Newly erected statues at the Examinations council of Zambia

The Examinations Council of Zambia has removed the statues at the entrance to the institution after widespread public condemnation.

A check at the ECZ on Haile Selassie Avenue around Longacres revealed that the two pieces of art have been removed.
ECZ Spokesman RonaldTembo confirmed that management at the institution met and reviewed the situation and decided to pull down the statues.

Mr Tembo said the ECZ is a public institution and shall always remain open to public scrutiny.

A social media campaign prompted by Lusaka based motivational speaker Mubita Nawa drew a huge amount of interest in the statues with many people demanding that they be pulled down.

Nawa labeled the sculptures ugly and argued that they did not portray a real Zambian.

  1. Finally ! Well done Mubita Nawa, i can see that you are doing a good job apart from your motivational talks and swindling accusations.

    • I don’t trust entrepreneurship motivational speakers who can’t boast of their own big private companies.Mubita Nawa and Chibamba Kanyama are all con artists. They take advantage of their fast talking and charismatic skills to make big dollars out of the feeble minded.

    • @Wiseman, these 2 people u have mentioned are those who have discovered their strengths/abilities, invested in them and using to develop themselves and others. Find your own niche, stop complaining and do something we’ll be able to recognise your name by.

As for the statues, glad they listened. Nawa is actually hosting a public event right now to put up new statues. Talk coupled with action is commendable

    • @Jst saying
Yes i know right ! Just like an armed robber can discover his weapons and fighting strengths/abilities and invest in them to make easy money from the defenseless.I get your logic. My point is for people to practice what they preach. Why should someone tell me what to do to be a big businessman when he or she has no big business of his own ? Remove that speck from your eye before removing mine.Chibamba up to now is still changing employers instead of becoming an employer himself like what he preaches.Shame

    • the people who put up those statues were NOT artists, they were almost artists but NOT artists,,,,, this should be a wake up call for government, architeture deginers and statue artists (and general artist i,e visual, other kind of artists etc) to draw up laws and regulations to guide the erection of artworks in public areas,,,,, this is my proffesional area,,, and i can safely say Zambia is lacking alot in public artworks,,,,

    • wait a minute, so these things LT is showing are the new statues? If they are – visionless is the right word to describe them in my opinion.

    • @Ndobo I don’t see anything “unZambian” about those statues. Looks like same artist who made the Freedom statue. That is pure Zambian art, which can be compared in Zambian academic literature:
      – Jelita & Mulenga
      – Tambuli & Sitali
      – Shalapo Chani Chandala
And those “graduates” looks like Abana baku Mayandi in Lusaka. Those faces are not from Mangango in Western Province.

    • @Saulosi, how MUCH did your government pay for those “face portraits” of one of your PF ministers’ children?
I would fire entire ministry of Education for wasting money of such.

    • @Nostradamus
hahahahah,,,, zambian touch yes and its important but please marry it with a high level of artistic skil,,,,,
1, why is a male statue standing on a relative higher platform? (they are supposed be on the same level)
2, the statue have no knees,,,and body propotions are incorrect
      3,the feet are strange,
      4, the faces look unyouth
5, the clothes look like big chuckes of meats ,,,
6, and would you put a statues right in front of the billboard???

    • @Ndobo hahahahaha kkkkkkk, ati no knees, especially that PF MP with mustache, he looks like Miles Sampa! These PF awe mwee, ati its contemporary art….
If they really want the renowned Zambian (former) arts *****

    • People need to realize that there is a big difference between motivation speaking and being an entrepreneur. the issue of motivation is just scratching the topic of entrepreneurship on the surface. Zambians let us reduce depending on listen but develop the culture of reading. Make use of the internet effectively to develop self.

    • @chichi:
LOL! No they were not worried – but annoyed! The exams had been leacked and eventually nullified so they were unhappy to resit the exams!!

    • those people who put up `things` were not artist,,,, thats why those `things were cheap and ugly,,,,,, maybe its those boys from ma komboni trying very hard to earn a living!!!

  2. It was money not well spent, probably the person who put up those statues is related to some top man in education. Please next time you want to do the same project hire some who can a good job. Those of you who have visited Russia before you will agree with me that there are people who know to build statues.

