Government is investigating the case in which 11 Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) senior managers whose contracts were terminated without giving reasons last month.

Mines Minister Yamfwa Mukanga said in an interview yesterday that Government was concerned with any loss of jobs because its vision was to create more jobs for Zambians.

Mr Mukanga said he would engage the Ministry of Labour and Social Security on the matter and warned mine owners to desist from terminating contracts of locals without issuing valid reasons at the expense of expatriates.

He said he would issue a comprehensive statement next week after concluding the investigations and that he was keen to know how many expatriates were affected.

“Any termination of employment without thorough consultations is not right even if it is one person affected, I have to move in. Government will not accept loss of jobs because we want to create more jobs,” he said.

The minister explained that it was wrong to see locals lose jobs and replaced by expatriates.

“It is wrong to have Zambians replaced by expatriates but I am yet to get the reasons on why KCM terminated contracts and I want to know how many expatriates were affected. I want to know who is taking up the jobs of the managers. After getting the reasons, I will make a serious statement,” he warned.

Last month, KCM dismissed 11 senior managers who were in full time and pensionable employment reportedly in a bid to ‘down size’ their workforce.

The affected workers, however, wondered why it was only Zambian senior members of staff who were affected if the termination of employment was genuinely meant to reduce the labour force.

Chingola District Commissioner George Sichula met KCM management who told him that the affected senior managers were a liability and a cost to the company.

Labour and Social Security Minister Fackson Shamenda urged both local and foreign investors not to deliberately flout labour laws and warned employers to desist from terminating contracts of workers without giving reasons.

  1. Taking Zambianization to another level.Anyway it depends on what is in the contract. These guys can do anything aslong as they know that it is legal. The moral of the story is….check your contract before you start work lest you cry foul play.

    • those 11 bemba senior officials were jerabos… and PF cadres, yes a big risk and threat to business…so terminating their contracts was in line with sound busines practice.

    • Just joined facebook not sure its something i should have done. i dont want too many zamban friends on it but i already have friends wow

      Thanks

    • @Mushota.Whats your user name so that i can take a look at your profile picture ? I want to make judgement like you have been doing on a lot of women like Masebo and Nkandu Luo.

    • I tried to search it.Is that truly you in the picture or some model like you have done in your avatar ?

  2. So why are you saying its bad to terminate if you dont even know the reason why they were terminated have first the facts before saying anything.

  3. This is very, very poor reporting. What does the other side say about this? Was any effort made to get their contact or input in this? This is small wonder that we incite unnecessary speculation by suppressing one side of the story needlessly. I am aware that most contracts are renewed at the pleasure of the employer and that employer need not necessary disclose reasons for doing so. In any case, even the employee has that pleasure not to continue with an employer so what is the problem? Anyhow, lets see how this plays out…

  4. All zambian men i have known and met are corrupt so this is not much news to some of us
It is not strange that some of us ‘must have’ Zambian women are not opting to be with foreigners, it is the zambian men ‘s loss and the foreigners gain with such an attitude, please change

    Thanks

    • May the good Lord deliver you from your Misdemeanours. Your reasoning is pathetic and I don’t blame you as you are a replica of your ego. If at all you don’t have anything constructive to say the best advice I can give to you is PLEASE don’t comment on matters that you can’t digest regarless of where you are. “All zambian men i have known and met are corrupt so this is not much news to some of us” YOU ARE PART OF THE CORRUPTION PERIOD BECAUSE YOU HAVE WINED & DINED WITH THEM.

    • Just to clarify I meant the ones I have met, and I stand by that
I suppose you are fortunate I havet met you!

Now crawl under the bridge you sorry excuse of a human being.

