First Republican President Kenneth Kaunda

FORMER President Kenneth Kaunda says the greatest achievement he made during his time as head of State was to peacefully build a united Zambia and hopes Zambians will continue on the same path.

Dr Kaunda said in an interview in Lusaka yesterday that Zambia’s 50 years of independence have been of growth in word, deeds and thoughts and Zambians should use the golden jubilee to further foster peace, unity and growth.

He said this shortly after lunch hosted for him by his first son Panji, who is also Deputy Minister of Transport, Works, Supply and Communications, Ministry of Foreign Affairs permanent secretary George Zulu and businessman Gershom Musonda.

“There is nothing that can be more important than the peace, growth and unity this country has achieved. This is one of my greatest achievements and we should continue to love one another, build and unite our country,” Dr Kaunda said.

He said the golden jubilee celebrations should be a reflection to citizens that Zambia has developed genuine peace and unity.

Dr Kaunda urged Zambians to believe and appreciate God for the peace the country has enjoyed since its independence.

“We have built our country peacefully from the time we took over, when the British flag came down and our flag went up and the British Government through the Queen sent a representative to show how serious they were to hand over power to Zambia,” he said.

Dr Kaunda said since independence, Zambia has developed peacefully and this can be seen from the peaceful transition of power from one head of State to another.

He said the transition of power from one president to another shows that Zambia is ready to move from one stage to another and that the peaceful change from one leader to the other is a good lesson to other countries as well.

Dr Kaunda said Zambians should strive to strengthen the peace and development which has been achieved so far because it is immeasurable.

“We have to thank God for this and Zambians for standing together in peace and harmony. Please continue to build Zambia in this wonderful way,” he said.

Dr Kaunda said Zambia was built into one country out of 73 tribes through the Biblical 10 Commandments.

  1. But then why are you supporting Sata whose Gvt and Cabinet are dominated by people from only certain parts of Zambia ?

    • Folks.

I have said it numerous times that SATA IS DEAD. He died in June.

To confirm that my statement is true, SATA will not appear in public during the 50th independence anniversary. The PF will cook up something and flash fake photos saying the president wishes all Zambians well during the celebrations.

Several scenarios will unfold as the PF try hard to cover up the fact that SATA IS DEAD
To avoid the embarrassment PF may lie and claim to have quickly evacuated the president out of Zambia for emergency medical treatment and will be posting messages to inform Zambians of his progress.

Another possibility is that for the first time they may admit that SATA is unable to attend the 50th independence celebrations due to minor affliction which will clear in a short time…

    • @1.1 Mushota – Because Mr Sata was a cop during colonial days and is now undoing the unifying work that KK did. Got that!

    • @Nubian, don’t forget Mwanawasa, the man was very educated, he had a plan and was very fair, he had his issues probably, but i rate him third. 1) Kaunda 2) Chiluba 3) Mwanawasa….The rest niba chabe chabe…

    • Indeed Dr Kaunda. ONE ZAMBIA, ONE NATION. That was great and inspirational. No petty politics and selfish motives should separate us but we should be resolute enough to have a system that flushes out those who will champion causes of division.

    • @Wanzelu

The ZWD has just reported that Sata is fit and alive and itching to get to Mangango and infuse life in the campaigns.

    • Here are ratings for Zambian presidents.

      KK 35% Good 65% Evil.
      FTJ 40% Good 60% Evil.
      LPM 90% Good 10% Evil.
      MCS 10% Good 90% Evil.

There you have it. A complete comparative analysis.

    • # Rotten teeth, you are really rotten man because you are blind to reality.Sata is building roads, universities, schools and other infrustracture. What more do you want? What is development on your own little rotten mind?Give thanks where itis due with condemn where needs be.!!

