UNITED Party for National Development (UPND) president Hakainde Hichilema yesterday cast a cloud of doubt on the possibility of former Zambezi West member of Parliament (MP) Charles Kakoma re-contesting the seat.

Mr Hichilema, however, expressed confidence that UPND would win the Zambezi West parliamentary by-election set for January 10, 2014 regardless of whether it will adopt Mr Kakoma or another candidate.

He said in an interview in Solwezi that although his party does not support “unnecessary” by-elections, it will participate in the poll.

“We don’t want these by-elections but since it was already created, we shall go ahead to field our candidate and we shall sit to choose our candidate but we are yet to decide who,” Mr Hichilema said.

He expressed concern about the manner in which the Supreme Court nullified Mr Kakoma’s seat.

Mr Hichilema said Mr Kakoma genuinely won the elections and that he did not engage in electoral malpractices.

He said the UPND would retain the Zambezi West parliamentary seat because people in the area still have no access to jobs, clean drinking water and electricity.

Mr Hichilema urged the people of Zambezi West to emulate their Solwezi East counterparts by voting for a UPND candidate.

The Electoral Commission of Zambia has set January 10, 2014 as the date for the Solwezi West parliamentary by-election.

The seat fell vacant after the Supreme Court nullified the election of Mr Kakoma as Zambezi West MP in the 2011 elections.

  1. A precedent that has been set about baring all candidates suspected of electoral malpractice from contesting elections will ultimately create a level playing field and curb corruption.

we reached a point where corruption was seen as normal part of everyday life.

    • Its bizarre for this self-centered, greedy politician called HH to accept electoral malpractice and corruption which every one saw in Zambezi west during 2011 general elections as normal.

  2. @Gen
Its unreasonable for people like you to treat Zambians like kids. The most corrupt, not to mention violent ones are PFs. Go to UTH now you will find PFs injured by fellow PFs and later on ask Kabimba, he will tell you that, PFs, are currupt…!

  3. Please don’t vote for someone’s party that cant give you even one cabinet minister because they think the whole northwestern province has brainless people. Remember Sata said he balances brains not tribes.

    • HH tell us your agenda up to now there is nothing your party has achieved other than vomiting Insults PF has a slogan more money in our pockets and don’t kubeba

    • During the struggle if you were there, and even after independence the stronghold of the opposition (ANC- Mayibuye) were Southern and North Western provinces as well as Mufulira on the Copperbelt. It is not a new culture Mr. UPND president for you to win in these two provinces whenever and however, although Mufulira is now a no go area for the opposition, so it is expected of your party to win in Zambezi, but one day when people will start valueing development above politicking they will learn to give the mandate to govern only to those who deserve it at a given time.

  4. For 15 years Kakoma has done nothing for Zambezi west and people here are saying its an opportunity to try PF as well.Kakoma has lamentably failed and should just try something else in life.He is not a Chief for him to continue until he dies.

    • Keep on dreaming! Sata and PF have no heart for North-Western Province, Southern Province and Barotseland. Zambezi West will be better off with a UPND or MMD member of parliament than voting for the uncaring PF. Remember that Sata is a disciple of KK. What did KK do for NWP during his 27-year rule? NOTHING! Sata is following in the foot steps of his political god – KK.

  5. BLUE BLOOD you are not telling the truth. Your people like Kebby Musokotwane and others were at the helm of UNIP with KK. What did they do for the NothWesterners and Westerners. Nothing.

But look at how they developed Southern Province. Rail line and Tarred road from Lusaka to livingstone. Infact southern province is by far one of the most developed provinces in terms of infrastructure. That is why they can afford to remain in a small group of opposition political party for a long time.

Do not use others for things you cannot do for them or as political ladders. You never fought for N/Westerners or Westerners when your people were influencial in UNIP. Alatase malabishiii

    • Kavuyi,

What truth do you want other than what I have said. Did Kaunda and UNIP develop NWP? The little development that you see now in that Province is due to Mwanawasa’s will to take development there. Clearly you have got your ideas mixed up. So according to you influential people, and not planning, supposed to take development to their provinces only? If that is the case why didn’t people like Mulemba, Kavindele, Bulawayo, Sondashi, Sakuhuka, Mbilishi, etc do it for NWP? And why didn’t people like Mundia, Masheke, Lisulo, the Wina brothers, Sipalo, etc do it for Western province? For your information, the railway line from livingstone to the Copperbelt has been there since the pre-independence era. I quess others will be able to tell who is telling ”malabishi” between you…

  6. It is sweet news that the PF kaponyas are killing each other.
Let us help to arm them so that they continue hacking each other like the rabid dogs that they are!

    • That is not a nice thing to say. Remember it is human lives you are talking about here. We should never wish one another death or injury even if they are our enemies. At the end of the day you are all Zambians.

  7. No chance for Kakoma this time around.15 wasted years and he still wants ? We the owners of Zambezi have the last word.UPND should try after 2016 no matter what form of corruption they use again.

  8. I am a Zambezi resident and we are praying that the Court stops him from contesting to deter other would be corrupt elements in future.HH dont waste your money i advise you.

  9. No doubt Sata is the man of the people now and beyond.Forgive us cos MMD cheated us that you will promote homosexuality and cut off NWP to Angola. You have proved to be man of action indeed.

  10. wait for another shock…..change is around the corner for zambezi west for obvious reasons, let kakoma revisit his manifesto.

  11. UP and DOWN no chance in Zambezi.Kakoma has failed to do even one road in the whole constituency.Politics is about providing quality services to the people and not just fattening one’s potbellied stomach…not at all.He has never brought even a single investor or donor despite the potential which the place has.
