PRESS RELEASE
For Immediate Release
20th June 2014

NGOCC CONDEMNS DR. MANDA’S PATRIARCHAL REASONING

THE Non Governmental Organisations’ Coordinating Council (NGOCC) condemns in the strongest terms the sweeping statement by Dr Francis Manda that Zambian women had lost their cultural values.

Dr Manda’s statement epitomizes the entrenched gender prejudices against women and the patriarchal nature of our society. It is totally unacceptable for Dr. Manda to say Zambian women had lost their cultural values because of the misconduct of a few. Just like some men, there are women who misbehave in public. For example, should all men be condemned just because of the few grandfathers and fathers who defile babies?

It will be unfair for anyone to suggest that men had lost their values just because of the many men we see every day in bars and on the streets drinking alcohol. Society’s moral decay should not only be made dependent upon the conduct of women. Issues of moral decay need to address both men and women.

While NGOCC does not support immoral conduct by either women or men, it is wrong to suggest that there is too much careless drinking among women in Zambia, especially in the absence of any credible baseline. We would like to remind Dr Manda that both men and women are equal and enjoy equal rights.

It is strange that Dr. Manda wants to ascribe the responsibility of parenting to women only to the exclusion of men. It is the responsibility of both men and women to take care of their children. The Zambian women demand an apology from Dr Manda over his imprudent statement.

Zambia has well respected women who are role models and it is unacceptable to denigrate all Zambian women in such a manner.

Can we get some Indian women to help Dr Manda on this issue. Once more keep it up Doc, you always call a spade a spade!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

#3 Comment By Gen On June 21, 2014 @ 11:53 am

NGOCC has got it all wrong….. Dr manda’s concerns are of a moral nature and is not in anyway advocating or promoting human rights abuses and prejudices against women.

By our very culture (which must never be confused with human rights) we hold our women to high moral standings as they are a mirror of our society and families, but what what we are witnessing today is massive moral decay at a breakneck speed in our women.

Its undeniable that there are more married women in Zambia today with extra-marital affairs than men.

Grillo by trying to compare men and women is basically saying its okay for women to lose morals as long as they have equal rights.

Grillo should just STFU!!

Advocating for moral decay will not make up for her ugliness…

MANDA IS 100% RIGHT. THE TRUTH HURTS. WOMEN IN ZAMBIA ARE WALKING NAKED, THEY NOW DRINK SENSELESSLY IN THE MANNER OUR MOTHERS NEVER DID.NGOCC WOMEN SHOULD CONDEMN THE ERODED SELF RESPECT IN OUR ZAMBIAN WOMEN. I SAW PICTURES WHERE WOMEN WERE SENSELESSLY DRUNK IMITATING UKUNYENGANA WHILE…IT WAS SHAMEFUL. DO NOT CONDEMN MANDA JUST BECAUSE THAT’S WHAT YOU DO OR INTEND TO DO. ZAMBIAN WOMEN YOU HAVE LOST IT.

#5 Comment By FuManchu On June 21, 2014 @ 11:20 pm

Thanks @ Gen. The NGOCC chairperson is offside and should have taken her time to digest the spirit with which Dr Manda was making his comments than go off tangent! Is it not very recently when a study revealed Zambian women as the world leaders in alcohol consumption! What was Grillo’s response?

#6 Comment By OldRugsOUT On June 21, 2014 @ 8:14 am

Dr Manda is speaking from own personal experience, but again doubt whether the Doc had class when it came to the selection of a life partner or was a case of village Elders organising for you, from a clan they know.

This Grillo woman should understand that ubuchende bwamwaume tabonaula ichupo. So i end here.

#10 Comment By Kas On June 21, 2014 @ 9:19 am

Why deny the obvious? Just help your fellow women to be positive with life. Dr Manda is like a military General & has seen the trend women are taking. Given a chance, the women would love to see their husband pregnant or in the name of equality!

