UNIVERSITY of Zambia (UNZA) Chancellor Jacob Mwanza says he is pleased with the efforts that the university is making to enhancing quality education in an effort to improve the academic ranking of the university in the world.

According to the Webmetrics ranking of the world universities, UNZA is ranked number 66 in Africa and 3,970 in the world.

Dr Mwanza said during the 43rd graduation ceremony in Lusaka yesterday that he is delighted to learn that the university is already employing strategies to improve its ranking in the international community.

“This graduation is already a reflection of the efforts by the institution towards attaining the top position in university ranking in Africa and the world,” he said.

Dr Mwanza said that the theme “Enhancing International Ranking of the University of Zambia” will help the university double efforts to improve the rankings.

He called on Government to take a bigger interest in the institution and fund it fully to enable it attain the highest spot in university rankings.

Dr Mwanza, who is also former UNZA vice chancellor, urged the graduates to apply themselves in their endeavours and demonstrate that they are coming from the highest learning institution in the land.

“I know there are serious challenges that the institution is facing but I still believe that you have been adequately trained to face any situation wherever you will go. By applying yourselves fully and positively, you will be contributing toward a higher ranking of the institution, remember you are the salt of this country,” Dr Mwanza said.

And UNZA vice chancellor Stephen Simukanga said the university is determined to reverse the trends so that the rightful ranking is regained.

Professor Simukanga said the institution will promote and maintain excellence in teaching, learning, research and consultancy in order to boost the quality of education.

A total of 5,664 students graduated this year as compared to 3,470 who graduated last year.

Robert Kapasa Makasa and Paul Mushindo surely?, even if they are named after freedom fighters, they don’t sound sellable.

  4. Hey I must register for the PhD, so much academic opportunities coming up in zed with the construction of new Universities, or even the M.Sc in Eng i have is adequate.

  5. The point of departure is that the present UNZA ranking in the above aforesaid 2 categories is disapointing. Even though, I concur with the current UNZA vice- chancellor & principle that the institution needs a huge budget so as to elevate its ranking, I want to unpack my objections (hereafter, shortcomings). The university management needs to reduce the number of schools for each college. Furthermore, schools need to be merged with other schools because the contents of the modules taught in each school are duplicates of other modules in similar colleges/schools within the university itself. Therefore, no innovation or creativity. Moreover, the blotted staff needs to be reduced so that more funds can be channelled into research projects. Additionally, minimum qualifications of academics ne

    • From above: Minimum qualifications for the UNZA academia should raised to a PhD level and, a PhD holder must have obtained his/her qualification from one of the universities ranked in the top 400 universities in the world. The University of Zambia should offer attractive remuneration packages to its highly skilled lecturers for their quality services and sustained loyalty. Most of its lecturers must be encouraged to pursue post-doctoral studies so as to maintain high standards among research fellows at the above mentioned university. The university must encourage collaborations with top 100 universities in the world.

  6. I have been involved in tests and exams with some Unamu and capetown university students, capetown students are superior performers It shown in their analytics and there are quiet challenging but often equal

In my small encounter I have never come across a Zambian except three known friends one from Professional insurance, mines and from cabinet.
These universities participate in research challenges and you need to be sharp. I have often been challenged and sometimes get embarrassed being asked about the non rating of our universities colleges and certificates. Its time we upped the need and ensure the councils that be promote the image of the Zambian education.

  7. More than half of the worlds billionaires have no college education. And according to an IBM research, the amount of research information on the internet doubles every 11 hours! So if you got your masters or phd five years ago, your degree is obsolete. Well educated for the wrong time.
