Zambia seeks release of abducted villagers by Angolan security personnel

Share

Zambia Army Commander Paul Mihova says efforts are being made to secure the release of five Zambians who were recently abducted by Angolan security personnel from Shangombo district in western province.

Lieutenant General Mihova said this over the weekend when he paid a courtesy on Chavuma District Commissioner Lawrence Kayumba.

He said his office is working with the defence Chief of Angola to facilitate the release of the abducted Zambians.

Lt. Gen. Mihova said his office will embark on a project to sensitize people living in border towns on the need to know the boundaries to avoid straying into other countries.

He said some people go beyond the Zambian borders during fishing or when picking mushrooms without realizing that they have done so hence the need to sensitize them on the legal boundaries.

The Army Commander was on a working visit in the North western province to assess the security situation in border areas and how the troops are working with the traditional leadership.

He said it was pleasing to note that government leadership in various districts is looking after soldiers well by ensuring that they are comfortable.

Speaking earlier, Chavuma District Commissioner Lawrence Kayumba said the porous border in the west bank of the region was of great concern and needs to be addressed soon.

He also called on the Army Commander to ensure the soldiers in the district have reliable transport so that they man the borders effectively.

    • They just started happening when GBM left. Then borders are for immigration, Edgar Lungu also was moved by the confused Sata.
What a PF chaos, an army commander negotiating diplomatic release of Zambian citizens? Where is ministry of Foreign Affairs?

    • Please LT, with all the due respect, legally speaking ‘abduction’ is involves the removal of a person/s from her dwelling/s for the purpose/s of having sexual intercourse with or without her consent or marrying her. Furthermore, it is a double intension criminal offence. The above term should be used according to definitional requirements, which if met, constitutes the crime created by the legislation.

  1. Angola is just playing stupid as usual. Our borders are porous and not easy to pin point exactly where the boundaries are. Those are villagers who probably have relatives on other side of the border. This is an insult to Zambia.

  2. LT misreporting! The chaps were not abducted but rather arrested and detained for crossing into Angola without immigration clearance!
Learn to be sensitive and ethical when reporting on such matters, you brew unnecessary tensions!

    • Though you are screaming, you may actually have a point! I was wondering the circumstances of their abduction as to what led to it, how much Ransom is being asked and so on and so forth. The storry has strayed away in giving adquate information with regards the Heading. Just torn down abit, I presume you must be Angolan seeing how defensive you seem.

  3. Cindy and Precedence the Angolan army is just belligerent. They are always looking for a war to fight. We always stray into Tanzania Malawi and even Mozambique and these nations citizens do stray into Zambia.have you ever heard their armies abducting or arresting us? What harm can unarmed pedestrian villagers do to Angola? Zambians should really treasure our peace Angolans don’t.

    • Let me school you on how frontiers are set out.
Between two countries, there is what is called the “demilitarized zone” or commonly referred to as “no mans land”. once this land is traversed or crossed, the person enters the territory classified as another nation, and is therefore subject to their Laws. If Malawians, Tanzanians, Zambians etc stray into each others territory unlawfully and get away with it, then we should question the effectiveness of national security of these countries.

    • Iwe Precedence noone needs your schooling. In the first place you dont cross into a nation you cross into a state or country. Nation is about people. how does no mans land adress my argument above? The point iam making is that we cant be so militant given our artifical borders. Zambia and Tanzania for example are two countries that dont ask for passports from citizens crossing their borders. Thats is just being sensible and not applying stoopid laws inherited from our colonial masters for the sake of enforcing rules