#11 Comment By James Kanganingani On June 21, 2014 @ 9:20 am

Please don’t take Dr Manda seriously. The man sometime back mislead the nation the footballers should avoid sex before a match is played. When I started reading sports medicine, I discovered that it was not true. You just loose rest and not the way he was being scientific about it. Any he is very good in his own field as a doctor but on other things he just yaps to a point of misleading people. You can’t say women have lost values when it is the same with men. I am a man myself and statistically, we are worse in loss of cultural values

#12 Comment By Scrutinizerer On June 21, 2014 @ 9:48 am

I did not see such a sharp response from Grillo on the recent WHO report which rated Zambian women as the worst alcohol consumers in the WORLD. Ofcourse, in every situation there are the good and the bad. The final rating depend on what prevails in the majority or what comes out vividly…..
Grillo has the obligation to defend and speak for our women folks, but must not be seen to only condemn Dr Manda, she must also acknowledge what Manda said and see what can be done to help erase this ‘bad’ picture about our women in general of which I’m sure is not only in Dr Manda’s mind but many other men including women
General picture our traffic police portray is that they are corrupt. but not all of them are(I stand to be corrected on the latter)

#13 Comment By Pumpe On June 21, 2014 @ 11:23 am

Exactly. Another case in point, when PF cadres beat up UPND women, she was mute, Dr. manda touches on what is true, she goes wild

#14 Comment By mulondwe muzungu On June 21, 2014 @ 10:09 am

A recent world survey about drinking habits of countries put Zambian women at the very top. Does that come as a surprise? Besides Dr. Manda is a medical doctor and probably talking from his experience. Two wrongs don’t make a right so men’s misbehavior should not justify the women’s. Speaking from gender roles ,a society becomes unstable if the women are unstable because they hold or rather bind society together.

#15 Comment By Senama On June 21, 2014 @ 10:41 am

Dr. Manda is right. See how women behaved in Parliament on Wednesday, who can call them as dysent? I would rather call me mother of that time as a well respective and good because they had mwambo. Today you ladies have sold yourselves even to the dogs. You do not have respect in society. How can yo mupongoshi umwaume see you dancing in your so called Kitchen Parties half necked? No wonder you find that the son in-law has raped his mother in-law because you showed him everything in the begining.

#16 Comment By Stephen On June 21, 2014 @ 10:56 am

Next they want us to adopt their surnames in the name of equality. Women u never know wats next

#17 Comment By amazon On June 21, 2014 @ 10:58 am

Given a chance , Zambian women can move naked.
A woman shall not put on a cloth of a man and a man shall not put on a cloth for a woman.
Men have what comes out of the Zip but women have to remove the all Trousers to URINATE…………….OK.

#18 Comment By Chilyata On June 21, 2014 @ 11:33 am

Kekekek! You mean they have to remove the whole Ar.se from the trouser ka!

#19 Comment By Chilyata On June 21, 2014 @ 11:12 am

It is Ar.sewhores like Beatrice Grillo who are contributing to the low moral fibre of our society and women even misbehaving; getting divorced or even never getting married!
It is unchristian to say that “men and women are equal” – even the Bible says men are not Equal to Women! It is these bitc.hes like Grillo who have married low class Bazungus who are destroying marriages in Zambia and encouraging women to drink.
By saying men are equla to Women, Grillo is saying that women can drink as much as men; or have sex with as many partners as men, etc! Ugly women like that Fat Grilled Beef are the real curse of our country. They copy anything from the West where their “Pimp” husbands come from and sell it to vulnerable and naive young women in Zambia!

#20 Comment By chilyatasmother On June 21, 2014 @ 5:42 pm

@ Chilyata, why are you insulting mama Grillo? She is old enough to be your mother. So, may all inuslts you’ve directed to Ms Grillo, MAY THEY BE RE-DIRECTED TO YOUR BIOLOGICAL MOTHER because unless your father is homosexual, you were certainly born of a woman. Maybe you come from the “DOG CLAN”

#21 Comment By Chilyata On June 21, 2014 @ 11:26 am

Grillo – are you married or that Grilled kazungu of yours is a PIMP. In our Zambian Culture, Women are NOT Equal Men and will never ever be! Real cultured and more intelligent women like Anne Widcombe of Great Britain, a lon standing parliamentarian and Minister in the UK Govt publicly say that Women are not Equal and will never be Equal to Men.
Who are you to say the otherwise? In the Zambian context, Men pay Lobola because they MARRY and women GET married and move to live with the man – not the other way! Bitches like Grillo are destroying the morality of our Society. Why cant she go and live in her husband’s country?
Is it not because her husband is a kama low class and wanted criminal? To hell with your NGOCC – just shabby it in your big smelly ar.se!!

