Polls close in Livingstone

Time Posted: March 14, 2013 6:43 pm

Voting has closed in the re-scheduled Livingstone central parliamentary by-elections.

Polls opened this morning on a peaceful note but with poor voter turnout.

Counting of ballots is now underway with results expected to start trickling in after 19:00hours.

The Electoral Commission of Zambia postponed the Livingstone by elections which were initially sheduled to take place on 28th February, 2013 due to political violence in the area.

Four political parties are participating in the elections with the ruling Patriotic Front fielding in Evans Lawrence, Regina Musokotwane standing on the opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) ticket, Movement for Multi party Democracy (MMD’s) Fred Siasuntwe and United National Independence Party (UNIP’s) Green Mwanangombe.

Livingstone Central constituency has 67, 732 registered voters, 61 polling stations, 17 wards and 101 voting streams.

I don’t understand why they picked this woman just because her husband was a politician. It reminds me of how Maureen grew big headed and wanted to be president at one time until RB put her in her place.Shame on these women find something else to do.Poverty at the highest level.

Low voters turnout favors the ruling party. These polls whoever wins, they have no credibility

We will wait and see what happens. However there is need for the ECZ to be logical and decide whether low voter turn out means that the events leading to rescheduling have led to unfairness. If such was to be the case then this is not democractic and more time should be given before elections are held in a more fair manner. People are clearly feeling disenchanted by the events and it might make sense to postpone them further. If possible after the case in court has been decided so that people know which party is violent and make informed decisions

Considering the circumstances I would expect the ruling party to win. That however is only a testament of the serious erosion of credibility of our electrol process. So sad that our dear country has been completely raped of all dignity. At the very least the peoples real voices have been heard ” ..Change is coming and it is inevitable”!

At the rate things are going in Zambia, any reasonable person can predict very dangerous violence in 2016 that could pit the country on the verge of a civil war. Zambia has never descended to these levels of uncivilized politics…even colonialism was heaven compared to the buffoonery way that PF is running this country. It is shocking. I just feel for the vulnerable who are always the victims. The fact that now we have a situation where a newspaper like WatchDog can have leaked election results even before they are announced means that even those people working for PF govt are now very unhappy with PF and its manner of governance. There is no government now…it is each one for himself. PF may have won the election, BUT they have lost the country and its people.
