Mongu District Commissioner Maurice Litula has advised Zambia Electricity Supply Company (ZESCO) limited to explore the vast energy resource in bio-fuel.

Mr. Litula says if the Utility firm can exploit the vast resource in bio-fuel because of the huge cattle population in the area, it will have an alternative source of power for the district and the entire nation.

ZANIS reports that District Commissioner was speaking at a District focus sensitization workshop on energy organized by the Energy Regulation Board held at the Provincial Conference hall in Mongu yesterday.

Mr. Litula noted that the creation of more districts will facilitate the opening up of more filling stations and other fuel deficit areas in the Province.

He has since urged ZESCO and the Energy Regulation Board to actively work with his office, the local authority and other key stakeholders to address numerous energy concerns in Mongu district.

Western province is mainly a cattle land where the people in the area have lived on and at times depend on the domestic animals for their livelihood both economically and socially.

Meanwhile, Energy Regulation Board Manager for Southern Region Allen Polito said the board’s role is to implement government policies.

  1. Just because there are a lot of cattle in WP does not mean it would make sense to develop bio-gas. As the DC should know, these cattle roam all over the place. Is the District Commissioner so out of touch that he imagines ZESCO trucks driving across the flood plains chasing cows to pick up their s***?

Maybe this is why he says the new districts will facilitate the opening of more filling stations?

    • Ever heard of a kraal? Cattle have to sleep somewhere. It is a protected area called a kraal. This is where they leave most of their droppings . They certainly dont spend the whole day and night roaming.

    • Great, so you suggest driving all around everywhere from scattered kraal to scattered kraal? That’s makes good energy sense… ever heard of cost benefit? No matter how you slice it, WP is huge and the population (even cattle population) is very sparse!

    • @BraveFace – how daft can you be, man? Is there any resource on earth that is ever found all in one place to pick up? If you don’t know about cattle ask the people that live with the animals for solutions. On the other hand, although the DC had a point, this should be more a private sector initiative. Producing Bio-fuel is far less complicated…the villages themselves can form small cooperatives and apply for funds from the Empowerment Commission. This idea of always asking for help from centyral government is failing to use one’s brains. No wonder Zambia is not developing. Democracy and privatisation will only work for local people in the end if the citizens try to be creative and not just sit back and expect to be served! Use your brains…!!!

  2. That can work on a small scale basis…crazy to think Zesco should use cow dung on a commercial basis. Crazy stuff

  3. Exactly Zesco should start investing in other sources of energy too. Bio fuels, solar, wind ,coal which we have in abundance or even Nuclear power plant after all we have Uranium from Lumwana.

  4. Its far cheaper if ZESCO invested in Solar Power Plants instead like our SA counterparts who are currently building one of the largest Solar Power Plants in world.

  5. Biogas generation will only be efficient if the cattle were managed in an intensive farming kind of setup e.g feedlot systems. The extensive farming methods employed by our brothers in the West are going to make such an excercise absolutely senseless. The potential for massive expansion of hydro electric power is immense. It makes more sense to go this route as we already have the expertise required to run such infrastructure.

  6. What about USING lozi’s AMAFI to be used as Bio-fuel? Their is alot of FARTING in western province we can harness the GAS
