on the Kitwe-Ndola Road.

Twelve people were confirmed dead while many others sustained serious injuries in a Road Traffic Accident involving a Rosa Minibus and a truck and trailer along the Kitwe-Ndola Road.

The minibus registration number ACP 5143 headed to Ndola from Kitwe with passengers on board collided head on with the truck laden with bags of mealie meal.

The accident happened on a stretch of road where one portion of the dual carriageway for traffic flowing from Ndola to Kitwe had been closed to facilitate maintenance leaving vehicles to now share the remaining side.

Copperbelt police commissioner Joyce Kasosa and Kitwe Central Hospital spokesperson Grey Chishimba both confirmed the fatal accident which happened around 14:00 hours at Kamfinsa stream, about two kilometres away from Kamfinsa Mobile Unit junction.

Ms Kasosa said 12 people were confirmed dead in the accident while many others were trapped and seriously injured in the accident.

“So far, 12 people have been confirmed dead and we suspect there could be others still trapped in the vehicle wreckage,” Ms Kasosa said.

She said the accident happened when the driver of truck registration number ABR 8707 belonging to Makora Investments, which was coming Ndola tried to swerve a pothole but in the process collided head on with the passenger minibus.

Ms Kasosa said the truck first hit a Toyota Chaser registration number ACL 8156 before it later collided with the minibus causing all the vehicles to careen off the highway.

    • kwena aba bemba tababepa when they say:

      imyotoka enkalamo sha shala muchalo.

where to my beloved country? this hemorrhage, this needless carnage, cutting down of people must stop now.

How may ordinary people must die this way for us to say ENOUGH?

Why is this becoming like a norm, an acceptable atarndard of life?

Maybe we must lose high profile govt officials in sufficient number in order to have immediate and lasting answers to this menacing evil plucking innocent ordinary lives away like worthless merchandise.

The casual and laid-back approach to everything in life that we have in Zambia must stop forthwith

We must change or we all perish……our choice

    • I have been reliably informed that there was another accident involving a bus on Monday March 10th, in Mpongwe and eight (8) people lost their lives.

is this how people’s lives going to be wasted?

    • Now imagine the ditches which have developed on the Turnpark to Mazabuka road and the people incharge are just dodging them waiting for other accidents to occur.

    • @slyfox
yes I totally agree with you. This is poor planning by the road contractor. the stretch between Kamfinsa Mobile Police junction and Tusheni Bar is a death trap and should have been closed along time ago. The other side of the dual carriageway should have been opened up. It has already been worked on. This is very poor planning indeed.

May the souls of the departed ones rest in peace.

    • I THOUGHT KITWE-NDOLA ROAD WERE A DUAL CARRIAGE WAY? NOW, NUMBER ONE- ROAD TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS IN ZAMBIA ARE MORE TO DO WITH THE SCANT, POOR TRAINING DRIVERS UNDERGO AND CORRUPTION ON THE PART OF LICENSES ISSUING AUTHORITIES AND THE LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENTS SUCH AS THE POLICE IN ZAMBIA MORE THAN ROADS. OF COURSE. ZAMBIA MUST ADOPT THE STRICT TRAINING STRUCTURE SUCH AS THE UK ONE WHERE BEFORE YOU GO FOR PRACTICAL TEST ONE HAS DONE A THEORY TEST AND EVEN BEFORE ONE GOES FOR THE THEORY TEST ONE HAS READ BOOKS. AND THEN IT MUST BE ENSURED THAT ONLY DESERVING CANDIDATES ARE ISSUED WITH THE LICENSES AND NOT BY CORRUPT WAYS WHICH IS COMMON PLACE IN ZAMBIA. POLICE ARE ALSO MUST BE AT LEAST CORRUPT FREE IN ORDER TO DEAL WITH CASES EFFECTIVELY. FINALLY, IN THE NEXT NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT PLANS 3/4 OF…

    • When a dual carriageway converges into one normal human beings automatically know they have to slow down to less 50 miles per hour. From the picture you can tell both or one of the vehicles involved were speeding.