    • When Sata decided that he was going to run for Republican President of Zambia Doctor Kaunda was asked to give his opinion about Sata and he told us point blank that although Sata he’s Harding working, he cannot make a good president. Did we listen to him?? No, we went ahead and voted for him anyway. so what do you want him to do?? this is the man who was Sata’s boss for many years, gave his opinion and you chose to ignore. Leave Dr Kaunda alone. Thank you

    • Is there any peace, growth and unity under PF/Micheal sata? Dictatorial tendencies, can heavy tribal appointments bring peace, growth and unity in Zambia? Isukulu yalibabwino. whether certain sections of zambia like it or not, they are natural thieves and belong to the generation of *****s

    • Stup!d old man, you are really an ID!0T.

It was your nonsense with one party state that has now allowed Chiluba and Satas corruption to happen! You laid the foundation for all this SH!T now happening in Zambia.

And YOU bankrupted the country. Zambians are poor now because of your ignorance and megalomania.

Better just keep your mouth shut.

    • KK never practised tribalism, infact he encouraged integration. In his days, a civil servant could not get a promotion in his/her home town. the promotion came with a condition of relocation-this encouraged inter marraiges, which is a major force in our stability/peace

    • @advocate:
Kekeke! Very true! It’s through the transfers that Bemba women fell for the Tonga men and loved them so much in bed that they called them Tonga Bulls!
Even now, the Bemba women love that T-bone stick which they cant get from the ever soft Bemba boys! Kanshi ni Viva KK waletele ifibote!

    • kkkkkkk, Ka Chilyata waliba funny ai, ati T-bone. Bembas ni ndeke mwana. Until the destination is found there are no funny lay bys and slow downs.

  2. Your excellency what you saying is history.Your predecessors namely Kafupi and Sata have divided this nation. There is no more One Zambia One Nation. It’s all about the ba bemba speaking. If you try to challenge them, they will scream the loudest that you are tribal.
A nation of 15 million yet the cabinet ,govt. departments, parastatals and diplomatic missions are 95% dominated by the northerners.
WHY KK HAVE YOU ALLOWED THIS?

    • Guys please share with us where you get these statistics. In my opinion most Zambians don’t really care what tribe you are, politically we will flirt with it. But true it’s a dangerous Game and politicians should stop using tribalism to gain short term popularity. At the end of the day we have so many intermarriages its almost impossible for one to be purely from one tribe. I’m sure Mr Red square if we mate in a bar and I told you I was Bemba you would have no problem whatsoever getting along with me. That is what the big man KK has achieved and it should be praised and preserved.

    • @Pa Zed
Only a week or two ago, someone published (on ZWD) a whole list Govt appointments from Cabinet, to permanent secretaries, foreign missions and Parastatals. And iIndeed it was over 95% (If not more) either Bemba speaking or from Northern and Muchinga provinces.
You should also recognise that a few Zambians are now “enlightened” and intelligent enough to see through this. They will pick up such abnomalities and rightly question them. Therefore dont blame those questioning what appears as outright tribalist regime, but open your eyes and condemn the leadership who are practicing such blatant tribal politics and giving rise to the scrouge. Unless of course you are of the view that these people are the best we have and therefore are appointed on merit?

    • We should never forget Mwanawasa’s family tree just because he is dead. Of course Sata has taken the family tree to another level – the family forest.

  3. @Red Square u r lying FTJ has NEVER DIVIDED us. Look at his Cabinet. I remember Ministers like Ben Mwiinga whose name Ben Mwiinga Complex(PHI) is named after.
ALSO LOOK at the parastatals other tribes were included too even Judiciary people like Ngulube, Sakala and so forth.
SATA is the one who has spoiled ths COUNTRY and DEMONS WONT LET him. He will go in history as a MOST USELESS HEAD OF STATE- (think the MAJOR REASON IS SATA sanayende ku sikulu-Grade7 &his Brain is dysfuctional).

KK is INDIRECTLY TRYING TO TELL SATA tht he is dig a ditch for himself.

    • Sata is history,he got his tribesmen but the dangerous game is being played by the cartel, why do we have machete welding pf cadres active?Zambia ‘s current threat is kabimba and mmembe.kk you did your best, thanks alot.