      Thanks

    • Pls give me your Facebook user name, i want to be your friend on facebook and start dating you afterwards o.k

  5. IS THIS GOVT REALLY TRYING TO CREAT JOBS FOR EVERY ZAMBIAN. WHEN YOU BELONG TO THE BEMBA CLAN THEY FIGHT FOR YOU IF YOU ARE FIRED BUT JUST LAST WEEK THEY FIRED ALL THE LOZI DIRECTORS FROM ENERGY AND REPLACED THEM WITH BEMBAS. SHAME ON YOU AND YOU SAY THERE IS NOT TRIBALISM IN PF. PF THIS WILL MAKE YOU FALL. GO AHEAD AND DESTROY YOURSELF BECAUSE NOT ALL BEMBAS SUPPORT WHAT YOU ARE DOING THEY ARE DISGUTED WITH YOU SO THEIR VOTES WILL GO TO A NON BEMBA IN 2016.

    • what are you investigating ,Bembas will only be employed by Ukwa at the moment because they are thieves period .If i had a company i would not employ any Kolwe no matter how educated they are crooks, look at what they are doing to the government money.I feel like crying.Well done Mopani mines.

  6. This old song of expatriates taking over jobs or doing jobs that can be done by zambians must come to an end. WHO issues these expatriates with work permits? Therein lies the solution.

    • This govt is useless. don’t the companies send monthly labour returns? don’t they already have details on shortfalls on the labour market before issuing work permits? Don’t they refer to local skill base (un-employed) before giving out work permits?

    • The same govt issues work permits to indians and peruvians on daily basis. Don’t they know that they come to replace zambians? Peruvians are replacing zambians every day at MOPANI

    • expatriates take the jobs coz they do the jobs. having a paper qualification is not enough and in zambia these papers mean nothing. zambians need to wake up and do the job and stop thinking they owed a job. if they are so super qualified why they not get jobs in peru? coz they cant do the job. the zambian who can do the job are all living outside the country coz they do not want to work with zambians here always demanding more and not doing their work. time for you to demand proper education and qualifications from our government and to do the work and not going to funerals and complaining all day.

  7. Its not only in KCM. Many other companies run by foreigners do the same. These rats! are really racist. When you look at some Indians at KCM, they are like villagers in TROPICALS and CANVAS.

    • But these Indians work hard! We had ZCCM, which should have been an international mining giant by now. Instead we ran it into the ground. Instead, we are now working for a new-comer like Vedanta. ZCCM was destroyed by Kafupi and all the greedy and selfish Zambians. Some of us worked at ZCCM and remember how Zambian managers colluded with expatriates to frustrate young Zambian graduates. So before you condemn foreigners, look in the mirror first!

  8. The beginnings of a political demise is always linked to loss of confidence by stake holders in its economic failures. One of the phantom myth linkages is down sizing of either its investment portifolios or labour sheding to minimise costs. This will never surprise any student of basic economics let alone macroeconomics vis-as-vis microeconomic dynamics. The vergue economic strategies and policies exhibited by the PF govt that fail to navigate the demands and deliver expectations to locals sends clear messages of uncertanity to investors. Unsafe political landscape created by govt results in varied ramifications under the disguise of mean but smart economic decisions to which govt has little to say. That’s one option of KCM, its PF govt ball to play safe or exit.

  9. Sorry fellow blog folk – was away on global scanning assignments for months. As my sixth sense scampered near home for latest govt news while in America, precission was may-dayed that Mr Sata was leaving the country to un known destination. Confirmation affirmed on arrival on 27/02/2013. Since then, the nation is again in the dark as to the whereabouts of our president. Instant Messaging Technology (IMT)has kicked off to determine definitive domicilary. Lod on for latest.

  10. What are their names? kwaliba ka manager kamo akatumpa,he frustrated in 6 months and i was off.but goodness i screwed the young sister as revenge

  11. Our rebased man of action SATA is missing again……he left the country to un known destination hope its not because of poor running the govt especially the economy..

