BARELY a day after the Daily Nation exposed the Post Newspaper that it had accumulated more than K8 million in unpaid taxes to the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA), the authority has summoned the Newspaper to a meeting on Friday to discuss an outstanding K24, 063.43 in unpaid taxes.

The Daily Nation on Tuesday broke the story that the Post Newspaper that had been claiming to be a clean and law abiding business had in fact stopped meeting its tax obligations soon after the Patriotic Front (PF) formed government in September 2011.

But on the date the story was published, the ZRA wrote a letter to the Daily Nation where it stated that the company was owing K24, 063.43 which was inclusive of penalties and interest.

The letter dated 9th September, 2014 and signed by ZRA Commissioner-of domestic taxes Priscilla Banda stated that the Daily Nation had not been consistent with submission of returns and payments.

Mrs Banda has since invited the Daily Nation for a meeting scheduled for tomorrow, Friday, 12th September, 2014 to discuss the settlement of the liabilities.

The meeting between ZRA and the Daily Nation is scheduled at 09:30 hours and this is the first time that the authority has written to the Daily Nation complaining that the newspaper was not consistent with submission of returns and payments.

“A review of our records indicates that you have not been consistent with submission of returns and payments. Consequently, there is about K24,063.43 outstanding in unpaid taxes inclusive of penalties and interest on your account. We are therefore inviting you for a meeting on Friday 12th September, 2014 at 09:30 hours to discuss the settlement of liabilities,” Mrs Banda said.

  1. Why not Mmembe who owes 1000 times more than Daily nation? Daily nation will clear their bill in a matter of days. What about the Mmembe’s past paper?

    • Now the whistle blower is being harassed. This is retaliation and it is a serious crime in civilized countries and civilized people understand why this should be a crime committed by ZRA. Uncivilized people will side with ZRA and say well, Daily Nation needs to pay. While that may be true, the timing is not rite for that. The issue at hand today is to deal with the post, explain why they have not paid since 2011, and what role the PF govt have played in all that. It is also strange that they are calling for a meeting. Could this be to offer them hash money??? What a country!!!

    • By the way Nubian witch Pric… will not understand all that I have written because although she lives in the USA, a civilized country, her mind is still uncivilized and she is a relative of Sata.

    • This is mischievous of ZRA. The K 24,000 is nothing but a regular tax liability for a small company the size of Daily Nation. They must focus their attention on the K 8,000,000 plus owed by the Post Newspapers. Someone at ZRA must be fired, arrested and then prosecuted for this! We can’t have such levels of incompetence at the tax office!

    • So ZRA having been caught with their pants down on Mmembe, their jerk reaction is to summon The Daily Nation! ZRA boss needs to be fired immediately. He is incompetent and compromised. Has ZRA just realized that The Daily Nation and Chanda Chimba III owe them some money? What a bunch of vengeful whining kids!

    • Who confirmed with ZRA about the Post owing? Komaki and Daily Nation arecompromised sources. The Institution that owes has been summoned already. You can’t make a judgement based on the media in Zambia because all media houses we have are compromised and baised.

    • @Brick layer

You are absolutely right. At least the Daily Nation has been remitting their tax payments, though not consistently just like the PF government is not consistent in paying the farmers and suppliers of goods.

Therefore by all standards Daily nation is far better than Mmembe and the whole PF government in honouring their bill payments.

  3. Simple message from ZRA. Shut up Daily Nation and the rest of you Zambians: you are small mortals and you ought to pay due taxes. Please don’t try to imitate the almighty potentate Fred et al. They are responsible for putting us into office and propping up the whole current national adminstration. Theirs is heaven on earth

  4. ZRA should be given powers to operate independently and regardless of companies that are politically connected they should collect revenue irrespective of that, this is retribution.daily nation 24000,post news 14 billion + interest + penalties =18 billion, then 8million.

  5. You fi ZRA, are you mad?? Why cant you also summon the Post?? I am very much annoyed. Why are you playing double standards??….. Behave guys, let Mumembe and his The Post pay the money he owes.

  6. Daily Nation must pay its tax obligations. I will continue to pay my tax obligations irrespective of how many evade or avoid taxes. I will pay because the men in uniform, our teachers, nurses, police, OP, GRZ workers and of course State House need run.

What Daily Nation should do is to ask for contributions if they are broke to meet their dues. And for the current good work they appear to be doing, I will be the first one to contribute K1 000 or even K5 000. But paying tax, Daily Nation, must pay!!

And I make no excuse for anyone not to collect from other deliquents like the Post.

  7. The daily nation will just tell zra that since your electronic system started, it has been a challenge to submit returns online. Else k24000 is half my pay.

  8. Can the Ho. Minister of Finance and his ZRA appointees explain why Revenue Appeals Tribunal was dissolved 14 months ago and never reconstituted?
To help interest of justice or to give free hand to ZRA to harass and intimidate selected taxpayers?

    • ZRA have tax accounts as well. Can a well meaning ZRA officer give us the status of their tax accounts? They may be the worst culprits from the look of things.

  9. Taxes have to be collected. Yeah, sorry media houses are being pick pocketed but they sort of deserve it for lying down with a ‘dog with dirty flees.’ They now have flees drianing their cash in order to break them before general elections. Next time if they survive this, they should work fearlessly without favour to the government. God says, “Human is fickle, But I Your God is true always.” Do your duty to the citizens of this country by unbiased reporting, favouring neither Gov’t nor Opposition. @Siamanengo concur.

  10. My explanation on the Msoni demand article has clearly been demonstrated right here. Prophecy in the 21st Century has become soooo cheap!!! It gets fulfilled too quickly. Ha!

  11. Strange, I thought the daily nation was clean for reporting on another media organization’s misdeeds. The post has survived many political battles, and I don’t see the daily nation being capable of fighting and sustaining themselves. Sad, I see meembe et al shutting them down.

  12. Selective tax system??? Basic principles of Public Finance. I recall those days when Masgrave and Masgrave was the most popular authority on the subject. I think I can retrieve a copy in my archives; it will be of great use at ZRA. I doubt if any of the ZRA Commissioners even know what I am taking about!
