Over 10 people yesterday perished when a bus they were travelling in from Mwinilunga to Solwezi in North-Western Province plugged into Kabompo River.

North-Western Province Police Commissioner Eugene Sibote confirmed the accident yesterday stating that 10 people died on the spot while three believed to be among the dead were still trapped in the bus.

Mr Sibote said the accident happened around 08:00 hours when the bus lost control and plugged into the river.

He said 16 people who sustained various injuries were rushed to Mwinilunga District Hospital for treatment while four who were seriously injured were rushed to Solwezi Hospital.

Mr Sibote said the police were yet to determine the number of passengers who were in the bus belonging to Jitotwe bus.

“We are yet to get more information on how many were on board in the bus,”he said.

    • Keep God out of this.
You asked God for more vehicles and God gave us. We asked God to provide more buses and he did. Do you wnat God to also come and service your vehicles and train your drivers? C’mon God is not that cheap.

    • Is this the way the people are to pay for decades of infrastructure decay? Paying with their lives?

This is a sad chapter in our history and we are painfully learning the untold misery and anguish of corruption and neglect of our infrastructure can inflict on us, robbing us of our loved ones.

I wish all the injured a quick and complete recovery and may the souls of the departed rest in peace

    • My observation is that, there has been more deaths in these 2 years under PF compared to other previous governments. May God comfort their families.

  1. No Devil on our roads. Never at all.
The biggest devil on our roads is RTSA/ZP and whoever claims to be responsible for wilfully not taking road safety seriously. unfortunately its normal in Zambia to say prayers where its not necessary.

  2. Oh no! I have relations in that part of the country – please publish names of the victims so we can be well informed. Very sad indeed. Please font drive at night in Zambia if you can avoid it.

    • Night or day, same, same. This one happened 08:00, not 20:00, and we are not even told what time it had started off from its original starting point.

  3. I think its time we standardized public transport vehicles. its like these buses are now eath traps.Igf we had serious govts such issues are sorted out within short periods of time but for as Zambians ists a song which does not finish coupled with corruption by police officers & other workers bwafya.

  4. Shocking! Some one in the PF “Cartel” is having his birthday soon, he can only drink zedians blood. Ni nfiti ikulu, pretending to love the greens yet again, wants’ the red.
Let the wise calculate his number. P.O.Z 1. D of 27, 90 and PF master cadre.
    Is it bivad?

  5. This is sad state of affairs. If it was any other country by now Minister of Transport would have resigned; RTSA and Police chiefs would have been fired.
Here we are day in day out people dying and CNP has no plan.

    • Why resign when people are over speeding and killing themselves. Is the Minister the one driving these vehicles?

    • @John chinena, are you as daft as your name sounds? Install cameras along the whole hog. This is the 21st century!

  6. I will not comment on the tragedy of the accident. I want to tell the LT editor that he is S.H.I.T for allowing the bus to be plugged into the river. LT, it is not plugged, it is PLUNGED. The bus plunged into the river. The bus did not lose control, it is the bus driver that lost control. How many times am i going to teach you clowns!

  7. Day in day out people are dying on our roads and someone working for ratsa is receiving a salary. Surely for nothing coz if they were working we wouldnt have received such news everyday. If they had been working we wouldnt be worry of our lives. Ratsa

  8. TO BAD AND VERY SAD NEWS. THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD PUT SPEED LIMITERS TO ALL THIS BIG BUSES TRAVELING LONG DISTANCES.THE ACCIDENT HAPPENED WHEN THE DRIVER LOST CONTROL DUE TO EXCESSIVE SPEED. THEY SHOULD LOCK THESE BUSES AT 80KM PER HOUR.

  9. The other day I was telling my sister that an accident is bound to be recorded soon involving Jitotwe buses because of over speeding. I happen to drive on the Chingola – Solwezi road every weekend in the morning. Each time I meet an Jitotwe bus, they appear to be moving at 120 kilometres per hour.

To make matters worse, the pot holes make these buses change lanes disregarding the presence of other motorists on the roads. They like skidding alot.

  10. Among the injured people who were taken to Mwinilunga, one missionary under the United Methodist Church has died in Mwinilunga General hospital this evening. Too bad and may God only give comfort to the bereaved families.

  11. Mwebantu news reports only 3 dead and Lusakatimes reports more than 10 dead. You journalists learn to report correctly. Sorry about the accidents. MTSRIP.

  12. Zambian gvr should come across to lock all public transports like bus , these buses move up to 120km per hour, must be reduced to 100klm. It will save us and the life place of the bus. And all signs must be desplayed,

  13. TOO BAD! POOR ROAD NETWORKS (WERE THE GOVT. SHOULD BE BLAMED). EXCESSIVE OR OVER SPEEDING BY THE DRIVER. I WITNESSED ON SEVERAL TIMES WHE AM TRAVELING, BECAUSE I LOVE MOST JITOTWE LUXIURY BUSES, BECAUSE OF THEIR GOOD SERVICE AND TIME MANAGEMENT, SO I ALWAYS USE THEIR BUSES. WHEN I SIT ON THE FRONT I CAN SEE ON THE DASHBOARD, ON 3/4 OCASIONS I WITNESED THE SPEEDOMETER RISE UP 130KM/H EISH. BUT NOTHING JUST TEARS, COZ AM VRY FAR FROM THE SYSTEM CANT EXPRESS MUCH. CONDOLENCES. MTSRIEPP.

  14. MTSOTDRIP. I FEEL GOVNT SHUD WORK ON ROADS AND PUT ROAD SIGNS TO INDICATE THE NATURE OF THE ROAD FOR DRIVERS TO SEE. THE ROAD FROM CHINGOLA TO JIMBE IS NEGLECTED BY ALL THE POLICY MAKERS INCLUDING AREA MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENTS. WHAT A SHAME. IF PEOPLE HAV NO HEARTS FOR CITIZENS LET THEM RESIGN AND GIV OTHERS THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF PROVINDING SECURITY AND DEVELOPMENT TO THE PEOPLE WHO PUT THEM IN OFFICES. FOR ME THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A WIZARD, A THIEF
AND A DISFUNCTIONAL MINISTER, MP OR PRESIDENT, PLEASE SAVE OUR COUNTRY YOU POLICY MAKERS WE ARE SUFFERING ALOT.
