Zambia has reached a stage in its history where it can no longer look to past for solutions and must look to the future for its socio-economic growth. According to veteran politician Vernon Mwaanga, Zambia’s emerging leaders should take up responsibility for nation-building through economic and social initiatives.

Speaking in Lusaka on Wednesday when he joined Stanbic Bank staff at a luncheon to mark the Golden Jubilee, Mwaanga said that Zambia should commemorate its 50th anniversary by looking to the future and identifying leadership that will move the country forward for the next fifty years.

He noted that leadership should not be restricted to the political scene but in business, enterprise and industry to ensure that coming generations of Zambians will benefit from the new leadership that takes up the mantle to move Zambia forward.

“Zambia is at that stage where we can look at the past to reflect on the successes and challenges we have endured as country. But what is more important is to now look to the future and encourage new leaders to take up the responsibility for growth of industry and nation-building,” he said.

And Stanbic Bank Zambia Chief Executive Charles Mudiwa said the Golden Jubilee was a major milestone in the history of the country because it demonstrated that Zambia remains a resilient country in the face of global challenges.

“To go through half a century and endure various political, social and economic challenges is a demonstration of Zambia’s resilience and its capacity to remain united in the face of a rapidly changing environment,” he said.

Mudiwa added that Zambia’s economic growth of the last few years has been down to the stable political and social environment. He said that investors remain attracted to the country’s strong pillars peace and harmony which encourage businesses and people to thrive.

Stanbic Bank hosted a luncheon for its staff at the bank’s head office where Mwaanga shared his long political journey as well as highlights of Zambia’s last fifty years. He was joined by the bank’s board chairperson Mary N’cube in commemorating Zambia’s Golden Jubilee with the bank’s management and staff.

  1. @LT, why you value VJ’s story and post in in front on left-side, while MMD President Nevers Sekwila’s story is on right together with Fifa rankings and Macky II musicians?
All Political Parties got respected and their Jubilee messages appeared on top headlines. Ours is even still there.

    • The celebration should be halted the biggest person and the person in charge of the country is not in?

Why are having a party when the landlord is not even here ? I will Congratulate zambia bit like most knowledgeable people I refuse to indulge myself in provocative celebration.

      Thanks

    • It is tantamount to treason to think that everything Zambia has achieved depends on one Man. Where is Kaunda, Mama Chikamoneka, Mama Kankasa, Grey Zulu and all the ‘freedom’ fighters. Grow up!!

    • LT is blocking the Skeleton Key because of standing for justice and truth. All good. Like I said before, Skeleton is non partisan but has every right to contribute to meaningful contents for the betterment of the country.
LT, accommodating PF cadres mostly spoils democracy. Media institutions in Zambia have been fighting for rights but here is LT blocking divergent views just because of not being a PF cadre is nothing but biasness.
I end with Newtonian laws of motion, “to every action, there is an opposite and equal reaction”. Guess some people on LT are more equal than others realize.
      Shocked!
      The Skeleton Key.
      206 bones.

    • @Nostradamus
You can clearly see what blogging addiction can do to a person. This gentleman called Nostradamus thinks he can dictate LT. He even boasts to be the blogger with the most posts. Half of what he blogs is lies, lies, lies about people he hardly knows. At least Saulosi, Ndobo, and Mushota make some sense. Often they abandon him when they sense some lies, cheap talk, and madness. LT has provided a forum for sound debates and not targeting and insulting people you don’t know. Since you are addicted to blogging, you’d be a better blogger if you begun to concentrate on matters at hand. But again you might just be a pathological liar with little reasoning.

    • @Nostradamus
Your blogging friends know you are a liar. You have not proved any of your sick claims about Field Ruwe. Now the moment of truth has come. You should produce and ask LT to publish the photos you have taken or will take of Field Ruwe. If LT won’t let you, publish them on any website and inform Saulosi, Ndobo, and all the readers where to find them. Don’t doctor the photos on his website without reading cyber laws and U.S. laws. You could ruin your life. PROVE YOU KNOW FIELD RUWE and not making up stories.

  2. Well said VJ. I like the speech. LT i have heard the the new draft constitution has been released. Where is the story ?

    • @Saulosi, don’t you have a DRAFT constitution? What people where demanding is “People Driven Constitution”, of which only those who are presidents can sign and witnessed by citizens.
      Ba Sata is away,

    • Yes but at least it has been released to parliament which is the second part of the process(or first). After parliament i think what will only remain is for it to be signed and endorsed by the president.

    • @What can HH say?VJ and the Standbic Bank staff were having fan, luncheon as they commemorated Jubilee. And I also like what VJ said:let’s look for the leadership to take us forward for the next 50yrs.Rupiah was a leader for the past 50yrs and can not be transported into the next move.Let also this move have it’s own Leaders.

  3. VJ says we shouldn’t look to the past. He’s right. We should not look to the past in terms of recycled leadership including himself!

