Press Release

ZAMBIA DAILY MAIL ‘STORY’ LACKS MERIT

LUSAKA, 5thJuly, 2013—We wish to dismiss the story that appeared in the Zambia Daily Mail edition of today, Friday, 5th July, 2013, under the headline “RB plots against Nevers Mumba” with the contempt it deserves.

To begin with, we would like to place on record our admiration for the professionalism that nearly all journalists at the Daily Mail continue to exhibit in their pursuit of fair and balanced reporting.

There is no fairness, however, in the story that has alleged that His Excellency Rupiah Bwezani Banda, the Fourth President of the Republic of Zambia, is working with Solwezi member of Parliament Lucky Mulusa to replace opposition Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) president Nevers Mumba.

While the story alleges that there is “an elaborate plan to oust” Dr Mumba, there is no demonstration of how that plan is to be carried out and how much Mr Banda is involved.

Mr Banda should, therefore, not be drawn into a matter that is entirely an MMD’s or, as MMD deputy national secretary Chembe Nyangu has stated, the work of those “outside the party”.

The former president has been in retirement since he voluntarily relinquished the MMD presidency early last year and, although he is constitutionally eligible to run for the republican presidency again, has decided to devote his time to challenges at continental level.

In an effort to give credence to the Daily Mail story, the anonymous author even goes further to say an effort was made to phone the former president whose phone “went unanswered” and that his aides “did not pick up calls”.

We wish to state that at no time yesterday was President Banda or any of his assistants called by the Daily Mail regarding any story.

Our humble advice is that if there are any journalists at the Daily Mail who would like to justify their appointments, there are better ways of doing that than by thriving on concoctions that do not add value to the journalism profession.

We also take this opportunity to state that President Banda is a firm believer in constitutionalism, which is why he agrees with MMD deputy national secretary Mr Chembe Nyangu’s statement that a party convention is the best platform for replacing political party leaders

    • Tell them Mr. Limwanya. But when you distance yourself from the so-called “elaborate plan to to oust” Dr. Mumba, please concern yourselves ONLY with the aspect of RB not being part of it rather than HOW the plan is to constituted…

  1. I guess the last statement summarises it all because it has left me questioning the issued statement lol!

  2. This makes the story sound true. The author doesn’t outright praise NEVERS Mumba but goes to say a convention is the platform to replace.
But we heard about a month ago the other MMD faction quoted MMD constitution saying extra ordinary convention can be called if over half of the provincial leaders call for it which they have already done.
It is now NEVERS Mumba and NEC fighting hard to block that.

  3. Really? well it doesn’t surprise me that people like Rupiah become firm believers in constitutionalism only when they leave office. The same way he views defeat as retirement. How can a retired employee be considered as retired and given all the benefits?

We must have the courage to revisit and amend the presidential retirement benefit Act

    Ubupuba muleke, mwe mfuko mwe

    • Ati ‘challenges at a continental level’. When the chap failed to tackle challenges in his own country. Are these Assistants to RB paid by the Zambian tax payer or RB? If we are the one paying them please fire them when time comes. Anyway who knows they may be getting a bit extra on the side for making such useless statements on RB’s behalf. Yalikosa pa Zed

  4. which would be of great benefit to the mmd, getting rid of mumba or retaining him at the healm and continue losing seats?
i think rb and mulusa should just go ahead and unsit this pastor so that he goes back to the pulpit were he belongs.

    • Guess if your name contains the word “Slow” you’re slow to understand that the role of clergy has changed and they have a cardinal role in shaping society. This includes politics.

  5. The daily mail and such like media are being run by devils bent on causing confusion in the opposition camp.

  6. President Rupiah Bwezani Banda,as always a man of honour,a man of honesty and a man of integrity who follows established tenets. These are the traits that his wide recognition abroad is built on.

  7. Bwezani Banda ,the ultimate personification of zambian diplomacy and int’l goodwill, our ambassadeur on the int’l scene and a wrongly persecuted innocent lamb.

  8. Of course it’s a cooked up story but RB is just being given his own medicine. The media was terrible in his time and he made no effort at rectifying this sucking up to authority behaviour

    • I think you meant to sayno effort “TO RECTIFY”.

The rest of the sentence is nonsense. ‘Sucking up to authority’ is an action, not a behavior.

  9. Yes. Banda shld come back to active politics bcoz:- Firstly, now all Zambians can clearly see for themselves that SATA is not a LEADER. Sata is not a Manager. What he is we dont know. KK told us that SATA can only work under someone”s supervision. Now we all can see. SATA promised farmers 30 bags of free fertilizer, subsidy. But instead he first reduced the 8 under MMD to 4 bags under PF. Now even the 4 is gone, Farmers will b paid fertiliser for their maize. they will now eat fertilizer. Even KK has now gone quite. What a Leaderless, this SATA. Petrol double price in the SADC region. Secondly, SATA wants to discredit Banda with these court trips. Banda must stand up for Zambia & for himself. Australians have brot back a former President due to medicrity. SATA must b removed by all means.

    • As usual pa nsaka tapabula chipuba kwati Zulu. Read through what you have posted and see if you can make any sense of it.

  10. I feel bad for Never Mumba. I feel bad for him because it seems to me that he has not had the necessary support – moral from the MMD leadership. ‘am a person who believes that not all are born leaders. On the other hand, all can become good leaders if given the necessary support needed to run particular Institutions. Additionally, I do not think Nevers, lobbied to be one of the candidates for his current position; he was just nominated. Above all, he won the MMD, presidency. Meaning. he might not have been popular, but he had support. However, the support suddenly disappeared. Nobody, can lead or rather be a good leader without necessary support. He needs support . Without the necessary support, he can aswell be replaced..

  11. Daily Mail should not waste Tax Payers money writing stories lacking substance, we don’t need this rubbish of operating. Just this week they were on Paper apologizing to HEMCS for some printed news concerning Gay nonsense wen he was in opposition. These papers are funded by our Tax hence the need for them to be factual and such Journalist/ authors of Stories lacking substance should fired as they are a liability to the organization.

  14. Dr Nevers Mumba is a very perculiar Leader. He fits in very well in the David and Joseph stories in the Bible.Men or Women of destiny always have their destinies fought.I just encourage Dr Mumba not to dispair but soldier on,because the battle is the Lord’s.Many are the afflications of the righteous, but God delivers from them all.Be strong Dr Mumba-Daniel 11;32

  15. Have you noted the diference in quality of press statements between RB and MCS’s offices? Those from MCS are like newsstories. The Chap who writes them needs to go back to the classroom.
