The Zambia Police Service has apprehended 9 University of Zambia (UNZA) students in connection with last night’s riots that occurred at the university.

Police Public Relations Officer Charity Munganga Chanda said among them is the University of Zambia Student Union (UNZASU) publicity secretary.

In a statement availed to ZANIS in Lusaka today, Ms. Chanda said one of the suspects sustained injuries as he jumped off the moving vehicle while being taken to the police station.

Meanwhile, Police have launched investigations to establish the cause of the fire which engulfed a room at the university’s Soweto hostel.

Ms. Chanda said as a result of the fire, a female student sustained injuries after jumping out of the third floor through the window.

She said the student was however taken to the hospital.

Ms. Chanda disclosed that the remaining eight students who are currently in police custody will appear in court on Monday November 17, 2014.

  1. Being a student does not mean your attitude-by default is to be against state machinery and riot. These students spend more time complaining than learning.

It’s time they realised how lucky they are. If they do not like UNZA, let them graduate quickly, join the system and help change it from within. Not this cadre behaviour

  2. The wishes of over 80% Zambians with regards to UNZA must be respected before it is too late. The wish of majority Zambians is to ask the Government to close UNZA immediately, namailo litali, until February or even March 2015.The students at this institution are notorious criminals who are hiding under the banner of meal allowances. Most of students at UNZA are Satanists thirst of blood no wonder they resolve to violence each time they have a case with the government. And please this thing of paying students meal allowances should come to an end, they are not the only govt students in Zambia. The only deference is that they used leakages and corruption to find their way in. Let their parents or guidians pay for them. The govt should listen to the wishes of majority Zambian & close…

  3. You know most of these pipo you are saying should pay for themselves aren’t able to do so.no wonder people apply for these loans.people come from different backgrounds.others are orphans, others have single parents and others just can’t manage.a contract is made when these forms are signed and I’m sure I’m not the only one who sees the money being accounted for in the national budget.even though I do not agree with the riotous behaviour, the students should be paid

  4. IAM A PRODUCT OF BC.WHO EVER GOT 40 POINTS AND COULD NOT BE AWARDED A BURSALIES SHOULD NOT COMPLAIN.UNZA/CBU YOU CANNOT GO INTO YOUR 2nd YEAR IF YOU USED LEAKAGE TO BE ADDIMITED.LET PROMOTE THE INTELECTUALISM INSTEAD BY SUPPORTING THE CREAMS OF THE NATIONS.

MONEY SHOULD NEVER BUY DEGREES.DEGREES SHOULD BE LABOURED FOR.I AM NOT SUPPORTING THE VIOLENCE.THOSE CAUGHT SHOULD BE PUNISHED SEVERELY.

  5. We pay taxes so that our children can be educated at this institutions, but we expect them to be responsible enough and appreciate the money the country is paying to educate them. Grow up you students and release the privileges you have which others do not have.
when will this batch grow to be mature and take responsibility for their lives. A lot of us have passed through University and some times regret the happenings there.
Do not waste tax payers money please. Police and courts enforce discipline in these places.

  6. In most cases it turns out that those who get arrested are innocent students trying to flee the troubled campus but end up being caught in a police dragnet

  7. Even students abroad never received the expected amount in full.Should they also riot??? Students in Zambia are being used as political instruments by some parties, thats what I think and it has to stop. Let there be stiff punishment for the people with riotous behavior

  8. If the 9 are found guilty strip them of their bursaries and suspended them for 3 years. After the suspension period If they wish to continue with their studies let them reapply to go into first year and make sure they sign a contract that states that if they ever engage in such activities they will be expelled.

    • #8. Good idea Stella, I second you!! Actually we hear most of them just hide behind meal allowances as an excuse to riot. The real reason is, many who aren’t prepared to face exams are the ones behind this confusion with the hope of the institute being prematurely closed so that they can buy time to catch up once they are sent back to their respective homes. The system should decisively start disciplining these ungrateful chaps otherwise they will continue causing anarchy year in year out.

  11. Those students found wanting should be jailed for 20 years with hard labour, that will put an end to this nonsense. Why damage property either public or private. They are not worthy to be called university students. They think like 2 year olds.
