An Open Letter to Dr. Christine Mwelwa Kaseba

Share

Kuli ba Mama Kaseba:

Intanshi mutende!

Before I proceed any further, let me state out-rightly what this letter is not about. As a person who strongly believes in women’s rights, I must commend your decision to stand as presidential candidate within days of burying your spouse. Indeed, every woman must aspire to provide leadership to this great country. Your ambition therefore should be encouraged. I also should assure you that your decision to stand has somehow provided that needed courage for all women all over Zambia. Indeed, there is no minimum time required for mourning. There is no one-way of mourning our beloved ones. Usually, traditions have been used to shackle good women, especially after the death of their spouses. Your bravery to provide your candidacy for consideration, therefore, should be commended. I therefore do not condemn you for taking this courageous step. You have done well. I want to live in a Zambia where women will indeed have the liberty to make decisions based on what they feel is right. The time should come when women should stand against traditions that have the potential to subjugate. As a spouse, you have a say in the way you want to mourn or not mourn the departed. While it is true that it has only been a week since your spouse was put to rest, we should commend you for wanting to carry on the legacy that he left behind. And in your own way you have chosen to continue the legacy. And that Ba Mfumu is where I find the problem.

Kanabesa, the reign of your late husband was controversial for our country.

Your spouse presided over a nation that has emerged more tribal and more nepotistic than any other president that has ruled our country. In three years we have accumulated more kaloba in billions of dollars. If this were the legacy you want to carry on, I would ask you to re-examine your heart and think again. Zambians are not naïve; we have seen how that the Zambian diplomatic corps now comprise your relatives and those of your late husband.

Surprisingly, there are a number of diplomats whose only credential is that there were at one time very close personal friends of your spouse. I believe that part of the diplomatic corps should be scared now that you are aspiring to replace President Sata. But there is another cadre of diplomats that your candidacy will protect – your relatives and those of President Sata. If you say that this is the legacy you want to carry on, I should be the first one to state that please Ba Mfumu reexamine your decision.

From the civil service to the army, and parastatal organs, your relatives have greatly benefited from you being First Lady.

Ba Mfumu your actions while First Lady in looking out only for the interest of your family creates reasonable suspicion in my heart that you do not mean well for the future of our country.

Do not get me wrong. You do seem to be a great woman. You are educated. You do have a great experience as a medical doctor serving the needs of our poor at the University Teaching Hospital. But when we look at the government and see how many of your bululus are in office, it darkens our hearts and makes us wonder whether your reign will be any different from that of your late husband. As Laura Miti has rightly put it: “I just don’t want anyone from the Sata family. We need to dismantle the nepotistic edifice built in the state by the Sata presidency.”

When your husband was ill, we all saw that he had lost weight and that he was not alert at all. He was visibly sick, very sick. We meant well when we asked that your family consider withdrawing him from power so that he could concentrate on getting better. Who knows? May be he could have lived a little longer had he been away from the pressures of the State office. But our advice was met by repeated injury from yourself and those in his government.

Even when he was addressing parliament, as frail as he was, the images of your beaming smile has despoiled our memory. We knew there was something wrong. But your smile tried to cover it all.

You should not be blamed for the actions of your spouse, but it certainly creates questions in some of us to wonder what really was going on. As a spouse, were you complacent in keeping your husband going even when he had no capacity to provide leadership to our country? Now that you are aspiring to lead our country, it is in good conscience that we should ask these questions.

I am Ushi from Milenge, and as a people from the pedicle, we all know how widows become the first suspects after their spouses have died. That tradition is deplorable and we must condemn it. We should preside upon families to treat widows with all dignity and respect. As the Glorious Band sang in “Isambo Lya Mfwa”, it is unfair to heap the blame on the widows. That being the case, ba mfumu, we have a few questions that need answering considering that you are putting your name forward.

Obviously, we cannot insist on traditions now, when during illness our calls for humanity and Ubuntu were rebuffed. We cannot insist on a period of mourning now, when even at the time that Michael Chilufya Sata was visibly sick and incapacitated, all we saw was a cadre of people wanting to continue profiteering from the palms of a sick man.

I do not have confidence in your candidature. Your desire is to continue with the same legacy of corruption, nepotism and tribalism started by your spouse. You do not provide anything new and your time at State House as a spouse of President Sata inspires little confidence. You are a woman nevertheless and in a country that has been destroyed by men in power, it might be a source of relief to have a woman in power. But I really doubt if this woman should be you.

For now, I wish you well and hope that all goes well with you and yours. But please if you get elected to the presidency stop nepotism and tribalism and please help Zambia reduce on its appetite for “kaloba”.

