FIRST LADY Dr Christine Kaseba has urged the youths in Zambia to pursue education as it was key to the eradication of poverty.

Dr Kaseba said there was no alternative to education and hard work hence the need for the youths in the country to take learning seriously.

Sixty (60) Pupils aged between 14 to18 years from all the ten provinces of Zambia have successfully undergone the First Lady for a Day mentorship programme aimed at empowering rural children with career guidance and Life skills.

And the First lady of Zambia Dr. Christine Kaseba-Sata has urged pupils to make education their priority stating that the future of the country depends on a well educated population that can rise above the challenges and realize the dream of the nation.

Dr. Kaseba says that the boys and girls have been motivated to achieve their dreams through the mentorship programme as they have been exposed to the programming of international standard.

The First Lady urged the girls and boys to keep working hard in school in order to motivate others adding that there was no alternative to hard work.

The First lady said this shortly after conducting a mentorship session with 40 girls and 20 boys from all the provinces of Zambia, in Lusaka today.

Dr. Kaseba praised government through the Ministry of Education for ensuring that rural areas are given the same attention as urban area and appealed to government to deploy more teachers to rural areas citing a huge shortage in technological subject.

“The boys and girls you see here are junior achievers. But I am well aware that there are many boys and girls out there who have great potential which is not being exploited or allowed to prosper due to the many challenges being faced by pupils, schools, families and communities,” stated Dr. Kaseba.

Dr. Kaseba commended Junior Achievement Zambia and the sponsors of the programme, Stanbic Bank and other stakeholders for the continued financial and moral support.

At the same function Stanbic Bank handed over a K135, 825 cheque contribution towards the mentorship programme which is being implemented by the Junior Achievement Zambia in partnership with the first lady.

Stanbic Bank Managing Director Charles Mudiwa handed over the cheques and pledged to continue supporting the activities of Junior Achievement Zambia in mentoring young children in Zambia.

Mr. Mudiwa said that the bank has been a long-term partner of Junior Achievement in the first lady for a day mentorship programme that commenced in 2010 with a total investment of about K475, 000 so far.

He noted that the programme has since reached out to over 200 students from all the ten provinces of Zambia and urged the pupils and students to keep working hard in school if they are to succeed in Life.

Meanwhile Minister of education John Phiri said pupils have no excuse to fail to get into institutions of higher learning because government will next year will open Robert Makasa University and many other new university in various provinces to supplement public universities that include the University of Zambia, Copper belt , Mulungushi, Kwame Nkuruma, Mukuba and Chalimbana Universities that are open to them.

Dr. Phiri stated that Palabana, Paul Mushindo, King Lewanika, Luapula universities and other university colleges are currently under construction in order to give access to education to many young people who previously had no opportunity.

The Minister disclosed that at grade 7 level the country lose some 23,000 children who cannot access grade 8 due to lack of space while at grade 9, 174,000 leaner’s cannot access grade ten classes which he said government is trying to address by upgrading 22 basic schools into day secondary school in each of the ten province of Zambia.

Dr. Phiri encouraged the pupils to take advantage of government efforts to reform the education system in Zambia to work hard and make good academic progression.

    • Dr Kaseba and John Phiri,
Seriously, how do you expect students to achieve stupendous results when schools in Zambia teach you something else and the exams are out of syllabus?!
In most developed countries, what they teach in education institutions is what the exams will be based on, unlike in Zambia.
It is no wonder the illiterates are all over the streets as vendors because the education system denied them what they did study for and the exams have been based to confuse people in Zambia.
And you wonder why America, Australia,Britain, Canada, China to mention four, do great with majority of their citizens are educated! They get tested on what they have learnt in lectures, not Zambia.
What is the purpose of preparing a meal if you won’t even eat it at all?
      Please, change is…

    • I was telling my son to take education seriously. Then he answers me, Christiano Ronaldo is not educated. Then I told him, how many Christian Ronaldos do we have IN ZAMBIA?

    • Sata came out and actually greeted these kids. He might be recovering after all. Next step is to leave the confines of State house.

    • @st mary magdalena-but christiano ronaldo is educated.his education is in football.the problem we have is this one dimensional thought approach towards education.we think education is only math, english, social studies and science.we forget that physical education, sports, acting, music etc is also education.Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.Education is an admirable thing, but it is well to remember from time to time that nothing that is worth knowing can be taught.education leads to knowledge which leads to self awareness and remember the goal is always to be self aware. For if we know who we are, then it becomes possible to better place our natural gifts and talents in the society we live in.we then become masters of our skills.A master doesn’t work for anyone

    • @Zagaze, ulinshimbi!! Those are valid points of wisdom. And it is because a rational government accepted what you have said that they have introduced a two-way secondary education system. Academics & Vocational!! If HH (who rubbishes everything Sata says) wishes to ascend to power, would he throw this away? Naiwe chi Skeleton, quit being a fart exhaust & endeavour to be in line with the topic at hand.

