Minister of Community Development, Mother and Child Health Joseph Katema has disclosed that Zambia was targeting to circumcise 80 per cent of HIV negative adult men t by 2015.

Dr. Katema said it was estimated that the provision of the voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) to eligible men has potential to avert 339, 000 new HIV infections by 2025.

He said government through the Ministry of Health launched the male circumcision programme in 2009 in order effort to combat the negative impact of HIV/AIDS.
He noted that currently, about 636,446 men have been circumcised with support from cooperating partners such as Jhpiego and Society for family Health (SFH) among others.
Dr. Katema said this during the JHPIEGO regional technical meeting on voluntary medical male circumcision which drew participants from 14 countries in the Southern and Eastern Africa region.

He commended JHPIEGO-Zambia for its innovative contributions and for being in the forefront of implementing the voluntary male medical circumcision programme in the country.

He has since urged stakeholders in the private sector to actively participate in the VMMC programme in order to scale up male circumcision which is believed to help in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

Dr. Katema has called on participants from different countries to effectively work together to tackle and defeat HIV/AIDS by developing strategies that will help contain the challenges in VMMC programme implementation.

And speaking earlier, JHPIEGO Zambia Country Director, Kwame Asiedu said the forum’s objective was to review the progress in the voluntary medical male circumcision programmes, discuss scientific and programmatic advances and make concrete plans to be incorporated into their programmes for 2014.

Mr. Asiedu said the forum will also review progress on the implementation of early infant male circumcision programmes and to discuss client safety in VMMC programmes.

  1. Circumcision my foot ! Away with your cheap propaganda.Stop brainwashing people. How can you circumcise a man over 35 years ? Where circumcision is traditional they circumcise babies and pre-puberty boys.I just find it weird how these western countries are busy pumping in money into this project while failing to do the same in their own home countries.Smh

    • If you did not know, this whole thing of male circumcission is just part of the bigger agenda in population control. This stage of the process (circumcission) is linked to the effeminization of the black male. it goes like this, circumcise the male, make him indifferent to sex due to the scars of circumcission. he loses all feel, next whether its the v.a.g.i.n.a or a.n.u.s,it will not matter to him. after that, there will be more gay black men. the population on the continent will go down. after sometime, there will be few brothers left to defend the continent. it will then be easy for the imperialists to come in for the final kill and take your living space (lebensraum) and your resources. dont always follow what the white man tell you. White supremacy = racism. BE YE WARNED!!!!!

    • Uyu wine Katema is he circumcised myself, and how man of those PF’s Useless MPs are circumcised? You bunch of idyotis. Your father didn’t circumcise you, and you accept your NGOs’ 20 yr old volunteers ukumifyononona.

    • Do not be misled by any consipiracy theories regarding circumcision. It is good both for sexual satisfaction and hygiene. You can even have it after 40 and still enjoy the benefits. Get circumcised and you will never be the same again. Ask me, I have been there!

    • @third eye – why dont you just have all your teeth removed. it is more hygienic without them. that way, you dont have to brush them in the morning. no chances of cavities. you can still feed on liquid stuff and you will still be healthy. it is irrational to think that we keep teeth in our mouth because we understand their necessity and we remove the foreskin on the penis because we don’t see or understand the necessity of it. The amount of knowledge we have, in terms of use,on certain body parts is not solid a criteria to determine which parts of our body we keep or remove for the betterment of our health or protection from diseases whose mode of transmission we have obtained empirically and cannot prove till now.

  2. HIV and cervical cancer are highest in countries with high circumcision rates in Africa where circumcision has been a traditional practice. Meanwhile, Europe, South America and Asia where less than 5% of men are circumcised has less HIV and cervical cancer rates. Penile dysfunction as a result of circumcision will definitely raise the demand for anal sex and other God forbidden practices. Katema i.d.iot!

    • This is such a primitive idea. Yeah, cut off a body part and it is cleaner. You miss the fact that there is bacteria all over us and we all NEED it. It is actually not cleaner to have a cut up p nis. It has now also been observed that natural boys have about the same bacteria as natural girls and that cut boys have different (invasive) bacteria (such as Staph A). A partial penis (cut up penis) is just missing parts, but as such it is invaded by not natural bacteria.

  3. Africans are being used as guinea pigs for sure. Circumcision has always been a cultural activity mostly done in North western but now it has been commercialised. And blindly our govt has accepted this with open has with no concrete statistics. Last time I checked Northern province were there is no circumcision had the least HIV infection rate. And why dont they talk about the negatives of this exercise? People need to be told about the negatives too so the can make informed choices. Imagine what will happen when later its discovered that the skin God put there actually is for a very important reason (ie cancer prevention). Then all circumcised men will start demanding to have their skins back!

  4. Am not sure why the research has only been one sided. in as much as i think circumcision has iits benefits, the other side needs to be debated. becuase the researches have not been so explanatory as to why Europe which has a low circumcision rate has a low HIV infection rate compared to USA… i think this is guine pig style and it need to be approached with caution. I dont believe in free things, ther is always a catch.

  5. I wonder why Joseph couldn’t start championing for the program to start with women since they have more skin folds on their genitalia than men and cervical cancer is a woman’s problem – men don’t have cervix’s and how do you expect a married man to carry cervical cancer virus??? Are you circumcised Joseph? Don’t you know the use of soap and water? A bath everyday is enough for your hygienic needs. Wake up don’t just follow these things blindly!!

  6. Ifyabupuba mu Zambia.so long as u’re given a car then caring about people is useless.People should be very careful with Circumcision otherwise Zambia will be wiped out in the next 50 years.White people want to kill us through hospital circumcision.I won’t do it .I clean myself well.
Countries with more circumcised men have high HIV/AIDS. Therefore, people don’t be cheated by these poor ministers who like money.

  7. EU/US data shows cut men get HIV and STDS at a higher rate — natural (intact) EU has much lower HIV and STD rate than cut US. All of this real data indicates that the presence or absence of foreskin has nothing to do with HIV infection, and behavior and safe sex practices have everything to do with it.

A study in the International Journal of Men’s Health noted that circumcised men have a 4.5 times greater chance of suffering from erectile dysfunction. than natural men. Other studies have previously observed that circumcision’s damage results in worsened erectile functioning, inability to maintain an erection, and reducing the glans sensitivity, including an overall penis sensitivity reduction by 75%. There are other studies as well..

The knowledge of the this WOUNDING affecting…

  8. Circumcision has not been proven to significantly reduce the transmission rates of HIV. It may have some benefits, but within the whole package of HIV prevention strategies, it does not play any more ‘miraculous’ intervention than other methods. In short, it should not be treated as a panacea – there are so many other factors that exacerbate HIV infections, which need to be tackled. This whole fanfare also has the danger of sending the wrong message or impression – for example, it may give the false confidence that if one is circumcised, they may engage in unprotected sex.

  9. No wonder zambia is dirty and Zambians see nothing wrong about it, look at the filth in Lusaka, simply because some Zambians think that cleanliness is foreign. Go and get circumcised and be clean and have proper brain driven sex, not sensations like a dog. Circumcision is not from donors, it is as old as the bible. Read your bible if can’t believe anyone. Sex is not sensation and you look for a lady to relieve yourself, it’s about love and it originates in the brain, not your Penis. Wake up you doubting Tomases.

    • If sex “originates in the brain, not your Penis” as Sydney Museleka says, then it will be just as good if you cut off the whole penis, no? You go first.

In 10 out of 18 countries for which USAID has figures, more of the CIRCUMCISED men have HIV than the non-circumcised, so how can cutting off (the best) part of the genitals do any good?