  1. these Chinese inmates should have completed first with working on blackspots, and they are too slow, next black spot is kanfinsa turnoff potholes, then that corrupt stupid police roadblock where tpolice can hold incoming/outgoing traffic for 30minutes ,shame on us,may God help this country. My heart is with the families moaning.

  2. May the Souls of Our departed rest in internal peace. …..The PF Govt do you inspect the same Road ? Before commissioning the same Road it has already developed a lot of potholes . Very poor workmanship . Some contractors are not even fit to be given such Big contracts . Zambia has lost a lot of money on these fake contractors and Zambians are mute about it . We have lost a lot lives on this road

  3. I often use this road. There is a very bad pothole where the accident happened. The contractors are crawling in their works. If nothing is done soon, a lot more lives will be lost on this road. God have mercy on us and strength the families who have lost their loved ones in this accident. May the departed’s souls rest in peace.

  4. The title? If you say 12 lose lives, then you don’t need to add fatal. Fatal means people have died.editor, wake up!

    • @Gregory Zuze, I don’t necessarily agree with you. As a headline and a transient action the title is good and correct. The writer if I may, is explaining a grovelling situation with the death toll still rising!!!! The fact that this fatal accident is still claiming more lives makes the headline standout. My two pence.

    • @One Hit wonder, you don’t have to agree with this 1diot Gregory Zuze. What if the 12 lost their live through Poisoning or Carbon Monoxide from Mbaula. All those are fatal situations so its descriptive of what fatal situation that caused the loss of life. Don’t even waste time on such motherless illegal immigrants.
There is nothing wrong with the headline. May Their Souls Rest IN Eternal and Everlasting Peace. God Forbid.
      Thanks

    • Bwana, a Fatal action generally has very undesirable effects. Kumwasu tutila ati ” Ba Kolwe ba sekana ifipato”

  5. In developed countries first of all this is a site under construction, secondary hitting a pothole showing all directed to the person responsible for managing roads. The investigation would center on the works on going and traffic controls, the approvals for traaffic control strategies and the effectivenes including monitoring. defintely the site manager would be in sheet. but unfortunately this is zambia, narrow investigations, some one will condemn the one who was on the wrong lane. On the one hand such pictures shows high speeds and on a site ?????? so many wrong things anyway. May their souls rest in piece

  6. Many points can b raised especially roads it is high time the government must do something with their contractor .

  7. 1.11 members from the same family dead after road accident
2.Fatal accident along the Kitwe-Chingola road
3.One dies, three battle for their lives in Kafue road accident
    4.5 die in road accident
5.Five die in fatal road accident
6.Minibus and Macorpolo bus in head on collision on Kapiri-Ndola road, 9 people dead
7.Four die in min bus, truck collision on the Kitwe-Chingola Road
Now another 12. Mwebantu what can we do to reduce these accidents. Tomoorow it may be you or your close relative!!!!

  8. Too bad for our brothers and sisters who have lost their life, may their souls rest in peace. Drivers where there are potholes or in the black corner slow down and you will reach your destination safe.

  9. This is now getting out of hand. We are talking live here. Very unfortunate we still keeping loosing valuable lives. Looks like like no one is compelled to do anything

  10. In otherways we have to watch out for our opposite road users and pray they don’t come across pot-holes (which is impossible), Dual-carriageways is the way forward to minimize these head-on collisions.

  11. How can such an accident be allowed to happen on the Ndola Kitwe Dual-carriageway? If the other side of the dual carriageway was closed, there should have been people directing the speed limit on the other side to 40kmh or 60kmh. this just shows what happens when tenders for such kind of projects are given corruptly to companies with no experience. State house should take it’s hands off the construction and maintenance of roads. too much blood on the roads under the blood thirsty PF. condolences to the families of the deceased.

