The Zambia Association of Musicians has described the introduction of holograms in Zambia as a flop.

ZAM President Maiko Zulu explained that this is because piracy still remains rampant in the country despite the introduction of the hologram.

Mr. Zulu noted that the initiative is an archaic way of curbing piracy which cannot be depended on.

“I remember a lot of people in high offices in this country called me names when I spoke against this hologram project.
It is a waste of money because today’s technology makes it easy for people to share musical files and other artistic products,” Zulu said.

He added, “What we have seen now is that the levels of piracy have remained high if not gone up since the holograms came into force.”

He said that merely sticking the hologram on CDs and other materials cannot address the problem because of several modern ways of exchanging artistic materials such as songs.

Mr. Zulu added that it is for this reason that no significant progress has been registered in combating piracy since the introduction of holograms on the Zambian market.

  1. anything to do with cd’s will now be a thing of the past the tech is becoming obsolete and once you buy it need to put the contents somewhere where your contents will not be scratched and the best storage is in the cloud

    • But can someone please explain what this holocoast is, is it hologram, its too technical a word for a layman like me to understand, Journalists its your job to shade light on such words that sound like they have been quoted from ” The Mpombo dictionary”

    • Sad to see that we still want to be in the Past. How would you expect a country to move forward with such backward thinking? Be innovative stay in touch with modern technology. Well done Maiko?? You smart artist.

  2. Mr Zulu is right!. the moment the music videos reaches youtube, there is no control. Pipo can download and share files! But what is you proposal Mr Jah man?

    • but what is ur suggestion? Did u suggest any better method to combat piracy. don’t just complain without suggestions. I my view its u the musicians who seem not to know what u are doing. u have an association which should be working with law enforcement agencies to stop piracy. Do u pay your association just to seat and fatten their bellies? laughable….kekekekkekke.

  3. Always told people that this hologram crap wnt work! Its just a way for the government to monitor Music business and get something out of it. All its doing is adding extra costs to an industry that’s already suffering! Less money in our pockets!

  4. Weed is talking sense.. U’re right MR Videndeni .. The goverment is taking a knife to a gun fight.

It’s like Martial Arts VS SUICIDE BOMBERS.

    • @Gaddafi, but ndiwe ofunta! This is someone’s father/husband you are refering to at “weed, mbanje, ibange or fwaka ya chi Ngoni”

  5. There is a solution and thet solution is technology. We can build music sites for you and ensure that they are copy proof

  6. The problem with Micheal is being negative without solutions. But again what do you expect from a daga smoking person. Atleast the gorvernment is doing something while you are there doing nothing.

  7. Hologram is just one mitigating measure. How many musicians subscribe to this tech. St. Micheal has a tendency of eating with both hands, today is for it and when the sun goes down hes against it.

    • You have hammered the nail on the head. The chap seeks to be relevant even on issues that are straight forward. That is a problem of having an artistes without works on the market. Busy seeking attention. Isn’t he the chap who kept on fighting Mulenga Kapwepwe hoping to topple the lady. Ibange too much ba ex – convict

    • Ba Wana Be and Iiunga, so you mean to tell me you can’t read? Both of you need to take your feet out of your mouth. Maiko has made it clear he didnt support the Hologram fiasco form the get go. Eating with both hands where? in your house? muleikalafye if you got nothing to say.

  8. Dont just cricise someone because of airing his views. How many times have you aired your views on a given subject matter without giving solutions? Ok, the hologram is government initiative, now that others feel it cannot curb piracy, what are your thoughts?

  9. It seems this bastart has a problem. His friends, i mean artistes seem to appreciate the hologram because it gives them money even before there albums are sold out. I leanrt from ZAMCOPS that from the sale of holograms, artistes are entitled to some kind of money which production companies are paying to ZAMCOPS. Chaps like this convicted dagga smoker who don’t even have an album on the market will always discredit efforts aimed at bettering the welfare of artistes in Zambia because they have nothing to lose.

  10. The idea is brilliant but lacks enforcement- create an enforcement commission/agency such as ‘Piracy Enforcement Commission'(PEC) ; DEC, ZEMA and so forth are doing well as a result. Try it!

  11. This self confessed drug pusher is a muselela kwa kawa. Not long ago he was praising government initiatives. He was with Masebo in Livingstone during the UN conference, behaving like a chola boy now he wants to come out critical. Where were you when the idea of the styopeti hologram was being conceived? His wife makes far much sense. Opposite attract?

