The Opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President George Mpombo has described as political gibberish the statement that the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) should voluntarily de-register if party president Nevers Mumba remains defiant to calls for a convention.

MMD spokesperson Dora Siliya has been quoted to have warned that if the former ruling party waits until 2016 to have Dr. Mumba removed as party President there will be no MMD to talk about the more reason it should de-register itself if it fails to raise money for holding of an extraordinary convention to elect new office-bearers.

[pullquote]what should also be understood is that the issue is not about Dr. Mumba being the MMD president but that it is about the MMD being the biggest opposition political with the capacity to provide check and balances to the PF government.[/pullquote]

But Dr. Mpombo, who is also former Defense Minister under the previous MMD regime, told Qfm news that the idea of having the former ruling party de-registered on the basis of Dr. Mumba’s alleged defiance to calls for a convention has no substance and does not make any sense.

Dr. Mpombo added that such kind of reasoning as has been attributed to Ms. Siliya is also hollow and politically bankrupt as there is no person in his right frame of mind who would subscribe to the de-registration of the former ruling party on the basis of what he has termed as petty wrangles.

The PDP president said what the MMD should instead do is to understand the important role it plays in the working of the countrys democracy especially that it is the biggest opposition political party.

He said it is for this reason that people that are calling for de-registration of the MMD are on the wrong side of history as they do not understand the important role that the former ruling party plays in the democratization process of the country.

The opposition leader said what should also be understood is that the issue is not about Dr. Mumba being the MMD president but that it is about the MMD being the biggest opposition political with the capacity to provide check and balances to the Patriotic Front (PF) government.

He said it is on this basis he also finds the maneuvers to have Dr. Mumba removed as the MMD president as being a parochial agenda as it goes against the very purpose of the existence of the former ruling party.

  1. Well articulated George. The call for a convention 2 years after emerging from a constitutionally mandated one is hyperbolic never synonymous with rational actors. This is why the entire political base of democratic MMD in all provinces as do friends of MMD in the democratic society around the world are not going to waste their funds on it a testimony of it being rejected. Its now water under the bridge. My advise to madam Siliya is just do Sata a “Dochi kubeba” for the signed up funds. MMD is bigger than your assignment. Your crusade is nothing part of illogical political theatrics of a 1 term PF regime. Its actually a curse on oneself to work for and support PF which is an upfront to common good. Unless you repeat, posterity is set to judge you harshly.

    • I mean: Unless you “repent”, Madam Siliya posterity is set to judge you harshly. PF has done more harm to this country than the combination of all past regimes. We are heading for a socialist revolution that may not forgive such kind of complicity with the most useless adversarial regime ever emerged in our country.

  2. Since when did a man with the name of an antelope become intelligent enough to understand wise words. Mpombo has obviously missed the message couched in Dora’s intelligently articulated argument. He should worry more about his political party than about MMD. PF is taking care of MMD. There will be no MMD by 2016, exactly our goal. There are too many dull people in these other political parties. I would advise the MMD rebels to join PF instead of destabilising our plans for MMD. MMD is finished.

    • You are the dullest Mwembeshi, you are missing the whole point, I feel pity for you that an antelope thinks better than you do!

    • @Mwembeshi
I certainly do not want MMD to bounce back iN its current state but the day MMD will die will be the same day democracy will falter. Even if you swear by PF, MMD will help keep PF from doing bad things by checkmating them, even if PF is doing bad things MMD would have also done. Opposition is IMPORTANT. Only fools would wish all parties die but theirs. I actually would still WANT a very strong PF in opposition if dislodged as they will surely provide checks an balances.

Look at US and UK: The Labour in UK and the Conservatve have been alternating in taking Government so MMD may still mold itself into some good political party in future that could provide good leadership to the Zambian people.

Even now, it’s a good politcal party with less dangertous cadres compared to…

Read Dora Siliya’s statement again. I don’t know if you ever did English Comprehension in primary school (if you didn’t, you should be seriously worried and re-enrol yourselves into primary school again!). Dora Siliya’s message is simple: without the extra-ordinary convention, MMD is as good as dead – as good as self-deregistration, no hope, kaput..!! And that is the very reason why I don’t like HER actually, because herself and the other so-called MMD rebels could give PF a tough time in 2016 if we let them. I hope you get my point now. I don’t care about all the arguments about democracy blah blah blah – not that democracy is not important, but that at the moment we need to kill MMD for it to participate more usefully and effectively in our Zambian democracy.

  3. Its wishful thinking 2 say MMD is finished. Sata knows better hence his strategy 2 destabilize it. PF is a gathering of different political parties and it will show very soon. Muzagabana PF…….watch the space!

  4. PamaFi new cadre Dora is really doing a great job for them distabilising the MMD! These so called politicians without morals, they can do and say anything to get paid. A shame indeed.

  5. The Post destroyed RB in 2011 but now they are building him. Anybody who is painted bad by the Post will become a hero in the eyes of Zambians. The Post is the most despised newspaper in Zambia.

    • Abena, just because you despise it doesn’t mean we all despise it. Read your trusted papers, we will continue reading our Post. You can continue bingeing on Zambian Watchdog since it seems most Zambians prefer poor quality in everything. It is the very reason Zambians workers are having problems with foreign investors, they have no taste for standards and so when foreign investors realise that they bring more sophisticated workers from abroad and we start complaining about discrimination and racism. Give a Zambian a job and the next thing you know they have stolen…! Leave us to our Post newspaper…and please don’t read it., because you misunderstand it so badly.

  6. These rebels have faied miserably. The MMD consittution says if you manage to get 4 provinces to submit petitions demanding for an extraordinary covnention, it should be held. Only one province, Western Province, has sent a petition and this was after the former Minister of Finance trounced miserably by Nevers in the MMD presidential race 2 yeats ago, travelled to Mongu to pay a small group tp write a petition. All other provinces have refused.

Now the lady is facing aK800,000,000.00 legal bill which she does not have, she is under pressure mudala to pay back money she has already eaten when the agreement was that she should have hounded Nevers from MMD by the time he came back from Brussels. Meanwhile, her parliamentary seat is frozen. So now she is saying anything. UKUSABAILA