Napwa Niine,

Munshya

    • The author has articulated the reasons why Kaseba and her family forest want to stand as president. There is very little to add except that Dr Kaseba does not qualify because her parents were born in Tanzania and only came to Zambia in late 60s after independence. Kaseba ‘s parents come from Mbeya in Tanzania.

    • Wanzelu,

A well researched historical events lol. Saulous has disappeared, have you noticed him anywhere else?

Things are coming out and I too foresee that your Hero of Humanity can scoop up the top floor.

    • Apart from been recently widowed, Iam yet to hear any plausible arguement of why she should not stand in a democracy…well so we claim. The arguements advanced so far have been bordered on hatred and sexism, nothing to do with the person and what she can bring to the gender deprived politics in Zambia.Infact its shocking that the so called ‘women rights’ establishments have sat on the side lines and watch people who have no credibility to assasinate the character of an innocent woman. Its her husband who passsed on,she returns the full exclusive rights on how long she should mourn her husband.let me put it clear: I do not believe in the existance of the ‘cartel’ this an imaginery mafia body, but like they say, when you consistently repeatt something false, people will eventually believe…

    • @wanzelu

She is more likely to come from Congo DRC. There’s another Kaseba who was mayor of Lubumbashi and was at one time Congolese ambassador to Lusaka. Like our Christine, he too is a Lala but from the Congo side, could be her brother.

    • Brilliant actor, this woman is! She could win an Oscar award in Hollywood. Look at her smile in the picture as he displays the sickness of her husband to the world and in the process allows her former husband to humiliate himself in Parliament.

The ambition to be president of Zambia is not at a spur of the moment, she waited for the opportunity, carefully planning, since she knew, as a medical doctor, that her husband had but short time to live as president. She is the only one who prepared for this; make no mistake about it. Shame!

    • @wantashi

I think you are on to something here. I have just googled Kaseba congo and it has shown me a place called Kaseba in congo.

Most likely, She is congolese and you absolutely right. Many congolese came to Zambia after the Mobuto took over Congo and named it Zaire.

I believe you my brother 110%

    • My fellow citizens let us all wake up and rise, Guy Scott is shifting gears every day to favour him over other people he doesn’t like Lungu, GBM, Given, Mulenga Sata. If he continues am afraid things will really get ugly. Scott, Fred,Wynter,Mwenye cant be bigger than Zambia. PF CC why not expel Guy Scott.? How much damage do you want him to cause.? Rememeber we only have one Zambia. I plead with you lets show Scott that we can only stretch as far.

    • Well articulated by Elias. All those who want to stand so that they continue Sata’s legacy should tell us exactly what that legacy is.
As far as we know, the legacy he’s leaving is that of corruption, nepotism, lying, ridicule, etc, you name it.
Is this the legacy they are promising to carry on. They had better examine that and ask themselves if that is what Zambians want.
More so Dr Kaseba herself who knew that her husband was terminally ill and consistently refused to admit it.

    • Iwe Haleisa Halelanda who Told you that it is the preserve of a widow how she mourns her spouce. You are wrong . The deceased still belongs to HIS family ie parents and they are the ones who decide how their child is mourned :: NOT the women he may have met in bars/clubs/ streets/ whaterver.
Get your facts right and stop propagating nonsense !!!

    • @chitumbuwa

Read the whole article to understand why? If you think the author is praising Kaseba, then better get your head examined.

To be frank the author has doubted the genuineness of Kaseba’s candidacy .

  1. Iam disapointed with the satas, they are too power hungry ,uncles, nephews, sons ,mums all want to takeover.finishing mornings first then aspire.

    • From the outset, I want to state unequivocally clearly that at least ordinary people’s dreams have been rightfully realised/fulfilled, in that, we wished Sata untold sufferings both during his controversial brief presidency and as well as in life after death, and our wishes were granted by super natural powers. Further, any person from Sata’s nuclear family or from his extended family should not be granted another opportunity to extend Sata’s corrupt legacy.

  2. Why haven’t you asked her How her FIT &WELL HUSBAND undergoing a ROUTINE MEDICAL CHECKUP ended up dying suddenly?? Has she embarked on SUING THE KING EDWARD VII Hospital for Medical MALPRACTICE/NEGLIGENCE?? Has She REPORTED THEM TO THE GENERAL MEDICAL COUNCIL OF the UK?? One would expect a learned medical Doctor to pursue these avenues if their spouse ended up with the misfortune of demising whilst undergoing a routine medical checkup!!

  3. Dear Munshya,

Thank you very much for your letter.