  4. Words of Wisdom VJ. Now advise your friends in Current Government to let go of positions. So that Young Zambians can take the Country Forward. It is so shocking that even most Diplomatic positions are held by very Old people. You mean Young Zambians cannot hold these positions?
We should push for retirement Age in all government Positions, with strict 2 term limit.
    1- MP’s 2 terms only unless.
2- Presidents’ maximum age 55 years old at the time of being voted in to Power. This will mean that they can retire at 65?? No ruling President should be older than 65. If over, elections to be held within 6 months.
MESSAGE TO YOUNG ZAMBIANS: This jubilee celebration marks the start of all young and modern Zambians to take part in running the COUNTRY. Enough Poverty and lack of direction.

  5. V J should not be naive not to hurt his fellow old guards. VJ has just been honoured for his progressive political beliefs, therefore should endorse either Nevers Mumba, HH or Chipimo jr to be the next president of Zambia and not old leaders who have become so expensive to the nation both in resources renewing their health and progress in democracy.

  6. Thanx for your views ba VJ ! You are indeed a VETERAN POLITICIAN still active and kicking, ba LT keep it up. Ths boy was so vigorous whn he was a YOUTH….!!! We give due respect to him.

  7. This is overdue. Cameron is not even 50 but he is premier of one of the strongest economies on earth. Obama is just a little over 50 and is leader of the most powerful nation on earth. It is not rocket science; countries that have continued to look forward have registered reasonable progress through the trials and tribulations of taking on new ideas (some good some not so). Africa, on the other hand, still has a president who is heading to a century in age still running a country; closely followed by octos and septuas. Isn’t it small wonder a Medical Check Up requires evacuation???

    • @Kasusula. Spot on, This is why we should just cut them by introducing age limits & Terms to serve. African Leaders are a problem and want to die on the Position. See whats Happening SATA is on his death bed but still wants to cling on to Power?? Even Executives get excused on Medical Grounds. We will not move forward if we tolerate these Old Fox. They have short time to live so it will be the young Zambians to suffer. Let team up and kick them out. Enough.

  8. Very difficult to elect proper leaders when 90 % of the electorate are illiterate and who’s votes are bought with shake shake and chitenges.
Even monkey giving out free gifts can be voted presido.

  9. WELL SAID VJ. YOU WERE IN POLITICS AT INDEPENDENCE AND NOW ADVISING YUR PEERS TO LEAVE THE YOUTH TO RUN THE COUNTRY.

IF RB HAS NOT UNDERSTOOD WHAT VJ IS SAYING, “WE ARE NOT LOOKING TO THE PAST FOR SOLUTIONS BUT TO THE FUTURE, TO YOUNG LEADERS NOT OLD MEN.”.

THIS JUBILEE LETS FOR ONCE LISTENTO DORA SILIYA AND BOWMAN LUSAMBO THAT WE NEED NEW YOUNG BLOOD IN LEADERSHIP. THIS JUBILEE SHOULD BE A TURNING POINT NOT GOING BACKWARDS TO RB PLEASE.

  10. Mwaanga is one of Zambia’s biggest historical let-downs, after having held so much promise at a tender age as a future potential President or even AU Secretary-General he let that promise be sunk through scandal by way of one of the most odious crimes-drug dealing. However, even though now all his advice is taken with a pinch of salt, he is generally right that we need a new generation of leaders in all spheres of human endeavour!

  11. VJ as former Diplomat and First Director of Zambia State Intelligency Services will always what the people want to hear. The people he should be telling that are the political Dinaousors like Munkombwe,RB,MCS, and Guy Scott who still want to chew.
VJ is playing to the gallery and I am sure he has smelt some money somewhere or has already been hired as a consultant for HH, Kabimba, M’embe of Elias Chipimo.
The statement is meant to disqualify the likes of Miyanda , RB and most of us born in Northern Rhodesia.

  12. A failure to identify the cause of Zambia’s political dilemma is the real issue. What Zambia is suffering from is a UNIP style type of single party dominated sydrome. Though paying lip service to multi-party politics, the system seems to usually gravitate toward single party domination.

Following the demise of UNIP, MMD dominated the polical scene. UNIP ruled uninterrupted for 27 years while MMD stayed at the helm fo 20 years. What the country lack is a dual political system where contesting parties of comparable strength square-off every five years. That will usher in true political rivalry that will enhance the identification of potential leaders. We are still a long way-off!

  13. ” He noted that leadership should not be restricted to the political scene but in business, enterprise and industry ”

Right, because we need a businessman to run the government, so he can give the country away more efficiently.

How about leadership from the non-bought non-foreign funded civil society organisations?

  14. VJ is very right. African leadership, Zambia inclusive must now be oriented towards the younger, energetic and well educated individuals. The world body politik gives no apologies for mediocrity and kleptomaniacs anymore.
