your favour. The Zambian Constitution allows the President to appoint any Member of Parliament to a Ministerial position to serve the Zambian people. Your heart is so full of hatred for PF that you cannot even admit when the Law has been complied with! You my dear will never rule Zambia with is kind of mentality. You were assured of the Presidency on a Gold Platter when you were in pact with PF but you threw it away because you had no patience to wait for your turn. Now you are so bitter, and this bitterness is eating you up that you are thinking only of yourself and not the people of Zambia who will be served by a UPND Deputy Minister! Shame on you man.