    • @JP: You are such an Ar.sewhore with colonial mentality!
This is Zambia in the 21 Century – making a fool of yourself! Do you really have to go all the way to Russia to see a well built statute? There are plenty of them even within Lusaka! How about the Freedom Statute on Independence Avenue which was built in 1974! Is your brain really so rotten whereever you are?
Some of you Zambians are so useless and stu.pid to think that there is nothing good in our country when everything is there!! Lick my ar.se fool!

    • There so many good artists at the visual arts centre in lusaka that can do a better job.You don’t have to look to Russia.

  3. This is very funny, similar to the naming of the Gabon National Disaster Heroes Stadium. Surely there must have been the artist’s impression of the statues before actually erecting them.

  4. ..pulling down of those ‘monsters’ is not enough, there must be an inquiry on how the tender was administered, works approved and paid for…Eeih (the way a Nigerian would exclaim when he sees something strange while holding the back of their head).
Its a shame and scandalous for anyone to append his or her signature to approve the works as having been satisfactory completed….even some-one with squint eyes could have assessed better….

    • …some-one has just informed me or is it misinformed me that it was actually done for free by Evelyn hone students as a final year practical exams. I have known very fine art graduates from Evelyn hone of yesteryear…but if what I was told is true, then I advise Evelyn hone to suspend that section of art till they employ new competent lecturers in that field…But I’m pretty sure that some-one was just pulling my leg.
A challenge for Evelyn hone Art graduates to exculpate themselves

    • …the saddest thing is that the said students graduated with a distinction in practical. Some other Masumbas(MP) on the loose….

  5. An they now lain if they collected refund they paid their pretendng artists, who hired the artist and how was procument done, was it on merit of someone used underhand methods??

  6. Strangely enough, I thought I was the only one who thought they were ugly. I was ashamed of the low standard art of artwork within the country, to say the least.

  7. When are the statues gonna be auctioned?
I want to buy and donate them to Lusaka museum. who hired the artist and how was procument done, was it by open tender or as usual selective tender underhand methods? Someone need to be fired for this idiocy at ECZ. This is total wastage of tax payers money. I rest my case!!!

  8. For a second i thought that that was Nostradamus and Mushota displaying their fake degrees/diplomas Kanshi they are statues hummm, the look humanlike.

  9. Honesty whoever is responsible for erecting those ghastly imitations of art needs to be shot by the firing squad. What an insult to the art faculty.

  10. …plus the power to pull down and rebuild. This story shows that the new generation of Zambians will not settle for cheap quality. They demand quality products because they deserve it. Quality is not achieved by chance, but through skills, experience and precision. Combined with consistency and efforts, you are able to come up with ultimate products like Rolex or Mercedes Benz. Second to none and desired by the masses.

    • so later the same so called “new generation” will have to travel abroad if they are lucky to see the same statues in a museum somewhere in Paris or London like i ended up doing looking for Zambian Art….what a bunch of dunderheads..

  11. NOW GO FOR THE GUY WHO SQUANDERED THE MONEY BY CONTRACTING A NONE QUALIFIED SCULPTOR TO DO THAT UGLY JOB. LIKE ANY CONTRACT BIDS SHOULD BE ISSUED INTERNATIONALLY WHERE SCULPTURES ARE TO BE ERECTED. THERE ARE ONLY A HANDFUL OF SCULPTURES IN ZAMBIA TO WRITE A BOOK ABOUT. THE FREEDOM (Lusaka), MPOSA MABWE (in Kitwe), Dr LIVINGSTONE AND THE 2 ZAMBIANS (in Livingstone). I DON’T KNOW OF ANY OTHERS.

  12. YOU Zambians are very amusing people. How can you even complain about those statues when you have accepted rubbish allover the city. Shame on you all. Mubita please start talking about the shame of having rubbish dumps as your neighbours.

    • @Sunkutu’
      I also agree and I see major issues as and please add;
      (i) Filthy neighbour hoods and towns
(ii) Dust storms and browning of towns despite that most water in region comes from Zambia
(iii) No piped water and sewer treatment (almost all new homes are just flush latrines)

  13. Eish, those ECZ disaster statues are very glum looking with no smile and i’m glad they’re gone just like the “Gabon disater stadium” name.

  14. This is the Zambia we want. The people’s say should carry the day rather than individual arrogance. Boss and management at ECZ, thanks for listening and just put more quality in the statues, its an excellent idea.

  15. I liked the statues, they made you have a second look and you went away with a smile. Great artistic work. Poor ECZ.
