A group of villagers this morning stormed Chavuma District Commissioner’s Office to request the Zambia wildlife Authority (ZAWA) to quickly addresses the threat to the lives of people in Chisengo village and surrounding areas.

The villagers’ actions were prompted after a paddler narrowly escaped death when the hippo charged at him and damaged the canoe he was using to cross the Zambezi river. The victim dodged the hippo when it charged fiercely towards him before he swam to his safety.

Speaking on behalf of the affected villagers, Thomas Makai said the mammal had continued to pose as a threat to people and their crops in the area.Mr. Makai said pupils especially in examination classes and the sick seeking medical services from Chiyeke clinic were now be greatly affected as the only canoe that operated at Chisengo ferry point had been destroyed by the hippo.

He complained that the community has suffered for a long time urging ZAWA to attend to their request as soon as possible to avoid any loss of life.

And Chavuma District Administration Officer Kennedy Pezo said efforts are being made to alleviate the challenges people in Chisengo area are facing.Mr. Pezo assured the villagers that a request has been sent to relevant authorities to source a boat that would be placed at Chisengo ferry point.

  1. and Regina Chiluba is reported as trying to pump in 35m€ for a business venture here. while some of the zed citizens are suffering there. 🙁

    • where is the area MP? what has the MP done about this plight?

There is no place in Zambia that’s not represented no matter how remote.

Lets make these MPs work by representing people effectively

    • @Nubian, how can they build a school for 15 children of different ages? You should have suggested a dormitory at a school.

  2. Hippos are beings, and have a life.

You threaten hippos with a canoe, you go down, people that go or lose their lives on water should know those shores belong to those animals and should strain away

    No sympathy for me

    Thanks

    • Correct …….Why should one follow the jurisdiction of animals? It has to be a 2 way thing. When animals follow us were we live, we kill and when we follow them were they live they kill. SIMPLE!!

    • God provided meat to those people of Chisengo, but maybe they are vegetarians. Us in Luapula when a hippo show-up, then munani. Make a born-fire, Hippo will rush to come and put-off fire (he hates fire), and right there spears hooks, axes… ZAWA will just come partake in the feast.

  3. In Zambia we complain. In the developed world they research and seek solutions. This should explain why we are still living in the dark ages. I would like to understand a scenario that says: How can we live side by side with the wildlife in our area and still have the best interests of these animals at heart? The DC or ZAWA will NOT help in this regard.

    • At one time, the developed world was like us, they made the same things we are doing. but then they had free labor for longer than we have been independent from them. If we were to compare ourselves to them by the same unit of measure, we are far ahead of the 8th ball.

    • So @Sattish Tembo you are saying it is OK to go through the same mistakes? I know that your neighbor, Namibia is leapfrogging a lot of things because they are sidestepping certain steps that caused hardships for those that have gone before. That is the gist of my argument, in case you missed it… Oh, and @bryson you are a loser – just bring your argument to the table. Pathetic keyboard borrower.

    • Eish – I do not aspire to be anything like Kapoko, guys – it is Kalok, Kalok! NOT KAPOK. This is what losers like Bryson make you do.

  4. Mushota is guy and kalok is a villager abroad, 50 yrs of independence yet we still use wood carved canoes? Gov’t and local tycoons this is a simple problem get working . Leaving the animal alone be smart but a better boat.

  5. The problem is not the animal it us human beings.God has given us 5 sense how do you complain about an animal which does nothing apart from eating and going to the toilet and charging at any thing that provokes it.To start with the villagers should request for a bigger boat that will be ferring them to thier different distinies.Let our Government provide them with the much needed boat than croping the animals nature wont balance

  6. The dunderheads are commenting on Mushota instead of the story. This object called Mushota, another dunderhead is confusing you

  7. Ba DC a banana boat is not something you can trouble the govt. you use govt property like vehicle for personal use so sit down with business pipo, heads of department, MP and Quickly replace it
