SuperSport justifies ZPL purse money

Share

Sports channel SuperSport has justified the huge disparity in the money it pays South African Premier Soccer League clubs compared to what is paid to Zambian clubs.

SuperSport Executive Producer for Africa Max Tshunungwa said the PSL was more lucrative compared to the FAZ Super Division.

South African teams are said to be getting US $2.1 million each per season from the TV rights deal while Zambian teams walk away with US$20,000 in a season.

“You can’t compare apples with apples, because you need to take into account the different economic climates in the two countries,” Tshunungwa said.

“If you look at South Africa you have about 16 sponsors involved in the league that’s why you find that SuperSport paid the amount of money paid for that league because of commercial value,” he added.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwean Premier Soccer League teams are now getting US$5,000 more than Zambian clubs from the SuperSport TV rights deal.

  1. The economic activity of South Africa is probably 50 times bigger than Zambia. Gauteng Province alone has a bigger economy than Zambia and Malawi combined. The Provinces prides itself of Africa and Middle East’s biggest Auto mobile industry, large gold and diamond markets and so on.

Its against that backdrop that the South Africa soccer league is the richest on the continent and the 7th richest in the World. Forget about their standards which I think Zambia is very much ahead, but they are backed by Africa’s biggest economy and one of the World’s fastest growing economy, and that’s the point Super Sport is advancing. Its a valid point folks.

    • Spot on….. its typical Zambian fans they WAKE UP when their funds have already been eaten and shared by their so called demigods and his yes men. $20K is a joke not even a groundsman at an EPL club like Southampton would accept that….but because its converted in our currency docile fans think its big money.

  2. Instead of complaining, we shud be thankful that our players are getting the international
    Coverage they are getting.

  3. First upgrade your standards before asking for money. Look at the standard of games televised by ZNBC, the quality would be rejected outright even on a pirate TV station in europe. Zambian football has the potential to be even more lucrative than South Africa because of the talent pull and passion the Zambian people have towards the game. If we can’t even name a stadium, imagine trying to run lucrative leagues?

  4. Despite the huge difference in economies , US20 000 is still peanuts. 50 x 20 000 is 1000 000 so at least US500 000 would make sense as that would reduce the Zambian economy to 100 times less than that of South Africa. I was equally shocked to see Barclays giving a club K200 000 prize money. This is I am very certain less than their GMS salary. How can we blame people for being corrupt when we show them this kind of attitude? I am sure Multi choice is making more money in Zambia than they are making in Zimbabwe and in Kwazulu Natal.

  5. zedians should stop paying multi choice just watch amateurish skilless english premier league. This primitivity by zambians of supporting epl should stop. All this noise of arsernaaaal, manuuuuuu should stop. Multichoice makes a kill in zambia only, why?…. Primitivity pa zambia.

  6. How do you expect a reasonable deal when you have incompetent self serving corrupt empty suits at Football House who can’t even maintain uninterrupted football schedule.
    Wake up people!!

  7. $2.1 to $20,000 whoa! We need some academically qualified personal @ FAZ. DSTV subscription in Zambia is about a $100 per month compared to SAs $60

  8. First of FAZ needs to allow the premier league teams to manage their own league. Zambia is the only country where FAZ runs the premier league. The PSL and the EPL, La Liga for example are run independently thus able to improve standards, negiotiate rights etc

  9. @Zedman

Spot on….the problem is that FAZ has this presumption that they would lose control BUT in essence they will gain more monetarily and be self sufficient in the progress. Football is a big money business and you need the right calibre of people to be in charge of the business end of it NOT Grade 12 former footballers let these be in-charge with policy and disciplinary issues of the game.
The only reason SS is paying us peanuts is because they (Kalu and his “yes men”) can not package a deal and are too greedy only interested in brown envelopes….its no wonder most of these deals are a secret.
People need to wake up and stop hero worshipping!!
