The Grand Coalition on the Campaign for a new people driven constitution has welcomed Justice Minister Edgar Lungu’s invitation for a meeting on the current constitution making process next week.

The invitation by Mr. Lungu, who is also Defence Minister and Patriotic Front (PF) Secretary General, follows the meeting he had with Attorney General Musa Mwenye on the constitution making processon Monday.

Coalition Chairperson Leonard Chiti told Qfm News in an interview that even though the coalition has not received official communication from the Minister of the invitation, it congratulates him for making such a bold step of meeting with members of the Grand Coalition.

Father Chiti stated that the coalition particularly commends Mr. Lungu for his decision because previous attempts by the Coalition to meet his predecessor on the issue of the constitution failed.

He said the Grand Coalition is further encouraged by the comments that Mr. Lungu has been making from the time he was appointed as Justice Minister.

Fr. Chiti has disclosed that in view of the invitation by the Justice Minister, as Chairperson of the Grand Coalition he has called for an emergency meeting of members of the coalition’s steering committee to be held today.

He said the idea is for the coalition to agree on what issues it will bring before the Minister during the meeting next week.

    • This is the PF I voted for, one that engages stake holders when needed, not an arrogant one.

I look forward to tangible results with timelines on individual milestones will need to be achieved.

    • I have always believed PF will deliver a people driven constitution and shame all the spineless opposition leaders who think that once there is a new constitution in place, then they will automatically become republican presidents.

warped thinking by some opposition leaders

    • @Gen you are like a reed in a fast flowing river. Where the current shifts thats where you go. In Wynter’s time, you were the type of Saulosi who kept saying we had a working constitution and that there were more urgent things to attend to. Now that Lungu is trying to open up dialogue, you are bending in the “Edgar” current direction. You, @Gen have no principles

  1. Wait people don’t be too execited by the exist of kabimba ,the issue of the release of the draft constitution is not a personal matter for the new justice minister Edgar Lungu to decide, its a cabinet issue and Lungu cannot do anything which sata and other cabinet ministers have not agreed collectively in the cabinet meetings, chaired by HEMCS. lets not put hope in this edgar man he has always been there in the cabinet meetings with kabimba and he spoke the same language with kabimba over the constitution. However I will be happy to see the constitution issue move forward and I will know that kabimba has been sacrificed or used as a pawn on this matter, because I strongly believe that kabimba would only implement what has been approved and accepted by HEMCS and the entire cabinet..

  2. Great Edger but make sure that before you make those haste movements make sure that your fellow PF members are in support of you. Try to find out why it has been a challenge to advance the enactment of a new constitution and the reasons they kept quiet about it. we don’t want you to be a victim of circumstances. Trust all those who believe in you but ought to be careful with them. Go on with the move but treat each move with care boy. Enjoy your new assignment.

  3. Edgar is actually the cream of the PF. Very focused, result oriented and, like Suntwe, can be highly reliable regardless of how much he drinks. Well done Edgar!

  4. new constitution means death warrant for Pf. Thats when kambwili and pf cadres will miss winter. winter wanted to save pf by denying zambians a 50+1 clause.

    • I disagree. It is the failure by PF to deliver the promised people driven constitution that will take them to the grave. Whatever you may think, these Zambians are no fools. Find out from KK, Chiluba and RB. Zambians exact revenge on a sure grand scale. For PF to have a chance of survival, they have to deliver on the constitution. And am afraid for the opposition that if PF delivers the people driven constitution, they will have a hard long hard road on the hope to State House. Truth!

  5. The Man who said,”Show me the animal constitution..and I will give you the people driven constitution..” is the man who holds the key to this constitution impasse. it has nothing to do with either Wynter or Edgar Lung;these are simply useful or useless tools in the hand of HEMCS. So Grandcoalition don’t be execited that you have achieved something because of a mere invitation for a meeting whose real agenda is not known, is nothing but another don’t kubeba thing. its Michael who holds the key,and since he is not seen in public we really don’t know who is in charge.

  6. PF are on record of reasoning based on stomach movements and speaking through their anuses- I mean ALL PF members, including those on death roll

  7. Releasing the draft constitution is one thing and enacting it is another. We have a long way to go. And 2016 is just around the corner. My guess is the new constitution will be enacted after 2016 polls. This is not Kabimba’s position. It is PF. And who can blame them. UNIP failed, MMD failed. Why do you want to rush PF. PF please take your time, consult and consult some more so we can have pipo drive constitution in 2020.

  8. WHY AM I NOT CONVINCED THAT ANYTHING FRUITFUL WILL ENSUE FROM THE MEETING?
IT IS BECAUSE THEY DON’T WANT A PEOPLE-DRIVEN CONSTITUTION BUT A CONSTITUTION TO SUIT THEIR ENDS.
    PROVE ME WRONG!!

  9. The problem here lies in the distorted belief by both the successive govts and the people of Zambia at large that the Constitution and its making process is a govt property owned by them. Thus only they can determine its direction and pace. So long as this view remains this country will never have a good Constitution that stands the test of time.

The process must be owned by the people and govt should just provide material support by virtue of their being the custodian of such material.

However the PF govt has an opportunity to redeem themselves here. To avoid embarrassment they can start afresh and make good on their promises while making it all look like it was Wynter Kabimba’s fault that things stalled. Obviously Lungu is simply acting on orders, hopefully good.

  10. I hope Tongas are not invited to this meeting because they can potentially spoil the constitutional road map. They are too violent in nature, therefore the security of the minister is certainly threatened. Only when they reform and renounce their violence can they be allowed to sit with civilized human beings. In fact they need to be quarantined in Southern Province where they will be able to butcher each other. Pass laws need to be formulated to ID all Tongas visiting other provinces to protect other civilized tribes. In other words, Tongas need to:
I will soon issue what is called a point plan to tame Tongas.
