17 people were killed in Road Traffic Accidents countrywide during the Easter holiday.
Police Spokesperson Elizabeth Kanjela said a total number of 203 road traffic accidents were recorded over the Easter holiday.

Lusaka was the hardest hit with 111 Road Traffic Accidents recorded where four people died.

Northern Province had the least number of accidents with only two recorded with no deaths.

And Ms. Kanjela said there was an increase in both the number of accidents and lives lost this year compared to last Easter Holiday when 112 accidents recorded with four lives lost.

She said the increase of accidents could be attributed to the increase in the number of vehicles on the road compared to last year.

“Also the fact that being holiday unlike any other days people turn to have time to drive around and also want to visit different places as they are not in offices,” she said.

She said, “Drinking and driving is another contributing factor as many people turn to drink too much.”

And in other cases, Ms. Kanjela said ten murder cases of murder of which two involved spouses were recorded.

She said the other five cases involved people that are related or friends while the other three cases were committed by unknown people and investigations are on.

Ms. Kanjela said two cases of defilement were reported and including one rape case during the Easter weekend.

She said close to 100 assault cases where reported country wide of which most of them are by known people.

“Once more we would want to urge people to try and dialogue by all means whenever there is a misunderstanding unlike resorting to physical violence,” she said.

  1. When will the bleeding stop? We need to employ a multifaceted approach to stop this carnage or we all perish.

We are all affected one way or the other.

Its must include among other things: sealing the loopholes in licensing, vehicle fitness, improved and increased road network, stiffer punishment for drunken driving.

We must consider investing in camera technology to catch speeders as well

  2. The Zambn WatchDog is rarely wrong with its stories. Certainly more credible than the Post and definitely “more breaking news” than Lusaka Times. With those two in its favor, you have to say they are number one! This watchdog has been digging several truths in the recent past. At least 99.99999 percent of what they have foretold has come to pass. E.g.
    • They reported that PF has bribed 3 UPND Mps with ministerial positions way before it was in public domain and we have seen it come to pass.
    • ZWD told us that there were plans to debate RB’s immunity and eventually lift it on such and such a day way before ZNBC talked about it and it came to pass…

  3. Read The Post editorial and use your brains to do so, you‘ll understand what is going on. By the way if you have been following the nature of Fred’s editorials they are always contextual. They don’t just fall from heaven, they usually have a basis. The question you should ask yourself is why should Fred talk about political successors now- who has died or who is yet to step down?(Giving a eulogy on Finance Minister Chikwanda and encouraging him to visit rural areas for instance)
•When the Post reported that Sata was in Zambia,ZWD reported that he was in India receiving medical attention and it was true…

  4. @Chanda:
Your level of retardation qualifies you for permanent confinement in a medical institution.

You are the people who accept and are so content living in filth surroundings, going to dirty hospitals and school because your poorly developed brain cant conjure anything beyond the smell of rotten food.

suggest something that makes sense then there might a reconsideration to your confinement…. its your last chance!!

  5. Too bad for my brothers and sisters in Zambia. 17 people over easter, The time we are suppose worship our lord Jesus christ. RATSA and the police needs to work extra hard on such ocassions to reduce the number of losses.I agree its time we invested in road (traffic) cameras. we have a lot of money and we can afford to purchase those tiny things. M.T.S.R.I.P

  6. Very sad about loosing 17 lives during easter long weekend.my heartiest condolances to all the bereaved families.Only solution to these accidents on our roads are the police and govt should interduce tougher laws on drunken drivers and police should take a breath test on the spot on suspected drunken drivers and if the limit of alcohol is over the limit in their blood than they should be arrested on the spot and their driving licence should be endorsed with 5 year full ban and be jailed if they have caused an accident .during long weekend holidays all the bars and shabeens must not be allowed to open long hours .only hotels and licenced restaurants should be allowed to serve alcohol.

  7. Please tulekopako na ku fyalo fimbi, some countries they don’t sell alcohol on some of the holidays like Easter holidays, because it’s the time to worship and they know how people can behave on that long weekend. Please government you can do better than this to stop this nonsense of drinking and driving.

  8. Sisi you are trying too hard to impress but is slipping badly
I hope you choke on your own puke

You talk so much nonsense it’s not even funny kolwe .

  9. @chanda
Having missed your last chance to redeem yourself, you are now a confirmed and certified retard to be permanently confined to a medical asylum facility.

  10. @ POPE FRANCIS
We can’t agree more than what you say. Overwhelming evidence is proved by 000s of Zambians that ZWD is the only dependable, unbiased news channel for Zambia today.

  11. May the lord have messy on us all .may he forgive those who insult and demean others. In the same way smoking dagga is illegal beer drinking should be barned . The brain damage caused by this act is equally deadly . so many broken homes crime and accidents HIV infections etc as a result of this beer drinking. the mere fact that the govt. collect taxes and the economic impact of beer consumption is no justification for a govt. of Christian country to legalise this evil act. I enjoy drinking my beer but to be honest the negative impact to our society is quite unrepairable. I admire Islamic states when it come to moral related laws

  12. Never ever ever ever ever suggest that they ban beer.Just like guns don’t kill people because it’s people who killl people! The rule is simple don’t drink and drive alas *****s do not listen!