  4. Even Houphouet Boigny of Ivory Coast,Arap Moi -kenya and Mobutu of Zaire also built “peaceful, united countries” too but look what happened to those nations after them. The absence of war doesn’t mean there’s peace, bwana KK.

  5. KK can eat my feces any day. the man is a hypocrite. hiding behind enemy lines. i am your future people. i can make you poor and you wont even notice it while i am resting on my private island with white beach sand between my toes

  6. We have no right to criticize this man. No man doesn’t have failures. As for those. Asking him to help remove sata, my frends do it yourselves.

    • kk no failures? From inheriting one of the richest economies in the whole developing world and turning it into one of the poorest with the biggest per capita debt in the world and you say the man has no failures? He concentrated power in himself and up to today Fyonko Fyonko has never apologised for the excesses of his rule and still thinks that he should still be in state house hence his willingness to undertake some the ailing Ukwa Katongo Charles Kays’ duties.

  7. KK must also tell us about the atrocities he carried out on his own people he claims to have united – in the State House tunnels that FTJ revealed on ZNBC. KK is evil itself!

    • Tunnels are a security measure and not an atrocity. kindly explain how digging a tunnel turns into an atrocity. let us analyze issues and not get brainwashed by TV

  8. Kaunda must apologise to people of Barotseland who he shafted and enslaved with the help of the treacherous Wina brothers.

  9. Its easy to envision a peaceful and happy marriage but when u get in it,the reality starts, you wonder is this what I wanted, but with hope and instinct guide one passes and later realize its past 40 years with the same spouse.no marriage is perfect and no president who didn’t commit some wrong judgment ,the pride of an old couple lies in the well being of their children and the grandkids, the pride of Zambians lay in the NO shots fired against another tribe and the unprecedented intermarriages, mutale phiri, hakaundu mwila, nyambe nyirongo ……etc.am proud of kk and his team.sata is a let down.

  10. KK, people may only be united by their free will. You do not unite people by force, just like you forced Barotse Government into Northern Rhodesia: Are Baris Muziba, Nayoto Mwenda and Sikwibele Wasilota now languishing in Kaoma prison really united into Zambia. You have been quiet. Why are you not speaking for the freedom of these youths who are bfighting for true democracy: government of the people, by the people and for the people, KK?

    • People, especially in the developing world, can never unite by free will. Libya, Iraq, Egypt, Sudan (just to mention a few) , were united by “tough guys” after the people got the “independence/democracy” that they craved for they are now disunited. People never here never unite by free will, so that democracy needs to be guided by hard core presidents.

  11. All I remember about KK’s era is long queues for basic food stuffs and essentials, brutal police and paramilitary cops who at the slightest drop of a kid’s hat, they would pounce and really go to town pounding you like you were state enemy number one, long endless speeches about man west and east, businesses grinding to a stop to if KK is travelling to the airport, non-stop front page news of KK on radio, tv, newspapers everyday even when he is overseas for weeks, his savage vigilantes who had no respect even for women and elderly people. The list endless and there’s nothing flattering on this list. I am still traumatised by his unbelievable fiendish leadership.

  12. For sure KK was the only president who united Zambia. He did not see tribe. His slogan was one zambia one nation. Chiluba also tried though he was bent towards his tribe. Mwanawasa started the family tree. RB was more inclined towards his people as he often listened to his Ngoni chiefs. However the master of all is the tribalist Sata. He has perfected tribalism by having a family tree supported by his tribesmen.

    • KK was not a tribalist because he did not have a tribe in Zambia. But, his quest for unity alone was not enough. The unity slogan was meant to wrestle power from the people unto himself. Slogan was for his self preservation, since he did not have his own tribal electoral college. We equally needed diverty. People need freedom and free will and discretion to decide their destiny at all levels of the society, starting from the smallest political units, the indivuduals, families, clans, communities, societies, nations, states, through to the country level. Power should not only be wielded at State House! Nature does not only keep brains at State House. There is always need for collective and diverse efforts. KK denied this from the people of Zambia: roads, hospitals, schools, Yes!

