Sakeni responds to Sakwiba Sikota

Information and Broadcasting Services minister Kennedy Sakeni

Chief Government spokesperson, Kennedy Sakeni has castigated United Liberal Party (ULP) leader Sakwiba Sikota for defending Robert Amsterdam’s insults on Zambians and that government was not surprised.

In a statement to ZANIS in Lusaka today the Chief Government spokesperson said the reactionary trappings in Mr Sikota’s statement are as large treacherous intentions.

Mr Sakeni, who is also Information and Broadcasting Services Minister, said it is honourable to admit when one blunders, pointing out that Mr Sikota must not justify the unjustifiable.

“There is nobody living in Zambia who was there during Mr Banda’s tenure who can argue honestly that there were no credible allegations of corruption against the former President and his children. And today Mr Banda, through his lawyer, has chosen to label Zambians idiots for calling him to account,” Mr Sakeni said.

He asked, “ what charges does Mr Banda want to be made available to him when he refused to cooperate with the law enforcement agencies, basing his dispute on his immunity?”

Mr Sakeni said clearly, people like Mr Sikota and Mr Amsterdam have misadvised their client, saying they may as well not be worth the money he is paying them.

“For us, it is good that Mr Sikota has identified himself as playing a political role because it is clear that he is not giving Mr Banda legal but political advice. The same is true with Mr Amsterdam,” Mr Sakeni observed.

He said Mr Banda is facing credible allegations of criminal activities since he refused to make himself available to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

“Let him wait, he will be given the allegations and chance to address them at an opportune time. Mr Banda and his lawyers must know that calling Zambians idiots when they insist on accountability will not make the charges he is likely to face go away,” he said.

Mr Sakeni pointed out that trying to launder himself both locally and internationally will not help him either, stating that it will just make his fall from grace faster.

He further added that it is very clear that Mr Sikota and Mr Amsterdam’s behaviour is expediting their client’s fall from grace.

“The most honourable thing Mr Banda can do either personally or through his so called lawyers is to apologise to the Zambian people for calling them idiots. We insist that Mr Banda must take full responsibility of Mr Amsterdam’s insults,” Mr Sakeni added.

Mr Sakeni noted that in any case, Mr Amsterdam does not even value the dignity of Zambians, saying his outright disrespect smacks of a classic stereotype that has no respect for Africans and Zambians in particular.

“And it is shameful for Mr Sikota to be cheerleading someone who is insulting his kind. We wonder where Mr Sikota has deposited his Zambian pride, dignity and values,” the Chief Government spokesperson asked?

well said bwana Minister….however, do not let this scam of a lawyer put you in an inferior position…you sound like someone who is suffering from inferiority complex which shouldn’t be the case. the points to make to the world are:
    1. RB has not been slapped with charges yet – but he will be soon. his lawyer is getting frustrated with govt’s delay coz he can’t wait to make cool cash out of the former village headman RB
    2. Amsterdam is making political comments on a sovereign nation
    3. RB is furnishing state secrets to a foreigner masquerading as a lawyer, hence risking national security
    4. Amsterdam does not qualify to practice law in Zambia
    5. Zambia is at peace & citizens enjoy (abuse) freedom of speech as evidenced by blogs on ZWD, Zed Eye, LT, etc.

I NEVER KNEW SAKWIBA CAN ALSO BE AN EDIOT TO ALLOW A WHITE FOREIGNER TO INSULT ZAMBIANS. IN OTHER COUNTRIES LIKE NIGERIA IT CAN’T HAPPEN A STUPID FELLA LIKE RB’s LAWYER INSULTING NIGERIANS- NO WAYS. BUT, IN ZAMBIA EVEN THE SO CALLED EDUCATED ARE SO INFERIOR THEY THINK IT IS THEIR BIRTH RIGHT TO BE INSULTED. ACTUALLY, I AM PERSONALLY SICKENED BY THIS RB’s LUNATIC.

What if he said what ever said about RB just to drop him points? Mwanawasa never said anything about Chiluba before having full information about Chiluba’s misgivings in state house. He went to parliament with no Zambian having any clue about what he was about to say in parliament. People new about Chiluba’s misgivings right there in parliament. Why cant it happen today? Why should most Zambians support what they do not know? Hence the words used to describe blind followers. In other words they are useful slow thinkers. If you are not one of them why worry.

