THE Bemba Traditional Council
THE Bemba Traditional Council

The Bemba Traditional Council has appointed and installed Henry Kanyanta Sosala as Paramount Chief Chitimukulu of the Bemba speaking people.

The council met today where a unanimous decision was made to install Mr Sosala as the 38th Chitimukulu out a group of several other possible candidates.

This follows after the traditional councillors held a closed door meeting in Mungwi District where Mr Sosala was picked as the next Chitimukulu.

Mr Sosala ascends to the throne after a one-year long mourning vigil and eventual burial of his predecessor Ackson Mwango.

His appointment however, follows Government’s withdrawal of Mr Sosala as Senior Chief Mwamba of the Bemba-speaking people of Kasama over confusion surrounding his installation.

Government had said it was not its intention to interfere in chiefs’ succession processes but that it would equally not stand idle and watch “deliberately” created confusion take root in the management of chiefs and traditional affairs.

The Bashilubemba however, had asked Government to allow the council to sort the issue insisting it still considered Mr Sosala as a chief.

After today’s meeting, one of the council members said that all that remained now was the public installation ceremony as the instruments of power had already been handed over.

    • bola yavuta! who is who?? president or chitimuluku??

Please Bembas with good unbiased reasoning, please educated us! educate us on umuchishi wa mfumu!!! who is wrong here, the presdo or ba shilubemba??

    • No Cindy its not ulubili…am just trying to undersand bemba traditions from aba bemba nkonko… not street bembas from copperbelt

    • @ Ndobo: This is will be worst month for Sata.
Sosala is back?? Did GBM & Ba Luo lie to Sata that Bembas have sided with him? Sata even boasted by telling Chief Jumbe that he will fire him like Sosala.
      This is Armageddon!!!
I can’t wait to see how Sata will introduce Para-mount Chief Sosala to people, like he did to Para-mount Chief Mpezeni.

    • To me this is where I come from. No explanations needed. I need that to remain sacrosanct.
Regardless of where I wander on this planet, ndi mubemba nkonko. The Presidential office is a job and has nothing to do with my identity.

    • The PF will appeal to the courts to nullify the installation of the Paramount Chief! That is all I have ever heard.

    • PRESIDENT Michael Sata has with immediate effect withdrawn the recognition order of Senior Chief Shimumbi of the Bemba-speaking people of Northern Province.
This is contained in a Statutory Instrument of 2013 addressed to Bartholomew Lukaki who was chief Shimumbi.
The SI was signed by President Sata on June 25, 2013.
Some residents of Senior Chief Shimumbi area have welcomed the revocation, saying it was long overdue.
Lukaki was in 2008 chased from the palace by angry subjects who claimed he was wrongly appointed Senior Chief Shimumbi by late Paramount Chief Chitimukulu and subsequently gazetted by former president Rupiah Banda in 2008.
After he was chased, Lukaki stayed at Chulungoma council guest house for nearly three months and later left for Mufushi village where he is staying.

    • Wasn’t Ukwa boosting to Chief Jumbe only last week.

Seems as though everything is failing in Ukwa’s face now. Anyway have decided not to take anything Ukwa says seriously.

    • I don’t think it is about chiefs relevance on this one. That is not the question. The issue here is about freedom and independent judgement exhibited by the chief in defiance of the all power King Cobra Michael Sata. This is what has made everybody stand up in awe and applaud for we know that just recently Sosala’s fate at the hands of the mighty King Cobra was used to threaten Chief Jumbe. So we await reaction from the King Cobra who thought had struck Sosala dead. This is what makes this story interesting my friend.

    • Ala bane mule nasha ubupuba! Ba Ola! Bushe tamwakaleke umungulu? I can see, such kind of folly is inborn! Nothing changes my dear, this society accepts even people like you!people that have same brain capacity as***** ala ole spare me for today I don’t feel like talking otherwise you’d have felt them,

    • Why cant you, Ola, shut your smelly mouth up if you have nothing to say? You just open it up trying to show us how stu.pid you are – you such a dull chap fella…and you know it!! Next time please keep both your mouth and ar.se closed!

    • why don’t you say the same about the royal family whose only job as far as i can see is to wave at jobless benefits scroungers along the streets?