  12. Corruptions at its best. Kitwe – Ndola Dual carriage way was not in bad state requiring immediate repairs. These are some of un-cordinated projects just meant to steal thru commissions and careless borrowing from China. Instead of repairing Mufulira – Ndola, Fisenge – Masangano Roads Pf Govt instead destroyed the Dual carriage way. No wonder people are saying the PF Govt is blood thirste.

  13. so sad and our leaders are quite about it, people need to march to state house and demand some action, we can’t keep losing lives like this, there is need for action to
correct the situation and review how these road contracts are issued, gone you are
right , the worst thing is our leader is never moved when people die last time he only showed up after people complained

  14. Fellow zambians, let us not beat about the bush. The buck stops at Sata’s door because he the one incharge of RDA all in the name of action man. The dual carriage didn’t need immediate attention but in the wisdom of this man and his crew of clueless “engineers” like Willie Nsanda, gave the contract to somebody with no experience because they wanted to put more money in the pockets of a Bemba chap. How many lives should we lose before these vampires say enough? I pray that one of these days, let it be them to be found in a fatal accident.

    • Pure satanism, where has all this blood gone? road rehabilitation should speed up for them not to become a coz of bloodshed .enough blood was shed during the struggle for independence not any more , And may God punish all those involved in sheding such kind of enocent people’s blood.

    • Sincere condolences on your loss. This is really unnecessary; how does a contractor detour vehicles on a bad stretch?? Is this about maximizing profits while minimizing sensibility!? Very sad…

  15. Zambia has no roads.Visit South africa first and then you will realise that we dont have roads. If the road was good on the death spot, those people would be alive. What do people do now.SUE THE STATE FOR CAUSING DEATH TO INNOCENT LIVES FOR NOT BUILDING ROADS.Yes sue the state and claim compensation because this state negligency. How can a country 50 years after independence fail to have descent roads?I dont understand.I used the dual carriage way in the 80’s.It was good then but iam certain its worse off after 3 Presidents!God save us.MTSRIP.

    • @CAF-U, you are right. Unfortunately in Zambia we have reached a stage where we call maintenance work development. People have even lost track of which road is being constructed and which one is being maintained. Whenever I drive on the SA roads I am impressed by their routine and scheduled maintenance where roads are inspected and even the minor defects taken care of even where there are no visible potholes! Can’t we learn something about keeping something in working order JUST FOR ONCE?

    • Mwana South Africa I agree has very good roads but it still has nastier accidents on its roads than Zambia!

  16. How do you detour traffic on a bad road? Seriously! Why didn’t the contractor just grade a new detour devoid of those hazards? Preferably even one on each side of the carriage way? Someone better be brought to account here; matters of speeding aside.

  17. Very sad. However just say 12 die in road accident and not fatal accident as when people die it is automatic that it is fatal.

  18. We need prayers and one thing i remember during the Kaunda days,a commission of enquary could have been put in place to investigate the reason why we are losing people like this!

  19. This is clearly an accident that could have been prevented. If and when there are maintenance works being conducted on a road reasonable and civilised authorities put up contingency measures at the affected place. These may include slowing down all traffic. Flashing lights or reflective signs warning all about the unusual situation ahead. A head on collision is exactly what you obviously want to prevent when you divert traffic from a dual carriageway to a single road. 12 people dead! The dual carriageway was constructed to stop these very kind of accidents. Whoever is in charge of this road maintenance needs to be charged

  20. @Peter RTSA is already doing what you have suggested but no system is full proof. If we make things harder for people to get driving licenses we will have more of the opposite a lot of unlicensed drivers on the road and the situation will be worse. The drivers become a big threat after they get their drivers licenses because they feel that once they are licensed they do not need to mind their driving especially drivers between the ages of nineteen(19) years and thirty Five(35) years are the phantom menace. These have no patience and like speeding.
