Catherine Phiri stops Nonina to retain WBC silver belt

Share

Catherine Phiri has retained her WBC female silver bantamweight belt in a lopsided fight against Kukiwe Nonina of South Africa on Saturday night at the Government Complex in Lusaka.

Catherine beat Nonina via a second round TKO after the South African failed to come out for the third round.

“When you feel the punch as a boxer and you see you are getting more injured you stop the fight because I got the strong punches and couldn’t stand them,” Nonina said.

The champion was in total control in the two rounds pressing and showering her opponent with an endless barrage of hooks to the body before Nonina surrendered from the stool.

The defeat was a double blow for Nonina whose birthday also fell on fight night.

Catherine on the other hand described the fight as easy and an expected walkover.

“I knew this fight was going to be easy for me because she was talking too much. I knew she was training from the mouth and physically she was not training,” Catherine said.

Catherine is now ten fights without a defeat.

Meanwhile, it was the same story in Charles Manyuchi’s WBC International welterweight title fight against Colombian Delvis Casseres whom he stopped via a third round TKO.

  1. Catherine, its like you are becoming big headed, please watch your language. You need to be humble for you to succeed in your career. Your language was very bad against your opponent.

    • That girl Catherine kakali… Ati talked too much… leka nkutokole!! Those are not women to date, she can punch you ku maT.

    • ba Zidan, with all due respect before you ask the nice lady to be humble, first ask her to become a nun. Asking a boxer to be humble is like asking a slaughterhouse operator to be merciful. It goes against the grain.

    • Job well done catherine. You make your opponents seem very weak as if they are not boxers-like what would happen in a football match between nkana and real madrid

    • I totally agree, post match interview was embarassing. Trainers please let guide on how they should speak, just like Esther b4 her, she should b talkin tactics tellin us wat weaknesses she exploitd in her opponent n so forth….Surely interview guidance shouldnt take that long 2give n can evn b done durin lunch…

    • “When you feel the punch as a boxer and you see you are getting more injured you stop the fight because I got the strong punches and couldn’t stand them,” Nonina said.
Wow, I like Kukiwe Nonina’s honesty. I hope all politicians were like her.

  2. Cathy:

Congratulations my dear lady! You have done Zambia proud.

I expected your first real test to come from South Africa; however, you proved to be too hard-hitting for the ‘talkative’ opponent, who never ceased to talk even after the fight. Only this time she said the truth:
“When you feel the punch as a boxer and you see you are getting more injured you stop the fight because I got the strong punches and couldn’t stand them,” Nonina .

Allow no complacency in your camp, Cathy.
The next fight may be tough; nevertheless, with the dedication to sport that I know of you, the discipline displayed in training, and the books in your school bag (sport and school), you will make it through to the top.

Thank you Zambians for supporting our Cathy.

    God bless you all.

  3. Charles:

    Congratulations gentleman.
Continue on the guard perfection and comic reduction. Stay focused all the time.

You may get a tougher fighter next time; we don’t want to leave anything to chance.

    God bless you.

  4. Congrats Cathrine!

More money in your pockets. You probably have more money than Mushota who thinks that life is all about academics.

When will people learn that we are gifted differently and there is no gift/talent that is more superior or inferior than the other.

Does Mushota know that the richest man in the world, Bill Gates, didn’t finish his degree at MIT?

Life is larger than academics Mushota. I am personally an academic – pursuing an MSc Ecological Economics at the University of Edinburgh. But i respect other people’s professions.

Just a thought Mushota, nothing personal. I’ll actually be so glad to meet you in Scotland, am on Lauriston Street, close to the famous Pubic Triangle in Edinburgh. Can we link up please?

    • Do i detect a crush for Mushota? Mushota is a man, careful what you wish for! Mushota is a man, obese, with a micro pen!s and allitosis! Good luck in your meeting with Mushota!

  5. I dont get it, why are people disliking the comments of congratulations?, it means all these blogers are south Africans or what?. Congrats Cathy, i will i was able to watch.

    • Chief analyser:

This reaction has also left me wondering what culture we are cultivating in this nation, or is it on LT—criticize everything, especially that which seems good.

Even if it is jealousy, the young lady was not only fighting for herself, but for the whole nation.

Had she lost the fight, I reckoned we all would have felt embarrassed; it now seems some would have celebrated.
If Nonina herself could complement Cathy for being a tough fighter, why would anybody else choose not only not to congratulate her, but also to hate those who do so?
I think it is some kind of a disease! Psychologists, we need your help here.

Saying thank you doesn’t cost anything, but its rewards are immense.

Thanks for your sharp observation Chief analyser.

  6. When this woman get brain damage from all the punches to her, will you still congratulate her? Boxing is not a game, it is brutality and barbaric.

    • Nubian my dear, if ba Catherine stops beating up people in the ring, are you going to put food on her table? Let her do what she does best. Beat the sh!t out of anyone who stands in front of her in the ring. That’s her thing. Some people work for for 30 years or more in the mines and die at 60 from black lung disease. As the french say, sh!t happens.

  7. The two openents against Manyuchi and Catherine appeared like they had been paid to lose. Thses are the most disappointing contests. Oriental Promotoions should be bringing American boxers

  8. That was easy and great my girl ,

keep it up, thats the reward of hard work. It was not easy for Kambwili, with these boos from the people and also the song of the people, Lets go Lungu, lets go.How was it Kambwili?

  9. And u call that boxin? Cm on zambians wake up,thiz fights r jus staged, those ate not real boxers, this is jus actin, sumthin lyk wwe wrestlin

  10. Away from politics, congratulations Catherine girl! Don’t let any victory to get into your head. The secret to sustained success is to continue your hard work, both in the ring and in the classroom.

  11. By the way keep out of the dirty politics of PF. Your supporters are Zambians not PF , UPND, MMD, ADD, NAREP or Green Party. You were fighting for Zambia and not for Sata, or even Confucius Scott, lol!

  12. Congrats Catherine! We have now reached a level where our boxers are unleashing nuclear power packed punches (NPPP)

  13. Congratulations to Catherine and Charles on your victories. But having watched the tournament at the New Government Complex, I seriously thought that we boxing fans were short-changed. I mean having to pay K300 and K100 for the boxing we saw last night appears like fraud. In short the opponents for Charles and Catherine respectively appeared just too weak. The earlier supporting bouts were even more entertaining than the last two. Next time OQBP organizes another tournament, they need to find better boxers, not the pretenders we saw last night.