    • @Saulosi, I have to give you credit for your positive comment. The moment I saw your name I expected to read another cadre rhetoric.

    • iwe soulosi… today is friday i dont mind buying you a six pack of your choice beer or your bottle of fimofimo whisky… Great comment for the first time, if it was those days at primary school that comment would have seen you move from group 3 to group 1…big ups!!!!

    • @Saulosi, I hope you see from the many accolades you’ve received how objectivity pays. You don’t always have to agree with things but you should strive to be objective. Congrats. Would have loved to come to Ndobo’s party but I won’t gatecrash.

    • @Saulosi, I just hope your hero Satire will humble himself like you just did. Congratulations. It will be a catastrophic weekend at state house.

  1. it’s good to note that the govt okayed the installation despite the previous confusions that lead to evental removal of Sosala. It is good to make peace that’s how it aught to be. Sure endita ee!

    • @mwanamfumu.the govt didnt okey this.i say so because chief jumbe was few days ago warned by sata that if not careful he would go sosala way.

    • @dudlove, we know that is just a figure of speech. Even William Banda used to say the same about UNIP. Don’t say things that you do not mean. Just say you won’t listen to any criticism of PF and it will be understood. But don’t claim that you can die for PF. There is no room for self proclaimed martyrs in Heaven.

  2. those guys ..are so scary there..kekekekekekeee..form the Ituri forest..?lol..well done guys for electing Sosala..viva

  3. sata is losing ball possession in all areas so fast.he needs to get advice from former barcelona coach pep guardiola(RB).not tubena homo mmembe.

  4. And you shall all thank the Lord that you have regal lineages, so royal they are unmoved by rantings of people who do not know what ascendance is all about; if he’s unsuitable they’d have picked someone else…was GBM ermissary with a kama-apology 😉
Thumbs up! Good traditions must be upheld, these are essential parts of our africanness – bravo !

  5. The bembas are a tough nut to crack.even the mighty KK failed to subdue them. The colonialist recognised the toughness of the the Bemba tribe as opposed to other tribes .

    • Am proud to be Bemba. Such nerve! In zambia all major changes are spearheaded by a bemba or bemba related; Independence, Democracy, Regime change by PF, Africa cup. This is good mwe!

    • Hardly surprising comment from someone who thinks he’s Italian. Shame!

  6. Well done our Bemba brothers! You have defied Sata who thinks he can meddle with our traditional chiefs. One behalf of us Tongas we applaud you.Let the message be clear there a laws of the land that must be followed even by those who are elected to SERVE us in office.Today I’m buying beers for whichever Bemba I meet.

  7. Ola oh whatever you call yourself, by you trying to look civilised you’ve actually proved your folly, only an ***** would ask such a question, why should we get rid of chiefs! Boss if really you have nothing to post better you remain silent than bringing out your levels of stupidity, ubu puba fye bweka bweka, go everywhere in the world every country embraces its culture and why should we get rid! ati ‘modern world’ kwati chi puba!

  8. The republican president has no business meddling in traditional affairs, unless it is a situation where conflict may arise without external intervention. As a Bemba himself (if he is one) then he has the rights as any other subject. President is republican custodian, representative of the colonial state. Chief is custodian of the people in his jurisdiction. I am not a Bemba, but if this were happening in my tribal homeland I would not accept it. The custodians of tradition should be allowed to do their calling.

  9. I hope chiefs in Eastern Province could also stand up against Sata and bring back Chief Kalindawalo to his throne. But with chiefs like Mpezeni, i don’t see that happening.

  10. He was removed as Chief Mwamba, but if he is the one who was supposed to ascend to Chitimukulu then other procedures have been followed and shall be followed. Remember that the rituals for Chief Mwamba and Chief Chitimukulu are different. Chief Mwamba and Chitimukulu are two different thrones of which the highest is Chitimukulu. Mwamba and Chitimukulu are brothers.

  11. Can someone educate me on the purpose of having chiefs, what there role in society is, duties they perform and for what relevance they are? Sincerely speaking i have no idea, i just somehow get comfortable screaming chief whatever, Barotse whatever, in actual sense i have no idea why they exist in this century, dont get confused with my questions, am talking about present day.

