Riots break out in Livingstone as HH , William Banda and others are arrested

Riots have broken out in Livingstone bringing business in the tourist capital to a standstill after UPND cadres ran amok following the arrest of their leader Hakainde Hichilema.

Shops have been closed and some roads in the city centre blocked by UPND cadres protesting against Mr. Hichilema’s arrest.

Police are using teargas to disperse the cadres who are demanding the release of Mr. Hichilema who has been detained at Livingstone Central Police.

Mr. Hichilema was arrested a while ago in connection with the death of a PF official identified as Harrison Chanda.

The late Chanda who was Monze PF District Chairman is believed to have been killed during a political clash between PF cadres and their UPND rivals in Livingstone yesterday.

Mr. Hichilema was picked up this afternoon after the police surrounded the Lodge he was staying at.
Others picked up include William Banda and Mr. Hichilema’s special adviser Douglas Siakalima.
The police are yet to slap any charges on Mr. Hichilema and the other party officials.

And Home Affairs Minister Edgar Lungu has disclosed during a media briefing in Livingstone this afternoon that the UPND officials were picked up to help with investigations.

Mr. Lungu said the number of those picked up so far in connection with Mr. Chanda’s murder stands at 27.

Mazabuka MP Garry Nkombo and his Kalomo counterpart Request Mutanga along with other cadres were arrested last night in connection with Mr. Chanda’s murder.

Mr. Lungu also revealed that police have picked up sharp instruments from the UPND command centre in Livingstone which they suspect could have been used in the murder.

The Home Affairs Minister accused the UPND of resorting to violence after realizing that it was losing Thursday’s bye election.

Police Inspector General Stella Libongani and Southern Province Police Chief Charity Katanga attended the briefing.

Meanwhile, the UPND has described the arrest of its key officials and other cadres as an act of intimidation.

UPND Spokesman Charles Kakoma said the Zambia Police is been used by the PF government to cripple the UPND’s campaign machinery in Livingstone.

He was speaking in Parliament this afternoon when he rose on a point of order over the arrest of the UPND MP’s and other officials.

Speaker of the National Assembly Patrick Matibini has since ordered the state through the Vice President or Home Affairs Minister to present a statement to Parliament on Thursday over the arrest of the UPND MP’s.

And And Southern province police commissioner Charity Katanga also confirmed that UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema was apprehended with 9 others at White Rose Lodge along Lusaka Road in Livingstone.

“Hichilema who was apprehended around 16:00 hours has been charged with proposing violence contrary to section 91 (1) of chapter 87 of the laws of Zambia,” she said.

Mrs Katanga said William Banda was arrested with 14 others in Ellen Brittel. She added that all the people that had been arrested would be screened to help police with investigations.

She said the police were geared to ensure that peace prevails in the Livingstone by election.

Firstly one mwaliteta´s cook is murdered bare feet throw by the roadside, his shoes later found in his hotel room, mwaliteta´s first reactions fingers UPND with questionable explanation that the victim ´walkout to ask a phone call´ when UPND cadres murdered him. To date we are stil waiting for an update from the police… now on the latest issue it was very careless and stupid for PF leaders to allow their chibuku drunk boys to go and attack their rival camp,, stranger than fiction both victims are NOT from livingstone… the question is why?.. if these two boys were not imported into livingstone no death would have be record.. period. These are blood scrifices!

    • Oh Please, come on Mushota, those are basics that a grade 9 knows. Why don’t you ask something complex like Discounted cash flow (DCF). That is what you would expect to confuse a PhD student , especially the analysis of DCF

    • Both are possible! You can go out of business with healthy profits without being liquid because you won’t meet mostly the operational costs. It is also possible your healthy cash flow may not be good enough e.g you buy something for $1000 and sell it for $900 a thousand times over. Your cash flow is healthy but the losses will ultimately kill off the business.