    • Yes, simply because he did not belong to a tribe in Zambia. It was just coincidental: not that it was on account of his own inherent effort: bring an expatriate President and there will no tribalism! The thing is leaders must find a way of balancing unity and diversity – those who can’t balance this equation should not seek the highest political Office.

  13. …thank you for that and we really appreciate…..But every coin has two faces…I wished we could have been told of the greatest failure as well.
If Hitler was alive today, he would have probably said the same statement. So will Nyerere, Mugabe, Mobutu, Kamuzu, Bokassa, Kim Jong-un….the same statement can be attributed to Mandela, George Washington, Namibian Nujoma, Churchill, what matters is the environment at which that peace is achieved. Recently, a leader executed his Uncle in the name of ‘maintaining peace’…..

  14. Before you write to condem some one, analys the system first. when one party participatory system paved way for a muiltyparty system, which you zambians cried for , almost all political parties formed apart from MMD, where formed along tribal lines PF inclusive. Examples are AZ agenda for Zambia by my Mr. Mbikusita, ULP etc. When MMD was defeated, PF took over with the mojority of the members of parliament from the North, Luapula Copperbelt, central, muchinga, Lusaka and few from western. No seats from southern, eastern and north western provinces. Our constitution does not allow appointment of a minister from outside parliament. If Mr. Hichilema was to ascend to presidence to day, who can dominate Cabinet? Let us all be ready to join any political party to avoid bleming our leaders.

  15. pipo who say the pf gvt practices tribalism are themselves very divisive and tribal. 4 me evn its one zambia one nation.wether all ministers ar bembas or tongas its fine as long as they ar zambians.u shud realise that tribalism starts wen u start feeling that yo tribe shud be represented in gvt at all cost or that yo tribesman shud rule zambia at all cost.if u r not tribal stop mentioning tribes and advocate for quality leadership only

  16. President Kaunda is internationally respected and appreciated by Zambians. His one party state was justified as Zambia has too many tribes and the current tribal violent fractions prove that it was a good model to start with. His motto/ethos One Zambia One Nation was people ‘binding.’ Wantanshi, disagree with your critic on the nature of the difficulties later in KK’s rule. He had no hand in some causes primarily; 1). Declaring Zambia a Frontline state to assist, Zim & SA was necessary for our economic future that caused, border closure and attacks from the 2. 2). Oil loans dumped on many African states lead to the economisc hardship.
Ray Ray, concur on rating Kaunda at 1) and Mwanawasa at 2). Disagree Chiluba should ever rope in anywhere because of the grotesque thieving in…

    • Tribalism is cronyism or nepotism practised according tribe. E.g the appointment of 99.1% Bemba tribe speaking group to head all foreign missions abroad , cabinet , government departments and parastatals.

      PF is practising tribalism.

  17. @ Wantanshi, I also witnessed things you have outlined about KK’s rule. But I think these phenomena were forced through KK”s throat by uncontrolled circumstances. Remember that from 1964, KK truely built a united Zambia and his one Zambia one nation motto was unique in uniting tribes. The economic melt down that Zambia began to experience by late 1970s had a bearing on some draconian actions KK resorted to in order to protect the sovereignty. Even when we rose against him in the early 90s the economic factor was more pricking. He humbly bowed out of power and handed it over to FTJ. Infact he cut short his presidency by two years, a gesture of unparalleled humility and christian upbringing.

  19. I think the best way to assess a successful rule; is to ask fundamental questions on the ‘inner persons well being.’ Zambians have a strong sense of their Zambian heritage, fostered by a cohesive induction into a free state. We had a good start, the 60’s to early
70s was good. Good schools, access to good standard housing. The council house model in Kabwata, Chilenje are still standing today. Our parents were able to scale job levels not on tribal grounds, but from the equality and ability to access and succeed if you directed yourself well. Were people happy and proud to be Zambians? Yes, we sing it in our national anthem. Chiluba was the catalyst to breakdown of Zambia. A silent overly intellectual imp that stole and stole. Mwanawasa was a return to good Gov’t.