    • Chiefs are the true custodians of the land we call Zambia, Malawi etc today. They are the true founders of our nations. They are the ones who hold the land on behalf of all the people just like the queen of England holds the land on behalf of the people of Britain. They are the genesis of the African governance system. Unfortunately, colonialism and later “independence” sidelined chieftainship resulting in all the political confusion that Africa experiences today. The solution is to have a chief as the head of state, in-charge of the army and the police. Our chiefs can rotate this position. We the citizens can then elect politicians to run government. With a chief at the helm we don’t even need a written constitution.

    • Sunrise thankx for the insight, i think it is important to explain some of these things, especially nowadays when they seem to pop up alot in the news. Someone should come up with a corner where we can be getting “unrelated” news. Some of us have alot of questions and ideas which would benefit everyone.
@ Ndobo, am not suggesting that, History is very important would like to understand everything, they have been brought back to “life” in the current regime thats why i want to know what there use in todays life is.

  12. you will never see development akolwe imwe in northen province.Sata show them what it takes to be a president for these goons to oppose you! tell them you are watching them in there bedrooms day and night.

  13. Abaume bene bene, babomba, chawama chasokona ku luBemba. Tinpot dictators must never be given space to exercise their repulsive tendencies. UluBemba government has been in existence for over 5 centuries. They know exactly what they are doing, please don’t interfere in traditional affairs. Focus on Zambia’s development. Don’t abdicate this heavy responsibility by meddling and poking unwanted noses into what does not concern you. I think lelo nalanwa ubwa kwa ntambo to celebrate this courageous decision by bashi luBemba. Kudos!

  14. Iam amazed at the courage of our brothers – the BEMBAS. They are a great tribe. They did exactly what Sata said NO to. I remember Chief Jumbe appologizing profusely, begging for mercy from the mighty Sata. What a difference between Chief Jumbe, the Soli Chief and Chief Mpezeni! Not even the the so called Litunga who the lozis call king has such courage!!

    • Yes, courage. But also, its because Chiefs in Northern part of Zambia are better placed to take a bold move like this one because President Sata will fail to play the tribal card in retaliation when he comes back. It’s like a chess game.

  15. examination question? who was the first Zambian chief dethroned and inaugurated by fellow tribesmen as senior chief?

  16. Cindy, where do you hail from? I bet you are a foreigner. Get back to the roots and understand traditions. What you are telling us about the relevance of the chiefs is as good as asking about the relevance of the monarch in the United Kingdom and other monarchies. Think dear. Maybe you are a martian. A person from Mars,

    • You got me wrong dear, am talking about what they do every day, what contribution they make politically and economically, i dont know maybe wanting to know certain things get us see things differently, maybe i just want to be comfortable with every faction that benefits from tax payers money, apart from that i appreciate the traditions.

  17. I have Sosala, very lucky to inherit that blond of a woman , i mean bamuka mfwilwa banamwinelubemba. May be that is why Sata is jealous, he wanted o be dipping his finished tobacco spoiled dick into a beuty.

  18. Awe mwamupesha umu boys!!!!!! Just a week ago he was bragging to Chief Jumbe about the removal of Chanda Sosala and that he may face similar consequences. By the way, he has also withdrawn recognition of Senior Chief Shimumbi of the Bemba speaking people of Northern Province.

  19. ….the bembas have smeared amafi on Satan’s face telling him to east his shi.ts! Well done…I must look for a Bemba girl for tonite!

  20. Ba shilubemba, the have lifted Dora’s finger to the President HE MCS. I guess he will now slow down and begin respecting the people of Zambia. But there is one more point we need to harm in his head that should start respecting the constitution. Lets enumerate his failures in confrontations lately;
    -Chief Jumbe.
    -1-3 bye elections.
    – ECZ
    – Paramount Chief Chitimukulu.
    – resignation of Deputy Minister.
    – Fear of bye elections.