Him and William Banda are the high priests of violence. All forms of violence should be condemned, whether authored by UPND, PF, MMD or NAREP. This has escalated to this level because of having a compromised police force where certain cadres have now got a feeling that they can do whatever they want and get away scot free. All unbaised Zambians can see the pattern in all these incidents and what the outcome has always been.

  19. The Zambian Police service is chasing a wild goose this time around. They are trying to build a case against Hakainde Hichilema on opportunistic tendencies. Mr.HH ‘s remarks about urging his rank and file membership to ‘react’ to the presence of PF hooligans in the vicinity of UPND quarters does not amount to ‘inciting violence’. ‘React’ does not mean/translate into lawful/unlawful killing of another person or does it inform the use of any form of force which can incapacitate a targeted oponent.
    ‘React’ in this context can be interpreted in a number of ways and none of them can lead to the conviction of Mr.HH beyond reasonable doubts.
    Further, the police charges are minor and laughable. We pity these desperate inexperienced police officers, pity.

  20. It is sad to listen to some comments with implicit irresponsibility. Nobody is above the law. There is no justified reason to butcher a human person to death. It is unfortunate to note that leadership of some political parties, can run out of common sense and resort to violence and anarchy to find their way to the State House. From my view point that is a clear-cut disqualification. Zambia needs economic managers for President not freedom fighters, when there is no colony. Shame to the Anarchist party!

    • You are not helping things at all by such comments. The gvt should be seen to put in place conditions in which every human being will be free and respected. There are electoral cord of conduct in Zambia e.g. cadres of party should not come to the camp of another party within a stated distance. These codes of conduct were put in place to prevent things like such deaths.       Do not be confined to extreme versions of ‘react’. Be holistic in your approach, in any given argument, one would always run away from being precise. The sole premise for this behaviour is not be held responsible for any future possibility of an occurance/a happening which might be remotely or directly connected to your own utterances.
      It is the responsbility of a presiding judge to put questions at lengthy to Mr. HH and ascertain exactly what did he mean by the word ‘react’. It is easier for persons without legal backgrounds to charge Mr.HH and call for premature celebrations.
      He, Mr. HH must clarify his part before a judge and, even during cross-examination, a prosecutor will not achieve anything good for the state. ‘React’ can also mean to ‘look’ at someone…

What was Chanda doing in Livingstone to warrant his life being sacrified to promote PF supremacy even in regions where their polularity is non-existence?   55. UPND be very careful of the traps being set before you, retaliation in the name of self defense is not the solution they will implicate you with a tag of violence. No one will know the difference between who is violent between PF and UPND. An example is Uhuru and Ruto of Kenya facing trial at the Hague .Uhuru is accused of retaliation. Have seen cadres provoking each other.Me as an innocent bystander was almost beaten for being there until some cadre helped me.This kind of behavior is becoming out of control until both parties agree to disagree.It takes two to tangle, having experienced cadre violence,I believe both parties are guilty.It’s now up to Mr.HH and Mr.Sata to speak against this violence provoked by unemployed youths.It is sad because ordinaly people just want peace but this cadres have sown loyalty to their parties and they represent a minimal fraction of the electorate.Please control this thugs before they eliminate each other.My unemployed cousin almost became an MMD cadre,I had to counsel him to stop although he lost a plot of land in Lusaka given free of charge.Please control this people!

      It is really sad that politics has become so violent, and lives are being lost. This trends makes it hard for one to think of a future in Zambia where political supporters will be more interested in real issues that affect them just a few pints of chibuku and attacking and killing each other. Supporters need to wake up and question their leaders on the many developmental issues affecting Zambia than simply being used by politicians. Politics is about finding ways to have a better Zambia.

  88. Unfortunately HH and UPND are taking the same path that saw the demise of Nkumbula’s ANC. Some of us who were there during the UNIP and ANC period remember how violent ANC was. People used to die in by elections and that was one reason Kaunda pushed for the one party state. Those with short memories should recall the by elections in mapatizya,mufumbwe, chilanga, rufunsa and now in Livingstone. UPND fought with the MMD and now with the PF.
