Two Zambian students at Rhodes University in South Africa die in a Canoe accident

Share

Two Zambian students at Rhodes University in South Africa have died in a Canoe accident at Settlers Dam in Eastern Cape.

The two identified as Mr Mohammed Musa and Mr Rizwan Bhayat were in their third academic year of study in Commerce and Pharmacy.

They together with one of their friends rented a boat early Saturday morning at Settlers Dam, which is situated in the Thomas Baines Nature Reserve.

They encountered difficulties in the high wind and the canoe capsized.

Their friend managed to swim ashore and made his way to a neighbouring farm, where he raised the alarm.

He was then taken to Settlers Hospital where he received medical attention and was discharged.

The Acting Vice-Chancellor Dr Mabizela and other senior university officials arrived at the Settlers Dam soon after the alarm was raised on Saturday.

The South African Police Service, the police dog unit and police divers were on the scene until night fall on Saturday, when the search was called off for the day.
The Thomas Baines rangers searched the reserve and neighbouring farms for the students.

Police divers resumed their search on Sunday morning and the bodies of the two students were recovered around 14h10 and 15h55.

Parents and other family members of the two students arrived in Grahamstown on Sunday and were at the Settlers Dam throughout the day as the divers searched for the bodies of their sons.

The senior leadership of the University was there as well to support the two families.

Acting Vice-Chancellor Dr Sizwe Mabizela said. “I wish to record our sincere appreciation to the South African Police Services, their dog unit and their diving team for the professional manner in which they carried out the search for the two students.”

“I also wish to acknowledge with thanks and appreciation the support provided to the surviving student by Mr and Mrs Macleod, whose farm lies adjacent to the Thomas Baines Nature Reserve. On behalf of Rhodes University, I extend our deepest condolences to the families and friends of the deceased.”

    • mohammed musa and Rizwan Bhayat!!!,,,,, these must indians(mwenyez) born in Zambia NOT Zambians,,,,, anyway rest in peace, whatever your nationality is

    • @Ndobo, why why why discriminate even after death? It is sad to those boys. Lets see what the PF ministers are made off.

    • i would say they are zedians why discriminate when someone has a zambian passport he/she is zambian white or black!!! RIP

    • @ndobo, it’s not your skin or name that makes you Zambian. Ask your nephew to teach u some Grade 8 civics on citizenship

    • I have always known Ndobo has nothing between the ears. This just cements my belief. Africans respect the dead-sometimes even more than those alive. They rarely say stoopid things about dead people. The fact is in the modern world people are citizens of the country they have chosen or are born in. All right thinking people know this.

  1. It is so dangerous to go on such adventures especially if you do not know how to swim, reminds me of a Zambian girl who died when she went skiing in Lapland region of Finland. Please Zambians stay away from these adventures you have not been brought up with. May their souls rest in peace!

  2. Come on Lusaka times, you mean you have no more news for our hungry appetites for “Breaking News”?

  3. It’s as simple as this, if you do not know how to swim, stay away from deep waters. Besides, it’s a requirement that when people venture into dams like these, they need life vests, and it would appear these chaps did not have any otherwise they would have remained afloat to steer themselves to the shoreline. It’s sad but Murphy’s Law is Murphy’s Law.

  4. @ Ndobo…typical asshole jerk clown as usual doin the opposite by farting from the mouth. Are you goin to say Jesus is not Zambian bcoz he is a “jew” or rather a muzungu???Get a life son a*** tryn to play the race card in the 21st century..///

  5. so sad my son confirms this from the same university but where did they the learn fishing and swimming in Zambia.they are not from luapula MTSRIP

  6. @Nubian Princess it was Allah who was not there! Jesus is always waiting for you when you need him! He says ‘Ask and you will be given…..’ May our Dear Lord bless their poor souls!

  7. So called Zambians of Asian origin those from the Indian sub-continent to be specific have no loyalty to the African countries they reside in but simply there to exploit and make money. Many of these Asian families have multiple passports and when they have made enough they will send their kids abroad just like the two who have died. They see us the owners ( blacks) as inferior even though they will not mention it openly and that is why they never even integrate fully in the communities they live. The live in their own communities and marry amongst themselves despite been here for than 100 years. They might have intimacy with Zambian girls but never marry them on the other hand they will never allow their girls or women near Zambian boys.

