Gender Deputy Minister Easter Banda today flagged off the Freedom Ride against Gender Based Violence from Chlilabombwe to Livingstone.

Speaking during the flag off Ms. Banda said government through her ministry is working tirelessly to set up a anti GBV Task Force team throughout the country so as to eradicate the scourge from society.

She said all the districts in the country will have offices were these task force teams will be operating from with a view to reducing and eventually curbing the vice.

Ms. Banda Said despite having comprehensive legal policies in place to stop GBV the cases have continued to be on a rise in the country hence the need for concerted efforts from all stakeholders so as to arrest the situation.

She noted that the country showed a lot of cases being reported in first quarter of 2014.

The Minister further urged the church, and traditional leaders to step up the efforts in the fight as they play key roles in societies.

The Gender Deputy Minister also said the freedom ride project was well calculated to send messages and raise awareness on maternal mortality.

And Chris Tett Managing Director of Bush tracks said the team of cyclists is ready to contribute to ending GBV in the nation through riding bicycles and spreading the word on how wrong the vice is.

Three of the riders are aged16 years old from Solwezi making them the youngest in the group. Others riding include Boxer Catherine Phiri, former World Champion and Olympic Medalist Samuel Matete and Claire Powell managing director of Thorn Tree Safaris.

  1. Great start … Samuel is a legend, I am glad he is part of the program on behalf of the smart people of the Zambian Enterprise.

    • For no reason at all, and with no Malice intended I thought Mr Matete had died!

Well I think the man ought to be used more than he is, kindred of K Bwalya.
I certainly think people like him would make a better Deputy Sports Minister and probably offer more than people who are elected and have little or no experience on sport at all.

I am 27 and I have read a lot about the man, for what he has done for your country, but he is being under used here.

      Thanks

  2. educate the girl child mostly they are the causers of most fights in homes,no respect towards the men.drinking is the order of the day

    • @Shaa; What do you expect when you meet a woman in a bar? Your statement is typical of a boys’ answer and excuse. Real men, those called gentlemen, know restraint and how to handle women without lifting a finger! I am not even surprised that your fellow boys are thumbing you up!

  3. Such a wrong concept. The problem is domestic violence not GBV. As long as abalangazi are being shielded by focusing on the so called GBV, the problem will only persist. Lets call it what it is DOMESTIC VIOLENCE and start from a home not the streets.

  4. Wrong concept, right tools. The problem is domestic violence not GBV. As long as Alangizi ideology is being shielded by the so called GBV, the problem will only persist. Lets call it what it is, DOMESTIC VIOLENCE and start from homes not the streets. This violence exist in homes not the streets.
