The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has been commended for the stance it has taken on the matter in which President Michael Sata campaigned in Vubwi and Malambo constituencies before the due date of the commencement of the campaigns was officially announced.
The ECZ’s conflict management committee has advised that if the Head of State wants to hold political meetings in areas scheduled for elections, he must hold such meetings indoors as it is against the laws governing elections in the country to hold campaign meetings before the official date of an election has been officially announced.
Political activist Dante Saunders says such a bold step taken by the ECZ is welcome and should be commended.
Mr. Saunders however says in view of such breach of the electoral law as has been exhibited by the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) it is more reasons that justifies the need to give ECZ more powers to be expelling candidates that are found in breach of the electoral code of conduct during an election.
Mr. Saunders has told Qfm news in a telephone interview that such a situation where President Sata goes to campaign before the due dates of doing so at a time that he had also declared 7 days of national mourning for the late former South African president Nelson Mandela is also a disgrace to Zambia.
He says this is the further reason why the PF government cannot claim to be a government of laws because it has continued to allegedly break laws as President Sata did to campaign in Vubwi and Malambo ahead of legal time of doing so.
A president that can’t lead by example does not deserve a second term. We have gone backwards in terms of democracy and it’s all down to his poor governance. We can’t get rid of him but we can learn from such expiriences,come 2016 people should vote wisely
