Government has launched the first ever Mobile telecommunication solar charger in the country.

Speaking during the launch in Lusaka yesterday, Mines, Energy and Water development Minister Christopher Yaluma said the project will help Zambians have access to affordable phone charging solution regardless of location.

Mr Yaluma noted that in the past years people have always been looking for alternative energy sources that are both cheaper and friendly to the global environment.

In a speech read on his behalf by Acting Assistant Manager in the Department of Energy Arnold Simwaba, Mr Yaluma praised the World Panel Incorporation of USA for launching the project in Zambia.

He stated that the Introduction of the Solar Mobile Charger will help bring about an inclusive society in which everyone will have an opportunity to have access to renewable source of energy.

Mr Yaluma further added that the solar mobile charger will afford Zambians particularly those that are not connected to the national electricity grid an opportunity to charge their phones and always stay connected.

Meanwhile, World Panel Zambia limited Executive Director Jacob Sikazwe said he is delighted by Government’s efforts of partnering with the private sector in ensuring that Zambia becomes a choice investment destination.

Mr Sikazwe also paid tribute to COMESA and the American Embassy for the support rendered toward the successful launch of the Solar Panel Charging solution.

And solar expert and entrepreneur John Anderson said his passion through the project is aimed at empowering people especially those in rural areas as the charger is meant for people who have challenges accessing electricity.

    • THIS IS WHAT I COMPLAIN ABOUT WITH ZAMBIAN JOURNALISM. IT’S SO POOR EVEN THE OBVIOUS THINGS OUR JOURNALISTS DON’T JUST KNOW. MORE OFTEN THAN NOT YOU EVEN HAVE UN ANNOTATED IMAGES IF THAT DAY THE READERSHIP IS LUCKY TO HAVE AN IMAGE. SURELY WHY SHOW AN IMAGE OF SOMETHING YOU ARE NOT DISCUSSING. STUP!D ISN’T IT?

  1. That is progress. The gadget is ideal even to us who stay in ZESCO electrified houses because of frequent load shedding in our compounds! Where can I find the same gadget here in Lusaka?

  2. I’m just suspicious here…What’s unique about a mere mobile phone solar charger and why is govt promoting this particular company; is this done in corporation with an NGO? Are these being assembled in Zambia? What is so unique about it…why do we promote foreign products that are being imported into the country with absolutely no value added? Why? Do they political elite have a cut in the deal? Chinese manufacturers make these things and have been selling them on Alibaba website for donkey years all you need is an adapter for your phone.

    • Furthermore whats government’s policy on renewable energy? What policies or tax relief incentives have they put in place to encourage companies to invest in it and to lightened the dependence on the national grid or even better feed into the national grid….in places like Germany domestic residents are the largest producers of solar energy feeding back into the national grid.
We have to change our mindset and embrace innovative ideas that have added value.

    • Very poor reporting indeed:

      1. showing a politician who didn’t even attend the launch.
      2. No idea of size of the charger – is it pocket size, like the common Power Banks around, or it is a fixed gadget?
3.No idea of the capacity – how much power can be stored, and hence, how long or how many phones can be charged, without recharging – or it is always connected to the phone?
      4. Most importnatly to peasants: cost?

  3. poor head line. i thought it was a GRZ initiative. Why didn’t you say ” World Panel Incorporation of USA” launches solar power in Zambia? I know that we blacks are just good a consuming things. with the abundant run,. we still wait for the white man to invent everything for us.