  21. E bola! Ala wat is happening pa Zed these days nizii. Sata wu the hail do u think u are? Efyobamba ukupwa my dear nififine u think no one can challenge u. We are ready for u. Congrats Bembas. Bembas 1 Sata 0

  22. Just to educate those who have been misinformed. Not everyone who hails from Mpika is Bisa. Mpika is partly Bemba and partly Bisa. The Bemba Chiefs are Chikwanda, Luchembe and Mpepo. These belong to Abena Ng’andu clan and some have become Paramount Chief Chiti Mukulu in the past. Also, Bisa and Bembas are sister tribes who migrated into Zambia from Congo as one Luba group under the leadership of Chiti and Nkole. Later Chiti split the group after a row between his sister Chilufya Mulenga and her cousin Chanda. One group remained in what is now Mpika and later named itself Bisa the other continued on its journey and later called itself Bemba. Several years later the Bemba group expanded into Mpika i.e. Chikwanda,Luchembe and Mpepo. Please do not be misled by those wishing to devide us.

    • Baane, stop living in the past. Theses chiefs simply divide us. they were useful then but not now. they were used by colonialist to divide and rule africans by making them collect tax for the musungu. I hate that institution and its irrelevant in todays Zambia. if I was Sata, I would not spend energy fighting Sosala but just ignore him to an extent of making him functionally impotent.

  23. I’m Bemba close the royal family paramount chief Kanyanta Manga Bwalya Chisupa. Historically there are alot of Bemba dethroning by the colonial masters how the Bemba ascendancy to the throne must be followed the same as rituals that bar the chiefs from staying in the late chief’s house. People may ask why Bemba they do not have proper palaces and this is a reason once the chief dies the incoming should not use the late ‘ house. Initially the move taken by the govt maybe seen as bad so far so good chief Shimumbi was a witch doctor with no royal connection but the late paramount chief appointed him coz helped the late to terminate senior chief Mwamba who was suppose to ascend to the highest throne of the Bemba . I wish paramount chief Kanyanta success and I will visit him.

    • What evidence “to terminate” do you have??? Ne lo muli ku ba sungu, YOU STILL BELIEVE IN WITCHCRAFT???? Is it GBM’s machinations that they have been trying to get a Chief MWAMBA?????? Tell PF to take their silly gymnastics to Lusaka & keep them there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  24. Parallel intelligence operating procedure is simple: Invite the so called new Chitimukulu to state house, give him some ‘tea’ to drink, wheel chair im out like his predecessor and a year later the opportunity is created for a BISA takeover.

  25. SATA 10 rest of the populace 0. My President mr. Michael Chilufya Sata is a political genius. By letting the people decide even when the state supported not Jumbe or Sosala he has shown maturity. I dislike most of the PF ministers and MPs, but Mr. Sata I like. The Western province now like him with the development he is bringing. President Kaseba is our leader in waiting. Prayers for our president a true patriot :). Women are IGs of police and army commanders. ECZ is independent, this is all the great Michael Sata’s politics 101.

    • tuume shilu, atucusha muno….
      hey, where is Patrick kaoma…

I am leaning a lot from this conversation. Thanks Bashi Lubemba.
I am only disappointed at the graduation gown you are forced to wear as leaders. Where is out traditional Isaba tied on the shoulder? It surely has more authority than these gowns.

    • You guys are ace! Cine mwalikwata insoselo! Loving this!

      Mwansa leto’ bwembya, tuume ishilu
      Tume mwansa kabinga tume ishilu.
      tuume shilu, atucusha muno….

  26. A straight slap in the face for Sata. Thought someone blogged about how PF was popular in Bembaland.

Chanda Sosala is the MwineLubemba…. Chase PF out of Bembaland baba.

  27. An updated lineage of Chitimukulus is coming up soon. In Lubaland also called Kola, a powerful empire existed. The king Mukulumpe was so powerful. His wife was Mumbi Mukasa. She had big ears like an elephant. She was also believed to have fallen into the kingdom from the skies. Mukulumpe and Mumbi Mukasa uwamatwi ngensofu had these children: Katongo, Nkole, Chiti and Chilufya Mulenga the only girl. The highhandedness with which Mukulumpe treated his children led them to rebel. Katongo the eldest was blinded by his father who later plotted to kill his other two sons Nkole and Chiti. Katongo found a way to save his brothers by warning them through druming umondo while singing thus: Nkole wamapembwe, Nkole wamapembwe umfwo mulandu, Chiti Chiti camulaso munwe mulinso camulengo mono kupompa.

  28. Congratverulates your royal highness Chanda Sosala; government has no right but to accept the will of the people!

  29. The President must respect all the Chieftains as the Presidency must be respected by all people regardless of who is in the Office.