    • Good show man, very good. You have hit it out of the field. ni homerun iyi yena!! Even petersen zagaze sang about this in his song “ma offals”.They never intergrate into the zambian society and prefer to marry themselves even though they are few.why do you think it is so prominent amongst the indian community in zambia to see children with down syndrome.almost every indian family has one such child.back in those days i would hear people say ati emo bapandila but now i know better.it is inbreeding that causes such genetic breakdown in their children. they would rather marry their own cousin, sister than take an african wife or husband.why do they do this? yet it is convenient for them to abuse our girls but never marry them.even paul ngozi sang about this in his song “half mwenye”

  8. @ mulondwe muzungu in the eyes of GOD we are all equal! your comment is so disappointing & boarders on racism. This is 2014 for crying out loud….wake up!

    • but Mulondwe Muzungu is right!! The racists in this case are the socalled Zambians of Asian origin. When I become President I will deport all these racists back India.

    • great one- mulondwe has hammered thi point well enough. dont cry racism when it is evidnt for you to see. what is with you brothers and sisters that you always want to justify other peoples unjust deeds against your own, but are ever so quick to condemn your own brother who tells or brings you the truth. show me a mwenye who has married a black woman in zambia. very few if any. And dont tell me about namakau jayetileke, the husband was made an outcast probably thats why ne chupo chalipwa!!!!! infact that guy is from mdadgascar or something.
But go in town or arcades, manda hill and see how these arabs (palestinians, jordanians etc), indians play around with our girls but dump them to go back home to wherever and marry their own. the girl is not even told ati naya. its not racism, its fact

    • Let me tell you f….. And B …….of charcoal Black pigment and claim to be zsmbians because you are so dull and ignorant of been black that you can talk about these two indians whose familys have done so much for this country .never judge people you f……racists.

  9. @mulondwe muzungu

That’s why you will always stay in the cave you come from. Come to Manda Hill, Lusaka and Arcades on Saturdays and Sundays and you will see many of these Indians with their indigenous Zambian wives and coloured children.

And about sending their children abroad, go and ask how many current ministers’ and ex-ministers’ children are studying and have settled abroad using your (taxpayer’s) money.

Go back under the rock you came from

    • Hmmm, kwisa, which manda hill and arcades are you talking about. ama coloreds yes with white people. bugah ena alopa abanakshi besu, but ba mwenye kwisa? dont cheat here!!!!

    • which manda hill, wilabepa ubufi apa. take pictures and show me. they can make our girls pregnant kaili our girls know imisango shabo. so how do you trap the guy, have his baby. but when they say, marry, they refuse. so they might be responsible for the kids providing child support but to marry wailasha!!! chakana. I know of a ticklay in libala, their father is ticklay and he supports his colored children by buying or renting a house in libala stage two and visits them evry week or day, but never married the woman. why? as rich as ticklay is, why couldnt he buy the mother of his children a house evn in olympia or roma. He was trapped and libala is the best he could do. the evidence is all there. now give me yours!!!

  10. Sad. These lads were Zambian’s, irrespective of colour or creed.
Some of You so called Zambians, should be careful with your child like comments.
You are the first to scream Blue Murder, when people in countries you reside, unleash racist attitudes towards you. Grow Up!!
    Ndobo Wamvela!??

  11. Safety First. before you undertake any adventure carry out a Risk Assessment or Analysis to identify Hazards associated with such a task. mitigate the Hazards and proceed with your Task. in this case if you are going into the water, you should know that drowning is a major danger there so you should either be a good swimmer or wear life jackets simple. Dont just do it coz everyone is doing it.

    • I think its you racists who need to go to congo where your ancestors came from.you are know more zedians than the indians and musungus born in zed.too much kaponya and cadre mentallity in this country. We need to progress as 50 yrs is alot of years for comments coming from black people. Its a real shame how black people think.

    • ( Guest )These Indians will never accept you as an equal ! go to Zambia and see how they treat our people like second class citizens in our own country ! it’s just a matter of time they will get what’s coming to them!

  12. To the people who have commented here.

At the person that says Allah was not there and Jesus would have saved them. People die all the time. Irrespective of which God they believe in or don’t believe in.

Don’t pass judgment about how Zambian they are. They were born and bred in Zambia and I know this because I know them.

They can swim. I know them.

This tragedy breaks me because I personally knew Rizwan very well and he was the most beautiful person I knew. He had an old soul, a pure heart and a beautiful smile. He loved nature and he was a quiet, beautiful, beautiful person.

I never knew Muhammad Amin personally but always saw him around Grahamstown. One word to describe him – ‘smile’. He was always smiling.

May Allah grant them Jannah inshallah. They were young but…
