Opposition Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) says the decision by the Electoral Commission of Zambia to electronically transmit the Kansenegwa and Vubwi by-election results is highly suspicious and that the opposition rejects it.

Speaking in an interview FDD spokesperson Antonio Mwanza said the opposition unanimously rejected the proposed pilot project because its effectiveness has not been proved yet hence can not be trusted.

“We find the decision by Electoral Commission of Zambia to use a pilot project of transmitting electoral results electronically highly suspicious, this is the reason why as opposition political parties participating here in Vubwi by-elections unanimously rejected the use of electronically transmitting system elections.

“We all know here including PF that they can not win the elections here in Vubwi and as Opposition political parties we will not allow ourselves to be fooled by a system that can not be trusted,” Mr. Mwanza said.

He noted that it was unreasonable for the electoral body to test a project on real elections as opposed to mock elections before implementing it on real elections.

‘Our position as opposition political parties,’ Mr. Mwanza added, ‘ is that if the ECZ want to test whether the system works or not is let them use it on a mock elections not on a real a election.

We have invested both resources and time to win this election as opposition political parties so will not allow them to use a system that we do not know, whose authenticity cannot be trusted, how do we know that somebody can not hack into the system?”

As opposition political parties we have rejected this use of electronically transmitting elections if they want to try the system let them test it on a mock election not real elections.”

He also accused the electoral body of lying to the public that all the participating parties agreed to use the pilot system when it was only the ruling PF who agreed to use it.

“The Election Liason Committee which comprises of all parties sat on monday at 08:30 to discuss the issue and all the opposition parties refused and a letter was written after the meeting and signed by all 4 opposition parties rejecting the measure.” He said.

The ECZ intends to transmit the Vubwi and Kansenegwa by-elections electronically a project which if successful will be used in the 2016 general elections.

  1. you bloody thieves you want to rig the elections the opposition are not of the idea why cant you drop it please be fair pf knows that they cant win hence conniving with ecz now bloody monkeys

    • Zambia with such mindset will never develop. We don’t need such. Actually, the old system is more prone to ridding then the new. Why are people so shallow?

    • There is a way to make this system work if the the opposition can demand the electronically sent results be compared with the manual ones signed off by all the stake holders before they are announced.

This is the rigging formula that put Mtarika’s brother into power. So the oppositon must devise a system to ensure that each of their representatives have verified copies of results copied onto their phones and sent via whatsup instantly. Best way is to have satelite phones and internet facilities in case PF switch of the network.

Otherwise only a revolution will remove this PF from power. If they continue to rig in this way, then I will start preparing for a revolution using high tech to hack into their rigging system and stop the rot.

But whats wrong with the current system?

    • In fact I will start hacking into ECZ system as early as 6 am so that by the time they start sending results I will be checking and blocking any attempts to alter the results. This is the beauty of technology. Nothing is full proof at all.

    • Another way around this is the results be sent electronically, followed by a phone call verifying the results in the presence of stake holders recording the phone conversation at the time of transmitting the results and copies of recorded tapes sealed and only to be opened at the talling centre.. If ECZ refuses to do this then the opposition should declare a dispute straight away. This way will ensure that results are verified in three ways.

Surely there is a way to stop this kind of rigging. In Malawi when the rigging was uncovered, they instead resorted to burn the ballot boxes to avoid a recount. In an event ballot boxes are burnt, the opposition should demand for a rerun of the elections.

    • Nimwebo mwaitemwa, te bonse iyoo. Some of us hate it. So nga mwali itemwa, Go ahead and love it ifwebambi twaliipata so we will go ahead hating it.

  3. Whichever case, we cannot put a trial version during such a serious time as this one. Whether RIGHT or WRONG, people will not believe the results 100% from whoever loses, (RULLING or OPOSITION)so I totally support the idea of using our old system of votes sending. If we want to make our people believe in what we are doing let’s do it in a manner they will understand period

  4. In the long run technology will pay dividends. The earlier technology is adopted the better for national development. It is cheap, fast, fair, fun to work with. ICT is here to stay. Support government. Give government a chance.

    • Here in the USA Al Gore was dribbled by Bush using Technology. Not against Technology but it needs to be transparent for it to be trustworthy. If you trust Sata and Mwaliteta, you are a fool.
