Four children die on the spot in the road accident in Rufunsa

Share

Four children have died on the spot while 17 other people are battling for their lives at St. Luke’s Mpanshya Mission Hospital in Rufunsa District following two separate fatal accidents.

Both accidents involving two different Noah vehicles happened in Chimusanya area while the second one in Lukwipa area of Rufunsa District.

The identity of the four children aged between two and twelve years have been withheld until the next of kin are informed.

The two accidents have occured barely two days after one person died on the spot while 30 others were admitted at Chongwe District Hospital.

Both Rufunsa District Community Medical Officer Musanda Siyolwe and St. Luke’s Mpanshya Mission Hospital Administrator Valeria Kabaso confirmed the accident to ZANIS.

Dr Siyolwe explained that the first accident happened in Chimusanya area after a tyre burst where a two year old toddler died on the spot while 7 other people were rushed to the hospital for treatment.

She further explained that the second accident coincidentally happened in the same way where three children also died on the spot while 10 other people were taken to the hospital.

“I wish to confirm that we have recorded two separate road traffic accidents both involving Noah vehicles which have claimed four lives of children”, she said.

Dr. Siyolwe stated that all the accident victims have been treated and their conditions have been described as stable.

And St. Luke’s Mpanshya Mission Hospital Administrator Valeria Kabaso also confirmed receiving the accident victims at the Mission Hospital.

Sister Kabaso has since commended medical personnel for stabilising the victims.

She added that the total number of accident victims admitted at the hospital is 17 and are in a stable condition.

“So total number of admission currently is 17 with four people brought in dead. At the moment we have managed to stabilise the survivors,” she said.

On Thursday night, one person died on the spot while over 30 were admitted to Chongwe District Hospital after a Lusaka bound Rosa Mini Bus failed to negotiate a corner and hit into a mountain.

    • What is causing the tyre burst?? It’s not the Noah vehicle but the bad roads constructed with no Quality Assurance. Many Zambians have died on these roads because of selfish Leadership. They use cheap materials to get maximum benefits at the expense of poor Zambians. What a country. Very Sad. Minister of Transport, Works & Supply’s should be locked up.

    • Prince: What is sad is that even with the knowledge you have on the status and condition of the roads i.e. constructed with poor materials, you will drive like a maniac on the road. Have we just discovered that our roads are bad? Or has this been public knowledge for as long as you can remember? Why then do you drive like you are on the great Tswana highways?

Well, I did not mean YOU, but the Zambian motorist in general. STUP!D drivers on Zambian roads!

    • @sattish tembo, very well said sadly some drivers speed like maniacs even on gravel roads so it is also a case of drivers especially taxi drivers not driving properly. RATSA also are not doing a good job we as citizens demand statistics on which vehicles as a percentage of the total currently on the roads are involved in more accidents. It can’t just be a coincidence that so many Noahs, Spacios, hilux, landcruisers are being involved in so many accidents there might also be manufacturer faults with these vehicles, for goodness sake we have never had a vehicle recall from Toyota Zambia when thousands of other vehicles were being recalled in developed countries like th US and UK are you RATSA telling me that the cars which toyota Zambia sell to us are better than what is sold in the west?

  1. The report doesn’t say anything, about the quality of that road but does say something about the driver, having failed to negotiate a corner hence hitting into the mountain. So where does grz poor leadership comes in here? Don’t criticise for no reason. Read the report first and comment later, than vis-versa.

  2. Kapoma kabaso,l agree with u,nothing about tyre burst.Problem with nowadays is everyone wants to drive when some do not have experience, just check around,we r too excited about salaula vehicles which are not roadworthy,Jevic is another stupid thing!can GRZ barn importation of 2004 and below models and then reduce customs duty.

    • Did you notice that JEVIC penalties do not include compelling the importer to fix what may be wrong with the vehicle? It seems its another source of revenue for the government which needs redefinition.

I suggest that all vehicles coming into the country without Jevic be required to undergo a roadworthiness test at the border and fixed before registration. This is in addition to the penalty. I would have willingly paid for this service when I ordered my cluncker two moons ago!

  3. Very sad development indeed. There is the mention of Noah Buses. These vehicles are not very stable and should not be used as public service vehicles especially in bad roads like the Great East Road.

  4. When an accident like this has happened, it must be investigated. What caused it? How can we avoid it from happening again. Parliament should go to work. Either to improve the roads or ban those Noah vehicles if they are faulty. We are not afraid of dying in road accidents but senseless deaths should be avoided. MTSRIP and God protect us all.

  5. THATS SAD READING MORE ESPEACIALLY THAT IT HAS HAPPENED CLOSE TO PARLIAMENT THAT ” SATA” IS OPENNING NEXT SEPTEMBER, SO WHAT IS THE IMPLICATION

  6. Goverment should ban the sale of secondhand tyres, I suspect them to be the cause of the two tyre bursts. I was expecting to read that RATSA or the police have promised to investigate the source of the two accidents.

  7. Its not only the state of the roads or the tyres that are contributing to these accidents. Look at the vehicles that are being used for public transportation – Toyota Noahs…Why???? These vehicles are being used like Hiace mini buses and they are usually overloaded. those vehicles where not meant for that kind of use. This is happening on kasama – luwingu, Kitwe – Chingola road as well. This is not right. I think on this on RATSA is sleeping. What are they doing about it?????