#22 Comment By Peter On June 21, 2014 @ 6:16 pm

NGOCCs OR IS IT NGO, ARE DESTROYING THE CULTURAL FABRIC OF OUR SOCIETY. THIS IS BECAUSE THEY ARE SPONSORED BY THE WEST AND JUST DO WHAT THE SPONSORS SAY OR DO. NGOCCs/NGOs MUST DIFFERENTIATE THAT AFRICA (AND ASIAN COUNTRIES INCLUDING JAPAN) ARE CULTURAL COUNTRIES WHILE MOST EAUROPEAN, BRITAIN AND AMERICA ARE LIFE STYLE SOCIETIES. JUST ADOPTING EVERYTHING AND ANYTHING THE WEST SAYS IS FO0LISH.

#23 Comment By Wantanshi On June 21, 2014 @ 11:37 am

A recent study indicated that Zambian woman along with her South African counterpart emerged as the greatest guzzlers of liquor in the world. Excessive alcohol consumption catapults one into disinhibited behaviour like wanton sex. You see a woman drunk the chances are over 100% that she will have sex with whoever asks for it. Lets not deny this reality, Zambian woman drinks excessively and along with that conducts herself loosely.

#24 Comment By kwindi On June 21, 2014 @ 11:43 am

I think she is even drunk as she was speaking. Shame on her

#25 Comment By waluma njoka On June 21, 2014 @ 12:34 pm

Is she saying women can walk topless in public just because men can?

#26 Comment By Mwembeshi On June 21, 2014 @ 12:34 pm

Is Beatrice Grillo a transgender? No disrespect, just her looks sometimes get me confused – she tends to look more like a man. Otherwise her comments, as usual, are extremely daft and way off the mark. Dr Manda has the support of every worried Zambian. The issue of Zambian women drinking too much is not only counter-cultural, it also has health consequences. Most of these girls and women drinking too much for their bodies will have terrible middle ages due to poor health status, that is for those who will survive possible death from liver complications. The woman’s body cannot take as much alcohol as the man’s. She should be backing Dr Manda, rather than lashing out so carelessly. Who needs a role model like her!

#27 Comment By Imprezza On June 21, 2014 @ 12:37 pm

It’s true women have taken the centre kumoba

#28 Comment By Kayula On June 21, 2014 @ 2:09 pm

Please madam, we respect our women and when we talk about moral decay among Zambian women we know what we mean. I am a married man and I discuss marital issues with my colleagues. It’s very disappointing to hear 8 out of 10 of my colleagues say given chance to go back in life they would not marry. Am not saying all men are ok but we know that men and women play different roles in society and our prayer is that women should not forget their roles. Dr. Manda is right, he means well to our society, please let’s not be negative about such good advice, a society with reckless women has no direction coz women are a reflection of society.

#29 Comment By Spy Mashra On June 21, 2014 @ 2:22 pm

The doctor has nothing to apologize for, the women who have lost culture instead should apologize to us men for bringing zambian dignity into disrepute .  Look at those tight trousers on skewed shapeless waists, exposing g-strings everywhere. where is the pride of a woman if she has to wrestle for a bottle all night long with men? Is that culture? mama Beatrice something golden about women is truly lost , lets face it. learn to appreciate correction rather than justifying immoral displays. It’s not about rights its about sanity befitting women’s digity.

#30 Comment By The Chosen One On June 21, 2014 @ 3:03 pm

Look at the support Dr Manda has garnered here.
From the 18 comments above only one seem not to support Dr Manda’s sentiments. Wow!!!!

Madam grillo you have more male hormones than female. Why are you against us your fellow men.Be real and support Doc Manda.

#34 Comment By chola On June 30, 2014 @ 11:48 am

My take on this. In a home who teaches a child? Its the parents and they do so by example. Now if the husband(men) are heads of the household, what kind of examples should they be setting for their families. In my house I do as my husband does be it good or bad cause he sets the example. If he drinks so will I, if he cheats so will I. If you ask me this is a simple issue. Men start by setting a good example for women just as parents would be good examples for children. Cause if not Dr Manda can yap all he likes, women will do only what they are taught by their husbands be it drinking or cheating.
