Lusaka in critical water levels

Share

The water problem in Itezh-Tezhi district in Southern Province as people are forced to carry use drums for water storage

The National Water Supply and Sanitation Council (NWASCO) says Lusaka has reached critical water levels which has resulted in some commercial and domestic boreholes to dry up.
Inspections carried out by NWASCO this week revealed that Lusaka is experiencing very low water levels with some boreholes drying up which has affected supply in most areas. This unfortunate situation is as a result of most recharge areas in the city being built upon thereby affecting recharge points.
The shortage of water will temporarily resolve itself in the rainy season but there is need for Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company to find a permanent solution of using surface water as opposed to boreholes.
NWASCO has engaged Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company to ensure that another 65 kilometre water line from Kafue to Lusaka be laid and address the shortage of water especially in the dry season.
Government is taking a lead in negotiations to fund a new treatment plant in Kafue and another water line to come into Lusaka.NWASCO is therefore appealing to Lusaka residents to be water wise during this period.

  1. ZEMA has allowed Aquasavana to deplete Lusaka underground water 10 kilometres from Mumbwa/Lumumba roads traffic lights without an environmental impact assessment and not involving the local community. Aquasavana has been mining our underground water resource and this has an environment impact on the farming community and Lusaka residents generally. ZEMA and Department of Water, what a shame that boreholes are drying!

  2. Bob Marley once sang: “In the abundance of water, the fool is thirsty”. Kafue River is just in your backyard, yet water is still scarce. Lazy Lusakans.

    • Maloza,, did you voluntarily bleep out the word f00l or is it LT who don’t want us to be calling each other f00ls? I’m just curious that’s all.

  3. Yes Negros can can`t manage anything of value on their own, unless foreigners step in. Well what are you waiting for? Call the Chinese you lazy Negros. Eventually Negros will take themselves back to where they belong i.e. slavery. Foreigners will take over this continent one day and they will be no mention of independence because of lack of brain power and will enslave us. Why is the management of Lusaka Water getting those heft pay cheques if they can`t foresee that borehole water is not permanent. God has given you rivers and yet you can`t draw water. Such dander heads. Negros are like a mad man who shits on the floor whilst the toilet is next to him.Shit. by the way whose is complaining?. I haven`t seen any demos from docile Negros called Zambians. Die from Cholera in the name of peace

  4. So hard to comprehend. Why boreholes when 1/10 th of Zambia is water??We need reservoires and purification systems. That water and sewerage company is disfunctional and have no plans.GOD BLESS ZAMBIA.

  5. This is what the Catholics might call anathema or perhaps an abomination. 50 years, five regimes, copper mines nearly depleted and the residents of the capital city are photographed fetching water like villagers did in the 19th century. And we are nowhere near a desert. Hmm!
