Concerned citizen calls for subsidy indaba

Share

A senior citizen in Ndola has called on government to call for a national indaba to help people understand the removal of maize and fuel subsidies.

Humphrey Ngulube, a retired teacher, told ZANIS in an interview in Ndola yesterday that government should listen to the cries of the people about the issues of the removal of subsidies as they have not understood the concept properly.

Mr Ngulube said indabas are healthy for a nation as people pour out their opinions, adding that they feel part of those whom government can trust.

He said there was need, therefore, for a national indaba to be convened for all political parties, all concerned stakeholders and government in order to discuss pertinent issues that have rocked the country on the withdrawal of maize and fuel subsidies.

He also commended the Copperbelt University for its research and discussions on the removal of fuel subsidies.

  1. Saiko Mata does not listen to anybody, this indaba will just be a waste of resources…lets just move on and see which direction the the economic paradigm takes us…

  2. Who is this guy? This article is so boring and shouldnt have been published. It looks like this teacher just wants some attention.drop it off.

  3. Ghana removed subsidies on fuel a few days ago and Ghanians have not protested or called for black fridays. The problem in Zambia is people are used to getting free things. They want the government to give them everything without working for it.It is a shame that even people who claim to be learned are alo on the band wargon of those that need to be educated on the benefits of subsidy removals. We need to sacrifice a bit for the country to move forward.

    • It is because Ghana does not have a bloated government with 82 cabinet ministers and deputy ministers. Ghanaian Ministers and their Deputies also don’t get a 800 litres fuel allowance per month. Neither does the Ghanaian First lady behave like a modern day Marie Antoinette with a public budgetary allocation she does not deserve. Neither is the sitting Ghanaian President building his retirement home from public funds when he has not actually retired. Ghanaians haven’t been bombarded with bye elections brought about by the ruling party using public funds to buy off the opposition MPs. Context is very important.

    • What A Country, you cannot compare Ghana’s economy to that of Zambia. Ghana is far much richer than Zambia and so the standard of living for its citizens is fair. And as for sacrifice, for how long are we going to sacrifice as common people while them (politicians) are filling up their coffers?

  4. GOOD THOUGHT. THERE IS NO HARM IN HAVING A DEBATE ON THIS UNFAMILIAR SCENARIO OF SUBSIDY REMOVAL ON ESSENTIAL COMMODITIES IN OUR LAND.

  5. are u going to provide money for the organization and allowances for those who are going to take part. why should we wast money on an indaba again?

  6. Just ask them one question, let them split the cost of fuel ie show us how much fuel costs from source and disclose the added taxes on top of the cost price up to the level where the so called subsidy is being applied, then you will see how they are trying to cheat us.There has never been any subsidy on fuel. What is there is just taxes and taxes, now they have introduced another tax on fuel but they would prefer to call it “subsidy removal”
How come fuel in zambia costs the highest in the region if there was a subsidy applied?Where there is a subsidy the cost goes down not a situation where subsidised commondity costs highest in the region.
Give us the cost breakdown for us to understand more pls..

  7. Are we not over this issue? N.iggaz learn to move forward,no 1 has died yet, people are adjusting there budgets.i don’t see the poor people u talk about, the so called poor are making millions selling Salaula and tomatoes tax free, the only poor people around are the working class wearing ties under this sun.seriously lets jus see how this plays out quit complaining,if they don’t do anything tangible u can complain

  8. This is being dull. Lets move on while we work hard. People in Villages don’t enjoy the so called subsidies. Still there is a subsidy on fertilizer of 50% now a reduction from the 75% previously.

Peace and Prosperity to Mother Zambia.