Of the three submissions on this issue the one that is questionable is that of Sekeni. No one in Zambia is in support of corrupt leaders and, YES, we all “BELIEVED” the propaganda, against the MMD and RB in the post ever since the Post decided to back Sata. So far despite the headlines, of rampant corruption all we have seen is in terms of anything to be called “rampant” is that of Liato. The rest of the cases before the courts are nothing but political. So perhaps the call for you to OUTLINE the cases against RB is genuine and in line with the ACC. We have heard of Gold scandals, scanners, Mpundu trust fund, hotels in Malawi and Tanzania, against RB but all these have proved to mere mere speculations by your chief propagandist Sata. Campaign Bicycles is not an issue for the common…

The truth of the matter is, there is some truth to all the allegations except that such allegations call our culture into question. In Zambia, as you have rightly observed, it is difficult to tell where breach of law begins and where it ends.

Amsterdam and Sakwiba are only fit to be RB’s campaign managers than his lawyers! The stuff these two are propagating are only fit for an election campaign trial than lawyering:

    1) No one has charged RB yet for him to invoke the presidential immunity clause.

    2) A lawyer always waits until they know exactly what the other side (prosecutors) have before making careless statements.

    3) A good lawyer knows when to advise their client to hire a PR manager to handle “The Court of Public Opinion” than pretending to know it all when you clearly fall short.

    4) If Saki is wise, he should take time to really understand Amsterdam’s real motive (purely financial) here is.

    5) As a lawyer, Saki should know that Presidential immunity does not mean immunity from being investigated…

      1. The immunity clause is always there and it’s only when you lift it that you can charge someone
      2. A Lawyer should not make CARELESS statements at anytime. Clarifying the LAW and taking a considered position in a case they are involved in is not careless. Besides they have been asking for the grounds on which RB is being invited for “investigations”
      3. Nonsense
      4. Which Lawyer does is work for free
      5. We all agree but whose stoping the ACC from investigating RB? There is no LAW that compels RB to attend the ACC so why should…

    Dear Minister Sakeni,

In political jargon, useful ***** is a pejorative term for people perceived as propagandists for a cause whose goals they do not understand, and who are used cynically by the leaders of the cause.

The term has been used to refer to Soviet sympathizers in Western countries. The implication was that, although the people in question naïvely thought of themselves as an ally of the Soviet Union, they were actually held in contempt and were being cynically used. The use of the term in political discourse has since been extended to other propagandists, especially those who are seen to unwittingly support a malignant cause which they naïvely believe

Its no wonder a growing number of people are advocating for the American way; “Meritocracy in a Democracy”. That way the net will be cast far and wide. It will enable us avoid some idiocy from political buffoons and clowns whose only merit is mediocrity. Do o know the word “euphemism” Hon Minister? That’s the method Amsterdam used. Please!

I honestly think that serious credible lawyers do not issue political statements. They are work quietly and argue in court where they show how learned they are. Amsterdam’s conduct is that of a useful ***** to RB, a PR manager. He is a stooge interested in money come easy from this feeble old man. Saki knows also in this case it is paying to be a useful *****. These two have set up a “public political court” in place of a legal court where LAW-ye$ argue on points of law and legality as learned counsels. Amsterdam is NOT gonna stand in Zambian courts. Did he go to ZIALE or he expects another London court sitting?

@LION (Nkalamo), let’s put this in proper perspective. Amsterdam and RB: one of these is a useful i.d.i.o.t to another.I contend here that it is possible for one to play the role of a “useful i.d.i.o.t” KNOWINGLY if it is a sensible option under the circumstances. Man situations get tough. You need someone to launder you on the international scene, especially that by virtue of your early exit from power, you have become a statesman of role model proportions. Saki and RB: mmm mutual? 50:50? Saki is Zambian, an accomplished criminal lawyer. Can stand in the Zambian courts and argue his case with requisite familiarity with the Zambian legal system and provisions-with recourse to the consititution and possibly get RB off the hook if it gets there. Saki’s benefit for such labour?…

The Zambian way of referring to each other is really gone viral in opposition way context. Can we really call or refer to each other as what we do online – people would be fighting each other every day. There is utterely no respect. Our democracy is synonymous with demoncracy. We refer to each other as if we are not country mates, its like we now live in two parallel countries. Insults, belittling, talking down others, we are informers of ourselves to people outside our country. Its weird democracy in our country. One wonders how neighbourhoods have become. This polarisation can lead us slide to the recent Kenya scenerio. How can we change this, our way of democracy? Whatever seeds we are sowing now we shall reap the corresponding harvest.

Simply put, Democracy is a system that allows for fair representation in national dialogue. Fair representation where the sentiments of the majority prevail. Freedom of speech and the abuse thereof by the citizenry has nothing to do with democracy. It has everything to do with the culture of the people – those who care enough to vote and those who don’t.

As a lay man all I can say is that the fact that Alabi lost elections is a prema farcie case for his immunity to be removed, I mean why should a sitting president especially in Africa lose an election. People might have seen something tantamount to corruption hence the need for him, his friends, kin and kith to be probed nothing wrong, just o satisfy the voters. Not crying in South Africa.