    • Attention Please!
Photos never lie people and seriously, look, Dr Kaseba is the only one smiling. All the young boys and girls are very SAD.
I can see alot of pain in these youths who seems to have been coerced into be at State House.
Take a closer look at them all, the young ones are astonished, scared and worried because their families suffering back at home. It’s very regrettable to see my little brothers and sisters so sad and only Kaseba is smiling.
Where the smiles on these subjects faces eeh?

  1. Zwd and Zambia Reports are equal to ZAF(the air men during war) in their operation while Daily Nation is equal to Zambia Army in doing ground war while LT is BBC. These three org are doing a good job in fighting against terror(PF). Soon the Post will join the Daily Nation in doing ground operation assault against the enermy.thanks a lot for these men and women in uniform.PF must fall by any means necessary.two months is too much for a president to be absent.

  2. Ba kaseba if you can mentor the young ones you can as well energize the zambians by telling them where sata is… so madam kaseba where is sata.. did he greet those kids or went under the bed hiding so that they don’t see him

  3. YES Madam First Lady, Education is an effective woapon for fighting poverty. Educated people are also in a better position to understand national development challenges as well as voting qualitatively. Let us encourage educated people like you, First Lady, to join politics. We are not saying people with humble education should not hold political positions. Strategic positions should go to educated people just as is the case in civil service and parastatals where top positions are reserved for those with degrees (i.e. BoZ where PhD in Economics/Finance is a requirement) and heaps of work experience. Why is it that strategic political positions are given regardless of academic qualifications? Who says political decisions, whether at grassroots or higher level should be left to anyone?

  4. Education is key to understanding issues. You may have a President with a humble education as was the case with KK, FTJ and the incumbent but this is more so why you need educated people at Section, constituency, district, provincial and national levels. Kaponyas and thugs take advantage when the top leadership is poorly educated.

  5. ba Suntwe
mulekwatako insoni.u might known the importance of school becoz u are old enough and may be becoz of wat u av archived in life, but here they are talkin about mentoring the young generation for a great future, inspiring them so that they start aiming higher in their lives.
for sure that mentorship programme is for the boys and girls aged 14-18 and iam just wonderling how u reduced yoself to that level.

    • Some of these bloggers need mentoring because they can’t analyse even simple things. Mama Kaseba is doing impressive things for the vulnerable in our society. Spare her from your primitive and cheap politics please Suntwe.

    • OK now let me be straight with you. I would rather listen to Mubita Nawa than Christine Kaseba! It’s MY choice and opinion. I am not going to join you in singing praise and worship of the first lady. I have parents who brought me where i am and why should Christine be using the same tired ” education is the key” kind of crap! Anything new please???!!!!

  6. Is not the contradiction with the news on ZNBC country men and Women? Which news channel can i trust now giving me the correct information?

  7. Back in 2011 Zambians we’re lied to that PF is the key to poverty eradication.Shifting goalposts like Bush and his WMD lies?

  8. State house now is a play ground for pupils and kaponyas, during kk,state house was a respective area and the office of the presidency held such dignity and authority.she has nothing to do.

    • No No you are quite wrong! State House belongs to The People of Zambia. Go on the internet and Google White House Tours, and note a lot, of USA citizens visit the White House as part of their expression of patriotism. It’s the same with Buckingham Palace, and Westminster here in the UK. All of the Her Majesty The Queens’ palaces are open to the public for visits as are most country estates of important Aristocratic families! They usually charge a fee.

It is another way of raising funds to pay for the properties otherwise tax payers have to foot the bill. State House should look into, opening to the general public as a way of raising funds. In relation to the kids’ visits, this also happens in USA. Michele Obama even has a garden to teach children to grow and eat healthily!

  9. Why let kids be used as advertising boards via branded t-shirts and this is a bank…its just sickening…if you genuinely want to sponsor under 18 year olds surely is there need for product placing. All this is happening at State House…its out of order.
You are encouraging kids to go to school but unable to create proper jobs or stimulated growth of SMEs… to these empty tins (Kaseba included) casual work on an RDA project or in a KCM mine is job creation.

    • @ Jay Jay, concur. It is not acceptable. Those Stanbic Bank jumpers are shameful. I think there is pressure to use these methods by ‘investors.’ But hey we are getting development.

  10. Kasebanya has obviously been missing the limelight – look at the way she is entering pali tubana! Is this the kind of woman who would have allowed her stolen husband to delegate a photo opportunity with Barack and Michelle Obama to Charlotte and Guy Scotch Whiskey?

