A suspected wizard in Siavonga district has been stoned to death by an instant justice mob.
District Commissioner (DC) Brave Mweetwa and sources within the police confirmed the development in an interview with ZANIS.
The deceased has been identified as Leonard Halunyona 42 of Moonga village in Chief Sinadambwe’s area.
Sources said that Mr. Halunyona was murdered last Friday by a mob after he was accused of being a wizard.
Meanwhile Mr. Mweetwa has condemned the action taken by the mob of villagers.
“What I know is that the man was killed by a mob. The community rose against this man on suspicion that he was the one troubling the villagers on witchcraft activities.
Mr. Mweetwa said the villagers also wanted to burn his body, but the police arrived in time to stop the act and stabilised the situation.
He said government will not condone acts of people killing one another and will not allow people to take the law into their own hands.
‘’ I condemn the people for taking the law into their hands and as government we will not tolerate this. It’s not normal in a society to start killing each other.’’ he said.
And A 70-year- old Reverend of a named Church has been shoot dead in Nakonde District of Muchinga Province on suspicion of practicing witch craft.
William Chabateni of Kasichila Village in Mwenzo of Chieftainess Waitwika’s area was shot dead by unknown people last night outside his house.
Muchinga police Commissioner Remmy Kajoba confirmed the incident to the Zambia New and Information Services (ZANIS) in Chinsali today.
Mr. Kajoba said the deceased sustained gunshot wounds in the chest and the right eye and that a shot gun is suspected to have been used.
The Police Commissioner said the incident happened last night around 19:30hrs at his house in Kasichila Village.
He said a team of police officers visited the scene of crime while the body of the deceased is currently lying at Nakonde District Community Hospital awaiting postmortem.
Mr. Kajoba said police in Nakonde are investigating the matter.