We shall look at your honest concerns raised in your letter and we shall try to clean her image in our media campaigns.

    Regards,

    Fre…..

  4. Chi wanzelu you are a lair. Where did you get that information that Christine’s parents are from Tanzania? From Sata now you are on Christine. Leave her a lone. You are such a bad and evil person.

    • I know you feel rattled when the truth is told as it is. It is well with me to accept all insults but what I say shall to come pass one day. Sata is gone, just wait for a few months, the truth about his parentage will be laid bare by his relatives. The same will happen to Kaseba.

The same way the truth was told about KK not being born in Zambia after 30 years of lies that he was in chinali,so it shall be in case of Sata and Kaseba.

Do your research, you will find out what I on about here.

  5. This idea of blogger always using one’s place of original is becoming boring in this modern society. Lets discuss how Zambia is going forward who actually is qualified and may be morally sound. Zambia does not have time to waste rather opportunity to forge ahead after the passing of our dear president

  6. When we told you the oldman was surrounded by fleas and ticks. …this is what we meant…one only has to look at the PF presidential candidacy list and relate it to the people who insisted that the deadwood patient who fit as a fiddle.
Nothing surprises us anymore…we are just shocked that there has been no commission of inquiry in why they let Sata carry on working when he was in no capacity to work.

  7. The author is being used. This man wrote a very good analysis of the constitutional issues surrounding standing for presidency.I liked him untill he wrote nonsense about Guy Scott. He also looks like a job seeker. People be careful, lets be prayerful as we analyse issues. Most of these guys just want our votes including those writing articles such as this one. They are job seekers.

  8. Iwe Chitumbuwa, it is simple. When Sata was sick Kaseba and some known ministers used to say Sata is fit and working normally, which was not true.
Now in the picture you can see Kaseba’s artificial smile portraying that all is well but see to the contrary Sata’s gaiety, stature and countenance, they speak volumes.

  9. Rubbish article. So you can prefer Dan Pule, Miyanda, Sinkamba, Sondashi and RB over Kaseba because of your stupid analysis. Then stand or vote for someone who you think will take Zambia forward. Find better things to do than criticising madam Kaseba.

  10. Miles – here i come the rightful owner to the boat my uncle built and according to our tradition, everything my uncle owned belongs to the nephew
Mulenga – yo kwena ba Miles, you went to university and all that education hasnt changed your backward way of thinking. if you want a boat, go and ask your father, i will inherit my father’s boat
Bob – abaice mwalitemwa ukusabaila. moneni, i am the rightful heir to this boat because my son married your sister Mulenga so how do you think all these children will be taken care of except from the proceeds from the boat?
Mama Kaseba – when my husband started making this boat, i was the one who was giving him medicines to help him cope with the backaches and the pain that comes with building the boat. this boat belongs to me and i am taking with…

  11. Out of the same month cometh praise and curse. Thats the writer. Any honest married man will agree that there are fewer areas of total agreement with a wife in word and deed. All that happens is tolerance. You may be shocked to discover that Dr Kaseba acts differently should she win. So please don’t judge her now. For me she’s the best out of the 9 PF ruffians and all the opposition candidates put together.

    • You point sir is negated that Mrs. Sata appointed a lot of her relatives to government positions and diplomatic service. She is just as much a tribalist as the former head of state, Mr. Sata

    • @James Gayo since when did Dr Kaseba become an appointing authority in government? For your information the diplomatic service has always been nepotistic. All past presidents have appointed relatives and friends in the diplomatic service each time there is change of government. You would probably do the same if you became president for your security and peace of mind from being undermined.

    • Iwe Paul so to you if most past presidents made diplomatic service haven for their kin- then its ok with you ??? Shame. What happened to the school of diplomacy VJ used to yap about??? This is exactly another reason why the SATA clan IS NO LONGER REQIURED in our governance structure. Vi imbwa

  12. She knew just like the rest of us knew Sata was a dead person who was being forced to work for some unexplained but definitely satanic motives, by those close to him, and especially her. The question we should be asking: is this the person we want to be at the helm of our republic?

  13. Very sweet and smooth to the soul. Made for a very nice morning read. Well done author. You politely make a very strong case. I agree with you 100%. We need more cool headed people like yourself.

  14. Ifyabupuba iwe chikaala, wen sum one dies he has died, they aint cmin bak,why shud u confine dr kaseba to mournin? She has a right to achieve her goals and maybe bein a president is one of her goals, why shud u b criticisin her for pursuin her dreams? Swine

    • @Chile1
Zambia is nice. Everything you’ve got in that mission can be earned, even in Zambia. Your desperation and fear is palpable through my computer screen.
Don’t despair. If you’re qualified and competent, your professionalism will be rewarded by the next kateka too, and you will continue to enjoy the perks of being in a foreign mission.
Ok ai? I hope I’ve made you feel better.

