The District Development Coordinating Committee (DDCC) in Kaputa has demanded punitive action on Kawanzane Contractors who has allegedly abandoned work to construct a maternity annex at Kaputa District Hospital.

The DDCC leant during a meeting last week that the contractor has ‘abandoned’ the works and has not been seen on site since February, this year.

The stakeholders complained that this was despite government paying over 50 per cent of the contract sum for the project.

The DDCC members expressed concern that if no action was taken against the contractor, the project was likely to stall for years.

The project to construct the maternity annex was awarded to Kawanzane, a Zambian contractor in 2005, but the works are still uncompleted.

The DDCC members appealed to government to find a serious contractor to complete the remaining works in time.

District Administrative Officer, Alick Kampamba, said his office was also seriously concerned on the quality of works done on the structure so far.

“Before the building is even handed over, the roofs are already leaking. This just goes to tell the calibre of this contractor,’’ he said.

Government has so far paid K298, 493 out of the K432, 623 for the whole project to Kawanzane Contractors for the maternity annex at the hospital.

  1. This matter should be taken very seriously. The contractor is depriving the rural people of better maternity facilities.
Why cant the contractor be charged and blacklisted? It was my view that such works involving signing contracts of some sort. And I believe one of the terms of such contracts would be the completion date and quality of works.
Our ministry of works should be serious. This is tax payers’ money that is being wasted and the rural folk are the ones paying the price. I have come to observe that in Zambia we have a laissez-faire approach to everything, even important activities like the one we have read above. The govt simply pays the contractor and hopes things work themselves out. We should audit these projects and any contractor found wanting should be blacklisted.

  2. Of course, the contractor given the job was pf, more money in his pocket. What did you expect? There are a few pf cadres who are trying their best to finish the works, though

  3. malabishi project . constructing a simple wing from 2005 to date and people are watching where have been the grz people who monitor projects this country will not develop

  4. Name and shame the company owners. Then they should be prosecuted accordingly. The cost of any remedial repairs or corrections must be attributed to said contractor and any breach of obligations and agreements must incur fines and blacklisting at companies registry of the people and company name. This is deprivation, exploitation and pure theft.

  5. LMAO!!! No President! No order in the country. AUTO PILOT. Ministers are busy looting and everyone is joining in………………

  6. Even the project amount tells it all. Its too small for hospital facility wing i wonder the specifications. Cheap is expensive people are constructing homes for k900,000.00 even nhs houses are more expensive than that hospital wing, the contractor cant afford for such an area where i think even materials like stones and are bought from kasama . But anyway he asked for the job at that price and must pay back or build the hospital otherwise the right hand of the law shud follow

    • What happens is this, the insiders (chaps who award jobs) will tip the contractor(of course their friend) and advise that contractors tender figure is this much and the foolish contractor submits a tender as advised! without doing PROPER pricing! End result the chaps take their cut and the foolish contractor abandons project mid way the contraction period ! Sometimes I wonder what NCC, SIZ, EIZ name them …all this rubbish should not be happening. All Presidents, CEO, whatever their names should step-down…may be new brooms will sweep better, may be!

  7. WE NEED MORE DETAILS , THEIR IS NO WAY A MATERNATY WARD CAN TAKE FROM 2005 TO DATE TO COMPLETE, THE CONTRACTOR HAS HIS OWN REASONS TOO, ZAMBIANS DONT WANT TO PROMOTE FELLOW CITIZENS DEFINATELY THE CONTRACTOR WAS NOT PAID AND HE HAS USED HIS ON RESOURCES FOR A LONG TIME , DONT TELL ME THAT HE CAN FAIL TO BUILT A KA SIMPLE MATERNATY HUT

  8. ……..from 2005 (or its a misprint) for just an annex of the building…??…The article is one sided making it invalid to give a constructive comment….I hope the DA is qualified enough to give professional assessment……usually incomplete jobs at times deceptively give wrong/horrible impression
…may be the DDCC & the DA just wanted to show that they are working and to ‘make’ news…..how do u go to work site and enquire from the maid to explain what is going on (see picture)..?? u don’t even make an attempt to contact the contractor or the site engineer on govt side…??

  9. No wonder contracts are going to the Chinese. Zambians please let’s be serious. Police charge with bugger with theft and prosecute him so he can cool his heels in jail. It’s about time people learned to be serious.
