Glasgow wrap: Mupopo bows out, Muziyo, Kombe advance

Share

Boxer Ben Muziyo lifted Zambia’s fading medal hopes at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Monday night after winning his last 16 Middleweight bout on the night all-rounder Kabange Mupopo faded in her 400 meters semifinal heat.

Zambia’s last man standing in the ring defeated Canadian Brody Blair via 3rd round technical knockout.

Muziyo will now face Cedric Olivier of Mauritius in the Wednesday’s quarterfinals at 22h15.

His victory came after compatriot Bwalya Lumbwe lost 3-0 to Fazil Kaggwa of Uganda in a last 16 Flyweight contest on the same date.

Meanwhile on the track, Mupopo finished sixth in heat one of the 400 meters semifinals to bow out at Glasgow in the Shepolopolo captain’s first major world tournament outing six months after adding track and field to her résumé.

However, Saviour Kombe has a chance to redeem some hope in the 400 meters mens semifinals this evening when he takes to the track in heat three at 21h18.

Kombe advanced to the semifinals after finishing third in Monday’s first round in heat seven.

  1. How many peple did we send if we speaking of one two three people. We need to send many in different fields

    • Congrats to Benny. I don’t know him personally but I had an obligation to support him by virtue of my Zambian citizenship. Thanks to a few Nigerians,Basotho, SA, Kenyan who supported every African boxer. The usually large number of our entourage just sat with legs crossed and watched. Icipale naku ma games just to gets daily allowances. The organisers of the games look after the athletes and just a coach per game category and one delegation leader are enough. We could save money as a country.

  2. I saw Mupopo run 400m, she is talented but lack techniques. She runs as if she is being chased by a snake. Anywz Com-wth is about participation esp for Zambia. We just want to attend… ‘i was there mwana’…

  3. Abena Zambia kwena mwaliwana, nomba pantu tamubutuka!
Zambia should just focus on football. It is a waste of resources sending our poorly trained athletes to international games. The problem is that you chaps think you can go to international games and bribe your way to a medal, like you do in Zambia. Mineni amate mwikale tondolo.

  4. There is talent in Zambia. All that is needed is proper grooming of these young athletes. We need serious sports administrators for this not the current crop of failures who only fight for traveling allowances.

  5. Mupopo started with steam but lost her power in the last 100 meters.Where is Samuel Matete? I think should invest more in this track and field athletes than football. The Zambian lady lost it even before she started running during the introductions and when her name and country was called, she lacked self confidence.Chishimba Kambwili this were you should churn out your tantrums on sport administrators not Ethiopians referees. We want to see more of the Ngolwes,Simunkos,Moscows,Mwandesas of 1980s that we used to watch at inter schools at Nkana,Kafuba and Independence stadiums being reflected in the youth of today. These that I have mentioned above and others not mentioned here were student at secondary schools and colleges who represented the country well at international level and won medals

    • It is a mistake technically to start with steam when you are in a 400 meters race. Mupopo started with great speed as if she was in a 100 meters race only to get exhausted after covering 300 meters. I don’t blame her because she delayed to start as she forgot to start by the sound of the whistle.

  6. As Samuel Matete had pointed out, you need several months to train for events of that magnitude. Looking at Mupopo, you can see that the lady has what it takes to compete up there with the best. What she needs is probably a scholarship especially in the USA and be exposed to world class coaches. She starts at lightning pace, which is a good attribute, but the pace fades down in the last 50m or so. Those with connections need to connect this young lady to some USA universities.

  7. We need the likes Matete to be the chairman as he has the experience of competing at higher level. We have the same chairman for years who only brags of taking his girlfriend with him ” at own expenses “

  8. great to muziyo the boy has passion fo the game but am really dispointed . there alot nid to happen Zambia is sports nation bt we ve no leaders to support shame. like boxers those loose were luck of many things
