File: President Rupiah Banda applauds after unveiling the placard during the commissioning of the first phase of the construction of infrastructure at Chipata Trades Training Institute in Chipata .

Transparency International Zambia has warned that it will consider organizing street protests to press for the removal of former President Rupiah Banda’s immunity.

In a news statement released, TIZ Executive Director Goodwell Lungu said the organisation will use all available options including street demonstrations to press Parliament to lift Mr. Banda’s immunity.

Mr. Lungu explained that Parliament should lift Mr. Banda’s immunity in the forthcoming session in order to give the former President an opportunity to clear his name.

“As TIZ, we are aware of the strong view that in order to satisfy the requirements of Mr. Banda’s lawyers and his own interest, an opportunity should be availed to the former head of state by lifting his immunity during the forthcoming session of the National Assembly,” he said.

He said TIZ and other stakeholders consistently advised the Banda administration to be more accountable on the use of public funds and resources but the advice was not heeded to.

Mr. Lungu said the mounting call for the lifting of Mr. Banda’s immunity does not come as a surprise to his organisation.

Iwe chisenga what are you talking? RB is hiding behind his immunity? Fine but what about your current leaders, they are all hiding behind the president! The fact is I don’t want them to lead me cos I know they don’t have what it take, especially Kabimba who wasn’t voted for by a single Zambian! Nchito and that clown hold the Zambian Justice system at ransom and you want to defend them? if you want protests please let it be about the current state of affairs, such as high commodity prices, fertilizer deliveries, a commission of enquiry on why Zambia failed to qualify from the group stages at the AFCON, anything else would be a better waste of time than this crap.

This is one thing that shocks me about zambia and zambians, even the so called educated one, yes striping RB of his immunity and investigating him is a good thing. But people,, people apply the law equally to all those with corrution allegations, At the moment sata has immuned kabimba and GBM for anything wrong they did or wil do. wow!,,everything about this PF government is either wrong or miss placed,,,
    >looked zambians may have lost to RB..apply the law investigate him and lets get that money back
    > Please apply that law let zambians get back their monies from nchito and mmembe
    > apply that law lets investigate kabimba and GBM
    >look zambians ´ve lost k44bn to BY because of PF being careless and excited,

Mr Lungu, let me break it down for you. It plain clear in black and white. You want to take out RB’s immunity? That is simple, Ask a PF MP to sponor the bill or even better, ask Mr Sata to go and address Parliament and urge them to lift the immunity. Once that is done, the next step will be for MPs to vote. If your camp get the two-thirds majority, you win, RB’s immunity is off. Does that help you now?

Stop wasting time PF sponsored organise protests because we know the Police will never organise anybody to protest against GBM or Kabimba. Spare us the time and go to parliament to get the immunity lifted.

And I wish you well in that endeavour

By the way stop relying on donor funds , get a real job for once

ineterests. Any genuine leader whose there for the people of Zambia should not have a problem voting for such a motion unless otherwise. So I see this as an opportunity to also see whose really genuine

It looks like Zambians do not wish to maintain the immunity our Constituion provides for the President of Zambia for actions and decision taken while in office. If this is correct let us just repeal the article from the Constitution so that a President can be sued left right and centre. We are just too petty as a people. This issue can not be about RB clearing his name. No body has tabulated any crimes that RB has committed. Do you really have to violate an important safeguard in the Constitution just because Fredy Mmembe hates somebody. How petty can a nation become especially for people like Goodwel Lungu who are supposed to only talk about matters on which they have substantial facts.

Goodwell Lungu has a point. But he’s the wrong man to bring it on. This is because when it come to RB, he seems to hate him passionately for some reason . He as a result loses objectivity. I watched him talk about RB on Mobi TV one time, he was quite emotional. I think RB immunity will be lifted, but Goodwell and TIZ are not the right candidates for this kind of call, they ve a personal agenda, a vendetta.
