A KASAMA man caused a stir on Monday night when he arrived at the ZESCO offices with beddings demanding to spend a night at the premises as a way of protesting the failure by the electricity firm to connect power his house despite paying seven months ago.

The man who identified himself as Thomas Kabwe of Location Township who had with him a set of beddings was turned away by bewildered ZESCO staff that told him the electricity firm did not offer lodging
facilities.

Mr Kabwe was, however, adamant that he would be spending the night at the well-lit regional ZESCO offices because the offices, unlike his home, had electricity.

Mr Kabwe who arrived early in the evening by taxi, said he his children would arrive later to be part of the unusual protest.

“I have children in grades nine, 11 and 12. They need to study. They will join me here so they can use the electricity here for studying,” he said.

He complained that he had paid the electricity connection fee of close to K1, 000 last year in September but seven months down the line, his house was still no electrified.

What apalled him most was the apparent fact that other customers that paid connection fees after him had allegedly been connected already.

An emotional Mr Kabwe also wondered why he had been reduced to pleading for a service he had paid for.

When contacted for a comment, A Mrs Banda from the Zesco public relations department promised to get back to the Times as soon as she was in possession of the facts relating to the incident.

  1. Indeed its too much BA zesco. They demand payment then use your money for months without connecting you. Something must be done before we all go to camp with our families at their well lit offices here in Ndola.

  2. I paid for meter separation in October, 2013. Up to now ZESCO has not showed up. Truly pathetic. The only things these ZESCO failures are good at is paying themselves hefty allowance and bonuses.

  3. ZESCO just burn your customer service charter. You a just a disgrace everywhere.Visit Luanshya and see for yourself on this connection thing of your.Own up.

  4. Thomas Kabwe deserves a pat on the back for doing what most docile and passive Zambians have failed to do…imagine if we had a thousand of these individuals.
I salute you Mr. Kabwe for standing up for your consumer rights!!

  5. viva che kabwe.zesco very corrupt institution.is there no any company in the world which can bring in competition 2 zesco, multichoice, larfage, airtel, mtn etc?

  6. This is the type of vigilance I expect from the citizenry, although Kabwe waited too long already. There is this behavior pattern in Zambia of waiting for things to go over the falls before paying attention. This has resulted in our service delivery custodians to also play brinkmanship with our lives and resources. We do not even need NGOs for this sort of representation. I hope other families in the same situation will gather their beddings (beds, even) and join the Kabwe family. Take the 2-plate stoves as well; there are free sockets at the ZESCO premises to connect and cook your meals.
