About 508, 000 people living with HIV and AIDS are currently accessing the Anti Retrial-viral Treatment (ART) countywide representing a 98% coverage.

Speaking during a media briefing in Lusaka today, Health Minister, Joseph Kasonde, said ARVs worthy K175 million were last year procured to ensure sustainable supply of the life saving drug.

Dr. Kasonde said that essential drugs worth over K150 million were procured and this greatly improved the availability of essential drugs in all the health facilities in the country.

He further added that about 2, 567 clients were last year screened for cervical cancer out of which 283 were tested positive.

Dr. Kasonde has also revealed that about 1736 trained health professionals were last year recruited and posted to health facilities throughout the country.

He further states that last year, 32 District Hospitals were under construction around the country out of which three are expected to be commissioned this year and these are Lumwana, Lufwanyama and Samfya District Hospitals.

  1. So much money and lullubaloo spent on the cervical cancer campaign and only 11% affected? Money and resources should be allocated wisely. We also ran out of ARV’s so I wouldn’t list that under successes. Many lives have been lost due to poor care being offered at hospitals and clinics due to lack of nurses,I shan’t mention no drugs because that is chronic.Doctors make bad managers ,consider hiring professional administrators…
ps Bring back Dr.Mwaba to health! Why should a doctor be in home affairs! That guy needs to be doing rounds not sitting behind a desk

    • he has failed to tell as what percentage was budgeted for pilferage of ARVs from GRZ health centres to chinese and private hospitals by health personel including himself. we know another kapoko has been born there & how much of that money have shared with micheal sata

    • Only 11%??? you got be ashamed of yourself Nurse Betty to think the 11% aren’t that important to spend a cent on. You need to thank God for keeping you and your immediate family are from this terrible disease as you seem not to have a faintest idea of the magnitude of devastation and pain it can leave in its wake.

  2. Was Dr Kasonde reading this statement on behalf of the minister of health Dr Kaseba who has of late gone quiet?

  3. I am very skeptical with these “blowing own trumpet” achievements. What do these results compare with in terms of targets? The cancer statistics are worthless and just makes us question the wisdom of making so much noise about a disease that isn’t even an issue going by the prevalence rate. Where did the first lady get the idea that Cancer is as bad if not worse than HIV/AIDS? You recruited 1736 trained health personnel against what target or required health manpower to address the core problem? You procured K150m worth of essential drugs compared to what? Has this resulted in the reduction of cases of clients/patients who are sent away to buy on drugs? Expecting three hospitals to be completed is not an achievement but an expected result which could go either way. Bwana Minister of…

  4. LUFWANYAMA,LUMWANA AND SAMFYA HOSPITALS WERE FINISHED DURING MMD MR MINISTER.
YOU HAVE FAILED TO MENTION THE ISSUE OF FUNDING AS NO GRANTS SINCE AUGUST FOR RUNNUNG HOSPITALS AND ALL THE VEHICLES WHICH WERE BOUGHT BY BRIAN CHITUWO HAVE GONE.
    NO FOCUS GOVERMENT.

  5. Why do we think health and medicine are synonymous? We’ve medicalised health in zambia no wonder EHTs who are supposed to be conducting preventive services are busy screening in clinics and we say its an achievement! We are spending for downstream interventions (curative) than preventive and with the way things are changing with lifestyle conditions such as cancers and obesity taking its toll I can assure you that we will need to work extra hard. Mixing environmentally generated conditions with lifestyle conditions is not health. Why do we let our doctors man offices even if there is one doctor in a district beats reason! Even if a doctor gets a higher salary he can still report to an administrator as most of them are pathetic in administration. If we continue with this medicalization of…
