Government says the re-introduction of arts subjects in all school across the country will encourage creativity among pupils.

Tourism and Arts Minister Jean Kapata said the reintroduction of arts subjects such as needlework and home craft is an excellent way of preserving the country’s heritage.

Ms. Kapata made the call after a Tapestry Exhibition held at the Parliament Buildings in Edinburg, Scotland.

ZANIS reports that the tourism minister said this in a statement released in Lusaka, today.

Ms. Kapata was in Scotland where she was attending the Second Edinburg International Cultural Summit which ran from the 9th to August 14 2014.

The Minister added that arts subject area also a productive and creative way of bringing up the youths in the country.

And Ms. Kapata has called on Zambian tour operators to partner with the Scottish counterparts to develop tour packages targeting routes undertaken by late Scottish explorer David Livingstone.

Ms. Kapata sentiments come after a group of tourists, scholars and history students decided to embark on an exploration of retracing the trips made by David Livingstone.

  1. DR phiri help our education system or else zambian will lose faith in educated pipo. we had prof lungwangwa now you. surely the ministry shud move with pipo like you on the driving seat. talk about automatic progression and leav art to only pupils with intrest and talent

  2. How else then do you determine whether a pupil has talent in art or any subject other than by exposing them to the discipline?

  3. please ba government should surely know that its not just a matter of re-introducing the arts in school but remordenizing the whole art industry in zed, making it marketable, profitable and a want to be in industry. the talent is plenty but lacks motivations. this re-introductions just means children will take art at school, then what after high school? i have seen many people who are good at art but dare not to take up art as a carrier, otherwise, they will starve to death cause the industry is not taken serious. instead of just making re-introductions, lets put in incentives after school as well, it time we started to bleed new Henry Tayali(s)

    • Thank you backbencher. The country’s laws around art need to be strengthened and supported by enforcement. If I do a piece of artwork I should know that the Zambian Police will help protect my copyright. They wont allow piracy to reap where it hasn’t sown. If am an investor in the arts industry I need to know how the govt will assist me through its laws to plan for a profitable venture.

  4. I studied at one of Uk’s Art Universities having never taken art as a subject in my childhood. I discovered, amazing talent I didn’t Know I had. I continue to take art classes to develop my talent along with my Digital Media studies. It opened so much expressive abilities and I have created some design work for various projects I am turning into a business enterprise. There is so much potential to create a lucrative creative industry for Zambia from this. Promoting arts in Zambia will open up a world market, if the government fund programmes. This is a good and positive direction, but we should not be depending on Scotland!