  11. ‘Skeleton’ Mr. Sata was on ZNBC TV News last night first showing him swearing in Mr. Malila and Ms Kaoma. It also showed him mingling withe the above students withDr Kaseba. It was heart-warming for me seeing him looking well.

I am sure the UPND are annoyed that he is well due to their itch for State House.

    • Affirmative, the merchant of death, tribalist taliban leader HH must be very annoyed with this wonderful news. He succeeded poisoning Andy and NOT with Micheal. He is knows how to play his political games. He would not succeed for Micheal is a unique person and come 2016, it is Micheal again who will be ushered into State House. How old will HH be in 2021. And for your information, Micheal has just rested and reserved Wynter Kabimba for 2021 because he would have been witched by the merchant of death, HH and many others. Sata knows how to play his politics. Wynter has not been fired. Sata is Wynter’s mentor and come 2021, Wynter will easily become president and rule Zambia for another 10 years up to 2031. Again, how old will be Hakainde??? Lelo, lelo!!! Wina azaalila!!!

    • Then why has he been mute for 3 months as a public property? The 3 months of Sata hiding from the people who elected him speaks volumetric than the still pictures. Why can’t he talk?
The “fit and healthy working at State House” is needed by all people of Zambia, whether ABZ, ADD,FDD, Heritage, MMD,PP,UPND, he is also their president and not only PF. For the last three months, Sata has been on still pictures and no one has ever heard him speak ever since as it can be agreed upon stagnant photos.
He failed to meet Obama, and has missed Mandela’s funeral, other vital presidential meetings, failed to address people about the deteriorated economy, skyrocketed costs of living in preference to primary school pupils. And yet claims to be fit.
Respect the rights of Zambian electorates,…

    • Though it is better to say “youth”, you can also say “youths” if you are refering to young people in general.

“Youths” is often used with a negative connotation to refer to young males in news articles. If you are attentive, you will see headlines like “3 Youths Found Guilty of Drug trafficking” or “5 Youths arrested..”

    • Look, education based on attaining papers is good and commendable. However it does not denote ‘actual life experience,’ which is superior to paper learning because it is based on learning by doing. FAMOUS PEOPLE WHO NEVER FINISHED HIGHER EDUCATION:

Bill Gates MicroSoft – (dropped out of university)
Richard Branson – VIRGIN entrepreneur (never finished uni)
Simon Cowell – Talent Scout, TV PRoducer (never finished higher education)

ALL THE ABOVE used their inner self motivation had VISION and were tenacious
To push their IDEAS into reality.
Once and for all Zambians; it is not paper education that validates a person.

President Sata and Winter Kabimba (hate him or love him): all exhibit vision and tenacity to get where they want to get to. Both Have life skills.

  12. This has become sickening, why has the president made it a game of chance for the people he leads to see him or hear him. Reading through some of the bloggers comments above it is clear that a veil of secrecy exists.
The president must do the people a favour, Come out on state house grounds, interact with the people and take a drive down independence avenue/ Cairo road for all to see that after all there is a real president not a hypnotized spook.

  13. Sata is actually alive and well he was greeting the girls in the pictures. This is amazing he will actually open parliament.

  14. So you know that education is the key to success, then make it free for all the people so we can be all successful not ukula bwatabwata fye. We want to see policies being implemented that favor free education for everyone in the country!

  15. Iwe where is your husband, stop prancing around like all is well. Even if you want to hung on to the position of first lady.Your husband’s health is more important.

  16. The president is a very important civil servant. If the chiefs are not so common and they dont meet there subjects anyhow what more fir the head of state.
MCS is trying to teach us something. i.e Hard work, less talk and unecessary meetings.

  17. Aaaaaww! Mwah, Mwah, big Kisses to our boys and girls. Don’t they look so smart even in their humble attire. God Bless them. Thank The Lord that we have a President that is now improving their educational prospects. Thank you Sir and Ma’am Kaseba.

God, it feels good to be Zambian! Thank you for appointing me to be African in particular Zambian. I haven’t felt this good in a loooooong while!

Things are looking better and soon September 19th our wonderful President will fully return to us. God Bless Him and Protect Him.

  18. I think First Lady should include some Zambian Kitenge in her wardrobe. I think our newly resuscitated textiles companies should be supported to the max by ALL Zambians. That Kaftan style looks marvellous on First Lady, but Kaftans are more North and West African. Betty Kaunda wore her Zambian wear fabulously!

  19. what needs to be corrected in the zambian education system is a scenario where qualifications are devoid of respective phenomenon to enhance applications capability, to extend own technological frontiers, resulting in a situation where the so called educated collect titles and resources, but leave nothing for younger generation to build upon.