The President is now duty bound to go to the new Chitimukulu to pay respect.

  30. We don’t need him to come & spoil the installation of our Paramount Chief – let him do what he does best – hide in State House – FOR HE IS VERY RIGHT – HE KNOWS HIS DAYS ARE NUMBERED IN THAT PROPERTY – So the most he can eke out behind it’s walls, the better for him!!!!!!! Chimbokael’s walls wont be so good looking – What with the Abrogation of OUR CONSTITUTION BY KEEPING A CJ who not only has been REJECTED by Parly, BUT IS TOO OLD TO THINK STRAIGHT – hence poor rulings coming out of the Supreme Court of the land!!!! She can’t act for more than six months – hey, give the guy a break, the constitution was never written in Bemba!!!

  31. Bashi Lubemba have SPOKEN!!! Lets now see who the last man standing will be!!
2016 is just round the corner!!! Sata will have to GO & KNEEL BEFORE THIS GUY IF HE HAS ANY HOPE OF PF GOING ANYWHERE!!!!!!!

  32. A short while back, we heard this:

“Mr Sosala was however, quoted on Radio Mano saying the position of Senior Chief Mwamba had not made him royal. Speaking in his native ichiBemba, Mr Sosala said: “Ine nafyelwe imfumu kabili nkafwa imfumu.

Tekweba ukuti nasangwike imfumu elo naile pali bu Mwamba. Nafyalwa ku bafyala imfumu.”

When translated Mr Sosala said he was born a royal and would die a royal as his mother was a queen mother who gave birth to chiefs.”

This man is cleverer than our presido – he remained humble before being proclaimed Shi – lubemba, it was only a matter of time for him, which has now come!!

  33. Kudos!

  34. If this story is true then it is proud day for all Zambians. Politicians need to realise that they are our servants, not our masters. Chitimukulu, Mpezeni, etc. have been around for centuries. A jumped up tinpot dictator with a dodgy heart must not be allowed to tear up our traditional institutions!

  35. All these issues are setting in motion the unfortunate situation of a state of doldrums and the unfortunate decline in power, authority and influence of the affected tribal entity and its leadership.

  36. I feel like becoming Bemba!!! The chiefs are true leaders. Shame to Mpezeni though he’s my chief, he must learn from these men. Chiefs have made the nation proud, we a reason to believe in the tradition once again. The Chief Justice with all her learning, she must also learn from these simple but galant men not to be used by politicians.

  37. Let me add my voice. Great stuff bashi Lubemba. This is the way to go!!!!! I dont like politicians interfering in traditional matters.

  38. On a lighter note this should now be the end of bemba’s pretending other people give their children ‘chipata’ names.

If your own Chitimukulu is ‘SOSALA’ start removing the logs from your eyes before pointing at others, ok!

  39. With all due respect……I believe the appointment announcement was supposed to wait until burial, that was why grz insisted on the removal even though he is the rightful heir.

    • If makes you happier, tell me what tribe you are and I’ll praise that too.

    • They are very real. Here are some more for our new King of Bembaland

      Taaa!
      We Mwine Lubemba Kanabesa.
We ulisha umunsoli, utoni twalumba kabumba.
      We utesula, insofu yasalyuta.
      Weuifwena kulukobo kukaboyo.
      Weuteela isolo ku nkopyo.
Weo ingaala yabufumu ipikwilwa itenta kukubeka
      Taaa!
      Kalebalika we Mwine Lubemba.

      Taaa! Taaa!

    • @chikwangwa Liswaniso
Isolo! Hahaahaha hahah! Ba Kanabesa bateya isolo nenkopyo! Love, love this! I feel so starved of amalumbo. Ati “Weuteela isolo ku nkopyo.”

Also gotta comment on your name – truly one Zambia one nation. Peace bro!

(Feel free to send more of amalumbo, any time. You have a fan)

  40. Chiefs in Northern part of Zambia are better placed to take a bold move like this one on one of their ‘subjects’ because President Sata will fail to play the tribal card in retaliation when he comes back. It’s like a chess game. They have clipped Sata’s wings a bit. Well done. I wont’ be surprised if Sata u-turns and insists he has always supported the New Chitimukulu, its the opposition who have been telling lies.