  12. Please people stop insulting me. I just want to steer debate because there has been alot of silence from the time the Ministry introduced the hologram. Some of you don’t even understand what the hologram is. Let’s contribute to the topic at hand without insulting me. Yes i am human, i have errored in the past but i deserve some respect. Can you imagine if we were all agreeing to whatever the state wants? it is important to have people like me around to give an alternative voice.

    • Well said and you are right- art industry need to survive and grow. With piracy it will be very difficult for the industry to thrive and grow

  13. our new tecnonlogy overrides the same hologram thing…..let ZICTA come in and assist being the main stakeholder in hgh-tech.jah man is absolutely rite.

  14. Piracy is everywhere, developed countries like America have not yet found a cure to this piracy syndrome, pipo the world over will always try by all means to reap were they did not sow. If you can’t beat them join them, if you can’t join them leave them…..

  15. It was a st()p1d idea but deliberate. Someone made money out of it- ask Malupenga. The prblem is that Zambians are easily duped that is why even a fraud like Sata can be President. Do you really think that this “solution” made any sense to even the people who hatched it. The crooks have made their money- and to them that was their goal and not to curb piracy…Smarten up Zambians…shyet

  16. Focus should be on the future of music. Currently ZRA needs to wake up as there are international companies paying themselves royalties abroad for music created by locals. Zamcops does not deal with synch licensing and both companies and broadcasters participate in denying huge revenue to the industry. Holograms may help identify products but it is the suppliers who must be caught over little street seller who would sell legal product if it was accessible to him. There is clearly a market but cinema culture is promoted to the elite, people like cheap access and converting those business centres which sell music on USB to licensed suppliers is a better solution long term. They know music pays more than photocopying and Internet access and are Zambia’s top suppliers of digital download.

  17. the solution is beyond his thinking capacity even with weed influence. let me tell you the solution…concentrate on live shows and tours, endorsements, clothing lines, Video royalties… if you want to make some buck. otherwise CD sales are imposible were pipo dont give a sh..it whether they have a cd o r not…

  18. Close your artistes websites for downloads and stop urging us to download.
some of us we don’t even like these imitation songs from America kalindula is laka and the real American music.Hologram ifinshi when you are the same people coming to ask us to promote your music, don’t you know that its also piracy??

  19. Piracy with technology advances is a reality that is present all over the globe and for now there is no win in sight for artistes and those who have copyright stakes. For this reason, artistes should find alternative ways of capitalising on their “fame”. For example, in other countries people no longer expect to make so much from cd sales, so they release songs for airplay and marketing, and then when there is enough noise around their music they go on a tour, and make money from the tours. O course you have to ensure that the recorded material can guarantee the needed attention, and that your marketing strategy is sound and research based.

  20. i think st maiko is right, the real issue with curbing piracy is not the authenticity of the product its the pricing, maybe a good suggestion as to curb piracy is for Government to try and reduce the actual price of the local music to make it more affordable for everyone…

  21. The biggest problem is that piracy starts with the musicians themselves. They distribute their products before its even ready for sale.In most cases,we would have sampled and listened to the all ulbums even before its ready for sale.It is through such acts by the artists themselves which reads to piracy. The first pirate project starts by the artists distributing his/her new product to the DJs who make coppies of the same for their friends and the trend continues in that line such that,by the time the ulbum is finally launched, the whole songs have been sampled in night clubs and radio stations and would have lost their monetary worth.

  22. I love Zedbeats and I’m always looking for a way to pay back the artists, but there doesn’t seem to be a way. I like the way Danny does it — give an awesome live performance and give out your authentic CD for free.

Otherwise, we’ll continue to get music without paying the artists.

  23. I recall warning that the hologram project was delayed technology that has come late and that artists source of income no longer lies in the number of albums sold but in the number and amount received from gate takings of shows and gigs they host. You remember the ‘box office?’

Again govt is caught looking for a solution in the wrong place. Its like this HIV Aids fight thing….conviencing ourselves that the solution to end the pandemic lies in awareness raising and yet the answer lies in research to find a cure where all resources currently going to awareness creation and the infamous male circumcision should be redirected!

    • You are damn right @ kapuli…….like being asked ‘have you lost something?’ and you say “No, I have not lost anything’ but every body starts helping you find it.
