Calls for incarcerated Mufumbwe Member of Parliament Stephen Masumba to relinquish his parliamentary seat have continued with National Restoration Party NAREP Youth General Secretary Bwalya Nondo calling on the former Deputy Minister to do the honorable thing by resigning as MP so as to give the people of Mufumbwe a new MP.

Speaking in an interview, Mr. Nondo observed that it was only fair for Mr. Masumba to give up his seat as he has not been representing the electorate in Mufumbwe since he was convicted earlier in the year.

Mr. Nondo said the former Deputy Minister should give up the seat and allow for a fresh start in the constituency so that people who are honorable than him can takeover.

He said Mr. Masumba’s continued clinging on to the seat even when he is not representing the people of Mufumbwe is selfish and that it is setting a bad precedence in the country’s politics.

He added that it is because of such incidences that his party and other stakeholders have been advocating for a new constitution which will give institutions the power to enforce the law accordingly.

He noted that the country can not afford to have people who are suppose to be law makers breaking the law themselves.

He also advised political parties to scrutinize young people they put in position of influence and ensure that only young people who will not disappoint and are of integrity as well as substance are put in those positions.

  1. Can someone educate me, Is it his decision to make or it is by law that when jailed for more than six months then you lose your job as a civil servant or MP?

    • It is by law. One of the MPs should bring it to the attention of the Speaker in Parliament, who will then declare the seat vacant. But in Zambia!!!

    • When people are calling for new Constitution you think its only for funny? The constitution doesn’t mention anything related to Masumba case. Masumba is on holiday, attending to personal matters. In fact he is better off than those MPs who are doing nothing but busy doing business/ corruption in Lusaka.

  2. Young people are young people there is nothing like picking such. This is what you have been fighting for.Equal representation with elders. Now what?Masumba jailed.Chachine inama yabaiche tainona.

  3. Why do we like making things difficult in Zambia? What does the law say about a convicted criminal holding public office? Is it up to this boy to relinquish the position or is it up to the law to give him the boot. I thought Sata was a man of action!!!

  4. Bt the man has appealed, why do u want him to resign b4 the supreme court cn make its rullin? Wat if the court finds him innocent r u goin to giv him back his seat? Comrades lets wait 4 the outcome of the courts judgement and noti ukulasabailafye

  5. But who is this Bwalya Nondo? I thought Bwalya Nondo is the current deputy ambassador in Turkey at the Zambian mission. The same Bwalya Nondo is former journalist who worked for ZIS now called ZANIS. Has he been recalled from Turkey and joined the opposition or Lusaka Times is using a wrong name for a different person? Need clarification here.

  6. double standards Government if this was an opposition MP he would have lost his seat in a heart beat, Why can’t this government show some balls and do the right thing, how is Masumba going to serve while in jail

  7. Leave Masumba alone. His case is stil against the court of law .Its up to the court to decide his fate or ar u also interested with the same sit.The boy is stil inocent until proved quilt by the court.

  8. Jojo the Bwalya Nondo in the story is a different one and not the deputy embassador to Turkey. The two just bear the same names and are not related. So this is a coincidence.