  12. Don’t harass innocent KCM management but Ministry of Labour which issues permits every day not knowing the equation involved. If you issue 1 permit, you displace 1 local. If the laws allow it or officers who issue work permits are either corrupt or inefficient, why can’t KCM take advantage of the loophole. They rightfully need control of their investments. Also diversity of staff is very important for Zambia and Zambians if necessary to co-exist and we are benefiting from it. Create your own jobs and encourage ordinary Zambians to open their own companies to employ Zambians but not forming political parties, churches, taverns/bars, night clubs every day, which impoverish Zambians, empowering foreign investors with tax incentives disadvantaging local investors. You have bargained for it.

    • Brillian comment and this takes me to a ZNBC report yesterday about youth empowerment. Viewers were shown a young man in Livingstone who has set up a ram-shackle tarven made of grass by the road-side and was praised for setting up such a business and right inside that ram-shackle was a youth, who looked drunk and was sleeping and that could have been about mid-day when one is expected to be doing productive work? talk about youth empowerment indeed?

  13. Why do all PF ministers look like schoolboy oafs? If you’re going to be the Minister of Mines (one of the highest profile jobs in Zambia), at least the fellow should know to fix his collar …..not to mention, buy a suit that fits!

  14. Yes investigate them. this is our county and resources –copper, why should we be replaced by foreigners? Please PF do something.

Peace and Prosperity to Mother Zambia

  15. 2 thing bwana minister , Mukanga needs to look at urgently:-
    1. Overeating: its not a competition sir, eat less and stay healthy
    2. Bathing: I know water can be a problem in Zambia, but a ka good bath even though its not taken daily will greatly improve you image sir.

  16. THAT’S WAT CORRUPTION AND LAZYNESS CAN DO.MOST ZAMBIANS ARE LAZY WHO EXPECT HUGE RETURNS. I CAN’T COMDEMN KCM COZ THEY MAY HAVE GENUINE REASONS.FELLOW ZAMBIANS U A SAD STORY. U ARE CAPABLE OF RUNNING DOWN ANY COMPANY IF LEFT UNCHECKED. CHANGE PLEASE!

  17. WHY KEEP LIABILITIES?THOUGH SAD THEY MUST GO. ARE THERE NO CONTROLS PUT IN PLACE IN ISSUEING WORK PERMITS? ZAMBIANS ARE THERE ON ENERMIES.

  18. These are the same people who were working with Indians to oppress fellow Zambians. They have been dumped after being used to do all the dirty work for a few dollars. They made the Indians who they are and they have themselves to blame.

  19. kcm is a worst mining company with there coming in of david kaunda lembalemba.wat he dd when he just was to frustrate most zambian managers and brought in his own within 2 months. among them was vincent chakulya hr mgr, joshua milinga training mgr, louis mwaba hr mgr, njanji head hr, simwawa snr hr officer, pius jere snr hro, robby mumba snr hro and the list is endless now he brouht in his own even banda hr mgr, priscila kaunda phiri training mgr his pure niece, israel simonze hr mgr fornicator, elizabeth moyo recruited all the way from uk and bomped by israel simonze right in there kcm office on there mine plants n there list is endless. joyce kapijimpanga is another character who thinks KCM is hers she is arrogant and busy employing her embaciles children at cost of deserving she must…

  20. Zambians lack business acumen….Is this a surprise to you guys. Indians work 24/7, and 12 hours per diem, sacrificing family life for the company. Did Davig N’gandu and Keith Kapui do that. They were trying ti back stab Vedanta at the least opportunity. Foreigners visiting KCM were able to decipher such dissent, as these guys could not conceal their profound dissent! Our culture dictates that 100% allegiance must be shown/given to the company…the hand that feeds you!!!

  21. It was a good move to terminate contracts for these thieves called JERABOS. Give contracts to deserving Zambians

  22. Hey i know a number of the managers who where fired or rather their contracts terminated without notification. At least three of them where involved in fraud related activities which could have ended them up in jail but the company decided to just relieve them of their duties.one of them was fond of employing girlfriends who could not deliver work wise and firing people who where more productive to the company. They deserve it i think
