Opposition National Revolution Party (NRP) president Cosmo Mumba has castigated the opposition for allegedly shunning the 20th UNWTO summit hosted by Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Dr. Mumba says it was unfortunate that opposition UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema, MMD leader Dr. Nevers Mumba, NAREP leader Elias Chipimo and FDD’s Edith Nawakwi were among the notable opposition leaders who decided to stay away from the summit.
He said this action by the opposition leaders to shun the important international event merely showed that they cannot be entrusted to govern Zambia.
Dr. Mumba claims that he was invited by Government to attend the GA and he has turned up for the Conference that has attracted 147 countries, 750 delegates, 900 participants and 49 ministers.
ZANIS reports that Dr. Mumba said this in an interview in Livingstone, today.
“Government invited me to attend the Conference and l am attending but where are the likes of Mr. Hichilema, Dr. Mumba, Mr. Chipimo and Ms. Nawakwi. They are not here therefore l regard them useless and their behaviour is uncalled for,” he said.
The NRP leader observed that the quartet have got a tendency of not attending national functions such as the Independence day, African Freedom Day, Youth Day, Women’s Day among others.
Dr. Mumba said the role of the opposition was not only to give checks and balances to the government of the day but to support government in its policies and programs aimed at improving the livelihood of the people in the nation.
He said forums such as the UNWTO were unifying and promotes unite and wealthy among the people.
He advised the four leaders against politicking unnecessarily because Conferences such as this one were above partisan politics because they would bear fruits in the long run after the Conference.
There was no immediate comment from the four opposition party leaders on the matter by press time as their mobile phones went un-answered.
Zambia and Zimbabwe are jointly co-hosting this year’s prestigious 20th Session of the UNWTO General Conference which started on 24th-29th August, in the two resort towns of Livingstone and Victoria Falls.

This story is seriously disjointed. Who was talking against who? The writer seems to be interchanging the names of the accuser and the accused persons in the story leaving a reader baffled.
I can get the gist of the story but the characters in the story are just being interchanged willy nilly such that the story ends up making no sense.
