THE Mineworkers Union of Zambia (MUZ) has called on Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) miners to remain calm in view of the current happenings at the giant-mining firm.

MUZ general secretary Joseph Chewe said miners should not completely lose hope over the operational challenges at KCM because with necessary measures put in place, the company could still bounce back.

Mr Chewe said in an interview in Kitwe yesterday that the recent uncertainty surrounding KCM and Vedantta Resources in particular should not make miners to completely lose hope.

“What is important for now is for KCM to commit itself to implementing identified measures that will help turn around the economic fortunes of the company because it is still viable,” Mr Chewe said.

He, however, said the problem facing KCM and the protests in London against Vedantta should serve Government a wake up call over the need to have some level of management control in mining operations in the country.

“If we had some management control, we could easily have avoided some of the things happening in mining companies like KCM,” he said.

Mr Chewe said the KCM situation had raised worry on MUZ because should the mine go under, its impact would affect miners.

He urged Government to continue monitoring closely the operations of KCM so that necessary measures are taken to avoid any surprises.

Vice-President Guy Scott recently said Government was closely monitoring KCM operations.

  1. Typical of some of you Zambians away from home and living in the comfy of being away from Home. Mr Chewe is right in asking miners to stay calm. He is right in asking and advising GRZ to be careful with these foreign mining companies.

This matter is between ‘life and death’ if you know what I mean for Zambians and miners in particular. We need answers from KCM, things have gone wrong in fact, very wrong in its operations. We need lasting solutions to these occurrences in the future and for this, we need to remain CALM and collected.

Let the men and women involved in the investigations do their job. Throwing stones and other ways of violent protests will only make matters worse. Ba Chewe, I am with you all the way please continue with your work.

  2. This looks a reaction from the Press Mr ZCTU, Are you in touch with KCM Management yourself. This will boost your members morale if you speak to them facts from your engagements with Management…dialogue, face to face. Arrange a meeting with KCM management instead of reacting to protests in the UK! and then tell us.

  3. Cry my beloved country! The mmd sold our mines for pennies on the dollar. We openned new mines in northwestern province and yet we continue to remain poor! Now, we have plans of opening another new mine in lower zambezi…honestly for what purpose…..! Pa Zambia inchito nibola…no pressure from its people….the voters.” Zambians are so docile, had I wanted I would have ruled them for another 27 years”-KK. Bashi Panji could never had said it any better. Shame…shame on us the people as we let our pathetic leaders decide our destiny.
