Caritas will decampaign the new constitution if it is not adopted via referendum

Caritas Zambia National Coordinator Sam Mulafulafu has warned that his organisation will decampaign the new republican constitution if it not adopted using the referendum.

Mr Mulafulafu said the adoption of the new constitution via a referendum is a non-negotiable issue.

He said Caritas will go flat out using his structures countrywide and ensure that the new constitution is rejected if it is not adopted via a referendum.

Mr Mulafulafu the new constitution must pass the legitimate test by having it pass through a referendum.

“We have to be clear to this government that we will not allow this constitution making process to be hijacked by narrow interests. We want Zambians to be allowed to endorse this document via a referendum,” Mr Mulafulafu said.

“We will not shy away from launching countrywide campaigns against the final document if the executive wants to use other means of adopting the new constitution and our people will be sensitized on why they should reject it.”

He said Zambia has already spent a lot of public money in supporting various processes in the past to enact a new republican constitution.

Mr Mulafulafu said the PF government must be magnanimous and allow the referendum to be held in the enactment of the new constitution.
