THE Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) have erected tents at Helen Kaunda Secondary School grounds for the homeless Mindolo North squatters whose houses where demolished two weeks ago.

The DMMU has offered humanitarian aid to residents affected by the demolition exercise by the Kitwe City Council (KCC) on houses built on illegally acquired plots on land belonging to Mopani Copper Mines (MCM) and Phoenix materials.

The team which is under the Vice Presidents’ office has put up over 100 tents and would erect more after undertaking a further assessment of the situation in the area.

The squatters have however vowed not to leave the Mindolo North because the land was duly offered to them.

They have since erected makeshift stalls while others have put up bricks to make temporal shelters.

KCC spokesperson Dorothy Sampa when contacted over the refusal by the squatters to relocate referred queries to the office the District Commissioner as it was the DMMU that was handling the programme.

Meanwhile Green Party President Peter Sinkamba has appealed to the KCC to allocate alternative land to the affected families.

Mr Sinkamba said land for the affected families should be quickly secured to assist stranded families.

He said green party was ready to assist the affected victim’s source funding from cooperating partners for the construction of new houses in legally acquired areas.

  1. The political space is becoming more competitive with each of the major political parties seeking to further their fortunes. It all began with HH donating food, then pastor Mumba donating blankets. Now PF is erecting Tents. Funny, how they realised they scored a spectacular own goal and trying to make amends. 2016 will be tough .
where is the empire (referee) , they surely need to be alert. This will be an epic final, the tightest elections since independence. Goodluck to all political players , we are enjoying the race.

    • Umpire is not just a (tennis ref) he is an official who watches a game or match closely to enforce the rules and arbitrate on matters arising from the play.

    • Just as expected, the people will not use those humane tents. What a waste of money by DMMU, but atleast they chance to practice how to handle “disasters”.

  2. The Kitwe City Council are stup!d id!ots. why didnt they come in the very time plot were being sold and structures being erected? you didnt act fairly by demolishing houses. he councilor should be held reliable.

    • I thought the same,….

But you know how people are,…

Zambian’s have gotten used to Back door kind of things, due to the system being rotten to the core, that they even forget to be careful at the end,….. Demand has just been created in Kitwe,…. Houses will go up

    • WHAT KITWE CITY COUNCIL DID (DEMOLISHING HOUSES) WAS THE RIGHT THING. I PERSONALLY COMMEND AND THANK THEM FOR TAKING SUCH A BOLD BUT UNPOPULAR ACTION. IT HAS EFFECTIVELY DRIVEN A POINT HOME. NEXT TIME WHEN PEOPLE ARE BUYING PLOTS I AM PRETTY SURE THEY WILL BE CAUTIOUS ABOUT FOLLOWING THE RIGHT PROCEDURES TO DO THINGS LEGALLY. KITWE CITY COUNCIL- JOB WELL DONE.

      THE TENTS LOOK BEAUTIFUL THOUGH.

  3. Tough hey! did Kitwe City Council anticipate this back lash? looks they didn’t think through the consequences well. I one time visited the following townships Kwacha, Bulangilo & Kamitondo in Kitwe. what I saw was that every house was occupied by five to ten households making an average of 20 people per house. People living in small side rooms extended to what looked like a small two or three bedroomed former council house. I have just been thinking if those are the people who bought plots trying to build the houses then they have no where to go. KCC you are in for it.

  4. @YAKS.
“…every house was occupied by five to ten households…

I AM PRETTY SURE YOU MEANT, ‘HOUSEHOLDERS’ INSTEAD OF “HOUSEHOLDS”.

  5. Zambians can never be fooled by Pf govt masquerading as acts of mercy to homeless families made by PF govt in the first place. Kitwe Council has been managed by PF party for more than 4 yrs now and this PF council resolved to demolish houses on land they (PF) illegally allocated to their people. Out of back lash they are now desperate to amend matters. Its too late, Zambians already know PF as a uncaring, greedy, Bemba dominated and deceptive government.
UPND and MMD came to donate and console the people, PF threatened to arrest their leaders. PF govt is oppressive to Zambians.

  6. WELL DONE DR. NEVERS MUMBA FOR COMMANDING THE DMMU TO ERECT TENTS. THAT’S LEADERSHIP.

IMAGINE AS FORMER VEEPEE, YOU HAD TO TELL THEM THAT THERE IS DMMU UNDER THE VP’s OFFICE WHICH COULD IMMEDIATELY ERECT THE TENTS.

SORRY VEEPEE WAS IN BOLIVIA…WE WERE TOLD THAT THEY HAVE MASSIVE EXPERIENCE IN GPOVERNANCE BUT HAD TO LET AN OPPOSITION LEADER TELL THEM WHAT TO DO.

  7. This a disaster ! sleeping in tents in June how sad! These are the same people that brought you to power and now they are refugees in their own country what a shame!! Some one must be made accountable for this mess, it is unacceptable does it always have to take the President to make things happen? I feel sorry for HE MCS because he surrounded by incompetent men and women and that is why he calls the useless because there is no other term to describe them!
How can they even allow such a thing to happen and then pretend to be doing something about it who are they fooling?? Mwapia chinto zisila just watch this space useless ministers making the President look bad cos you are not working just getting fat HE please fire them!!!!!!!!!

  8. Nevers needs to pray for these people they lack a lot when it comes to brain department, even the supposed smart people become dull, even this could
have been avoided if someone used their head before getting excited with
power. When it comes to land, all the land belongs to the government like
everywhere else in the world, so the government has power to get some of
that land back and build those people something, we shouldn’t be praising corporations taking habitation from ordinary citizens like silly Peter,

  9. Poor reporting indeed…why not make mention also the Red Cross that worked i collabo with DMMU in erecting those tents as can be seen in those pictures..anybody frm DMMU there?

  10. Too late the Hero, where was the government? now trying to score points because the opposition has been there; In the first place; the government should have found an alternative measure for those people before they houses were demolished and should have held accountable the people that sold them the plots;