  15. Munshya you have spoken the truth. Who is the boss at UN (Zambia mission), Embassy/high commissioner London etc.? PS of Information? We do not want to have Bush family ruling, protecting their interests and friends interests. Is Scott looking at his interest? How can he turn around and say let the persons who have applied to stand for plot 1 decide/vote among themselves. So 6 people is better than 51 cabinet and MPs. Time to go to Mulungwishi Rock.
I don’t trust Scott any more.

  16. They murdered the guy and created a tribal country focused on Muchinga province and then they want to take over? I wish all could follow him for being so cruel!

  17. If you really want to paint a bad of Kaseba, you certainly can, but I can assure you, you can never take away the love that people hold for her and her late husband. Your must understand that anywhere in the world nepotism exists otherwise you would put people that can begin to plan your downfall. Mind you, engaging friends in high positions is also nepotism. Kaunda did it, Chiluba did it, Mwanawasa( even worse) did it, Rupia( children started to control the economy through oil deals) did it. The degree, of course, of nepotism is what might be examined.

I do not know if you, yourself, became a President would leave your village in Mansa, is it Matanda or Mabumba, without electricity and water or indeed schools and a good health centre. Nepotism is in all humans. Don’t be a hypocrite !

  18. well thought article please take heed!! Also note: the Black Widow’s parents settled in lusaka from serenje -whether they are from Tanzania. let her run zambians will decide especially from Mpika.

    • This is a phenomena! I swear, I’ve never seen such eagerness to participate in an election, as I have seen from abena Mpika.

  19. Ba Munshya
I salute you wholeheartedly. Hard core PF diehards will care less about the issues you have clearly raised.
Most of us who do not come from the Northern tribal groupings have mistakenly believed that all northern tribes, Ushis, Bisas, Mambwes are happy about the blatant nepotism and unprecedented and unbridled tribalism and nepotism that we have just experienced under PF where jobs and appointments went to brothers, sisters, brothers in marriage and in-laws. Yet there are so many other Zambians like you and I who are genuinely troubled. The worry though is that many Zambians just do not appear to have the wherewithal to raise the types of questions and make the types of observations you have made. I salute you.

  20. The long article is even irrelevant. The question to be asked is; Christine Kaseba to be considered as presidential candidate based on what. This issue requires only one sentence and not the long history. You are wasting space man

    • Lets try to answer that ;

1.0 Helped the husband mismanage the economy

2.0 Carried the files from office to the bedroom when he was incapacitated

      3.0 She is a widow

      4.0 Nepotism has to continue

Sorry looks like its silly season!

  21. SHE IS INDEED A HYPOCRITE. SHE IS NOT WORTH TALKING ABOUT. SHE SHOULD DISAPPEAR AS SHE WORKS ON HER MORALS AGAIN. WHAT A FAKE SMILE ON AN INNOCENT PRESIDENT. SHE IS WORSE THAN A VAMPIRE ITSELF. SHE IS CRAZY.

  22. ZAMBIA AND ITS PETTINESS. WORRY ABOUT YOURSELF AND NOT KASEBA. YOU DONT EVEN REALISE YOU ARE THE ONES PULLING YOUR COLLEAGUES DOWN. OWN UP.

    • You call electing a party president (potentially the president of the republic) petty?

Why sir, I have some topics for you to choose from. I’ll actually allow you to choose 2, because I realise the difficulty you will have, seeing as these immensely affect our collective well-being

      1. Is Kate Middleton prettier than her sister Pippa?
      2. When you cook ichifu, should you keep the lid on the pot, or not
      3. Do children like playing ichienga better than sansakuwa?
      4. Who is more handsome, Mugabe or Obama?
      5. Can a cat ever like a dog?

  23. Sata went into this presidency already a sick man. Anyone could see that the Sata of the Chiluba days and the Sata the president were two different beings. During that time Kaseba was in charge. She was ruling because her husband was incapacitated. So the kafwafwa people were seeing was all because of Kaseba. So this woman has already been seen in action and found wanting. Most of the appointments in government and diplomatic circles where directly from her influence. The Minister of Local government is her cousin, Yamba the ST is her in-law, Msiska the SC, Velepi Mtonga , Dr. Chikamata, PS Mwamba, PS Miti, the list can go on all nominated by her. No, this woman is not fit to lead the nation. She is a nepotist.