  20. I bow down to you sir
You have earned my love and respect.
My wonderful youth. I THANK to you.
I still think back of my friends that once were….

  21. Please spare Chiluba on tribalism. The guy was tribal blind. Look at his appointments.

Guy Scott, Suresh Desai, Dipak Patel, Simon Zukas, Stan Kristafol, Syacheye Madyenkuku, Benny Mwiinga, Patrick Kafumukache, Syamukayumbu Syamujaye, Kabunda Kayongo, Levy Mwanawasa, Ronald Penza
Sikota Wina, Princess Nakatindi Wina, General Christon Tembo, Brig. Gen. Godfrey Miyanda, Paul Tembo, Michael Mabenga, Edith Nawakwi, Ronny Shikapwasha, Katele Kalumba, Peter Machungwa, Dan Pule, Earnest Mwansa, Eric Silwamba, Peter Chintala, Kaunda Lembalemba, David Saviye, Bert Mushala, Vernon Mwaanga, Michael Sata etc

You had other constitutional holders like Mukelebai Mukelebai…. etc. His only issue was power struggle drbbling. This was regardless of who was involved. SATA WAS DRIBBLED PA LAST.

  22. Why do we keep parading old people in our country?? its like these are the only worthy citizens on planet Zambia.
We need the constitution not hot air from someone who highhandedly destroyed the economy of Zambia

  23. Thanks KK .. we now need a pure zambian like LPM. We tired of being colonised by Congolese, Malawians and now Tanzanians. Please vote for a zambian, you all saw what happened the last time a zambian ruled zambia.

  24. Tongas are very accomodating and not tribal. We have Nyanjas from the east who run Shops in Southern province including villages. Other tribes have been given land to live among us. Now when KK was arrested and jailed in 1959 Tongas were not selfish to give powers back after his release. Tongas are the most intermarriaged Folks in Zambia. You will find child who half Kaluvale, Kaonde, Bemba, Bisa Sata´s tribe etc. My favorite President is Mwanawasa because politically he had a good Image and he revived the National Development Plan that Kaunda started. KK Comes second on his 11th hour he failed to control his Boyz who rooted the economy. That led him to have bad Image.

    • @ 29 Easyman, I think most tribes are very accommodating including your pet hate Bembas. My experience is that Bembas inter marry a lot and are very sociable. This Bemba -Tonga hatred has been created by politics; namely PF and UPND. Coming to other tribes running shops and living in Southern province, the trend is the same everywhere. Having said that, Southern province is more urban than say Luapula and therefore it goes without saying that it will be more metropolitan – that’s just how it is mate.

  26. Chikwanda @ 32, I never said an tribal tag here I was just discribing how accomdating Tongas are despite being leballed tribalists. But the fact is today Zambia is ruled by one Group of People from Cannana so called Muchinga Province. Remember the Leader tried to do what God did to exalt a Group of People but he forgot that he is just flesh and messy up things. Now the same things are Messing him up such that he cannot appear in Public anymore.

  27. From the look of things most bloggers live out side Zambia going by the flags. Could stop confusing peace loving Zambians who live with every Zambian as a brother and sister regardless of which place one comes from. It is primitivity to dwell on tribes something one has no control about. We are all created in the immage of God period.

  28. Dear Former President Kaunda, your memory must be failing due to old age. As a president, you shed more innocent blood than any other Zambian president. During your 27 years of misrule, most Zambians lived under constant fear. By definition, you were a dictator. You imposed yourself on the Zambian people against their will.

What you left behind was a Zambia that was fractured and divided along tribal lines. Indeed, your style of rule was divide and rule. Unfortunately, the peaceful Zambia you claim to have created, only existed in your head.

At independence, you had inherited a country that was the richest in Africa, north of the Limpopo river. By the time Zambians got tired of you and bundled you out of power, Zambia had become one of the poorest in Africa.
